Coach Casey Alexander and his Lipscomb team capped their season with an 81-66 loss to Texas in Thursday’s NIT championship game in New York. Naturally, the questions about Alexander’s future have already begun. He’s an obvious candidate for the open Belmont job after spending 20 total seasons with the Bruins – four as a player and 16 as a coach. But Alexander has been noncommittal in his public statements about the coaching vacancy so far. “Obviously there’s a lot of people talking about that,” he said at Lipscomb’s welcome home ceremony Friday afternoon. “I’m glad I’m the Lipscomb coach. We’ll deal with that when it happens, if it happens.” Alexander’s mentor and longtime Belmont head coach Rick Byrd announced his retirement Monday morning after 33 years on the Bruin sidelines. Alexander has routinely credited Byrd for impacting his life both on and off the court. “Belmont is important to me,” Alexander told 104.5 The Zone’s 3HL show Wednesday. “I spent 20 years there, I graduated from there, my wife graduated from there. I’ve got a history of 20 teams of players that were important to me. Hardly anybody’s more important to me than Coach Byrd is.” Before entering the coaching ranks, Alexander was a star player in his own right. He was a three-sport standout at Brentwood Academy and won two state championships. He later starred for Belmont’s basketball team (1992-95) and is among the school’s all-time leaders in assists and steals. Alexander was inducted into the Belmont Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. It’s a little like High School Musical. Thursday night, Lipscomb men’s basketball takes on Texas in the NIT championship at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York City. But back on campus in Nashville, students are also gearing up for opening night of Singarama, a song-and-dance competition that’s been going on for decades. A large chunk of Lipscomb students participate in Singarama, especially those in Greek Life. And while some students are taking advantage of the bus Lipscomb sponsored to MSG, students who are in Singarama are preparing for opening night of the anticipated show. Luke Shoulders (second from left in featured photo) is possibly one of Lipscomb basketball’s biggest fans. He’s been dedicated to dressing out and cheering on the Bisons all season. But he’s also heavily involved in Singarama and has a main role in this year’s show, playing “Dad (Jim Foster)” in the “Wonder Years” show, so he won’t be making the biggest trip of the season to watch Lipscomb play in the championship. “I love the Lipscomb student experience,” Shoulders said. “I believe in joy and excitement in abundance where people are gathered. Both basketball and Singarama give me that experience. I get the excitement of cheering on a sport that I’ve grown to love in basketball, and I get to perform with people I love in Singarama. Basketball and Singarama are two of the most significant experiences that I will remember in college for the rest of my life.” Singarama opens on Thursday night and has a show on Friday evening and two shows on Saturday. One year after winning its first ASUN title, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team has earned a chance to defend its crown. The Bisons (25-6) dominated NJIT in a 78-55 ASUN semifinal victory on Thursday in Allen Arena. That sets up a rubber match with Liberty (27-6) on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT for the ASUN tournament title and a spot in the Big Dance. The game will be televised by ESPN – Lipscomb’s first-ever national television appearance at home. The Lipscomb men’s basketball team continued to steamroll through the ASUN as the Bisons grabbed an 86-57 win over the Kennesaw State Owls in Allen Arena Monday night. The Owls (3-17, 0-5 ASUN) kept things a bit too close for comfort for Lipscomb at first, but the Bisons (14-4, 5-0 ASUN) broke away in the second half to stay perfect in conference play. “[You’ve] gotta be prepared for everything,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “And I felt like our guys handled the game where we never really played with great rhythm but still [won] by 29.” Read Spencer Boehme’s full recap here.
