Friday night, roadside rivals Lipscomb University and Belmont University kicked off their seasons in a “Battle of the Boulevard” match-up. The 17th meeting between the teams ended with the Bisons hoisting the Red Bull Trophy yet again after posting a 3-1 victory over the Bruins. The Bisons, in their white and purple striped uniforms, took the field around 6 p.m. to warm up. Ten minutes later, the Bruins, dressed in red, took the opposite end of the field in an attempt to win back the coveted title of ‘Battle’ Champions. From the beginning of the match, Belmont started off aggressive and pushed deep into Lipscomb’s defense multiple times. For the rest of the game, the Bisons’ defense was not so generous. Lipscomb held their own against a good opponent, taking 11 shots on goal and making 3, while the Bison defense allowed 7 shots on goal. Only one found itself in the back of Lipscomb’s net. The first Bison goal arrived when Josue Chavez, the sophomore midfielder from Colorado, took an open shot from 25 yards away to get the ball rolling on Lipscomb’s eventual win. If there wasn’t any other indication that these two teams are rivals, the seven cards — six yellow and one red — certainly said enough. From the 38th minute on, Belmont played a man down after Cody Stratton was ejected for a slide from behind. Of the other cards, Belmont and Lipscomb each had three cautions. College Colors Day, a celebration of school spirit, will take place on Friday, August 30th, and universities across the nation, including Lipscomb, will be wearing their school colors to show their school pride. Many universities across the nation have participated in years past, but this year, the Lipscomb Alumni Association, Lipscomb Athletics and Lipscomb Dining services are partnering with the event to help students here at Lipscomb show school pride. Students are encouraged to wear a lot of purple and gold on and keep track of their school spirit on social media. Tag your photos during the day on the Lipscomb University Facebook page, or tag them on Twitter with handle, @Lipscomb. The Lipscomb bookstore is offering a 30% discount to anyone who wants to get some new Lipscomb attire to celebrate the day. You can download the coupon at www.lipscomb.edu. The year’s first Battle of the Boulevard is Friday night when the men’s soccer team takes on Belmont at 7 p.m. They’re offering free t-shirts and barbecue at the event. You can also decorate your own brick in Bison square to show your Bison spirit from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday. Free snow cones, cotton candy and other snack items will also be available at that time in Bison Square for anyone who wears their Lipscomb colors. The Department of Athletics is putting on t-shirt trade day during the event to make sure the campus is covered in purple. After an off-season full of change, including the hiring of Casey Alexander as the new head coach, the upcoming 2013-14 Lipscomb men’s basketball team officially has its first schedule of the Alexander era, with tilts against conference foes and local competition filling out the slate. Following an exhibition match against Freed-Hardeman on Halloween night, Lipscomb opens the season against arch-rival Belmont in the first Battle of the Boulevard at Allen Arena on Nov. 8. The second round will take place down the street on Nov. 20 at Belmont’s Curb Event Center. The Bisons will take the court against two other Nashville squads in November as well. The Nov. 15 game against Vanderbilt will be the first between the opponents since 2009, and the Nov. 18 matchup with Tennessee State will be the first meeting of the Bisons and Tigers in over a decade. Lipscomb’s first out-of state trip will lead to the program’s first game against perennial heavyweight Georgetown in Washington, D.C. over the Thanksgiving weekend. “That will be an exciting time for our guys to go to the nation’s capital and play a premier program,” Alexander told Lipscomb Athletics. “It will be a dream come true for J.J. Butler to go back home and play in front of his family. There are a lot of really exciting parts to that game to look forward to. Despite a strong start, the Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team couldn’t claim the season’s second ‘Battle of the Boulevard’ title, losing a 100-66 contest with the Belmont Bruins at the Curb Event Center. Belmont had the series’ first win in November at Allen Arena in the Bisons’ season opener. Lipscomb kept early momentum away from the Bruins, who suffered from poor shooting early on. Once Belmont began to hit crucial shots, the Bruins caught the lead and began to build on it. The Bisons kept the margin at a manageable distance until the middle of the second half. Junior Khion Sankey put up 15 for the Bisons, with sophomore Martin Smith not too far behind with 13. Freshman Stephen Hurt had 11, and all three Bisons had five rebounds a piece for the game. Sankey said he feels that tonight’s missteps must be improved upon for this weekend’s match-up against UT Martin. “We’ve just got to play aggressive,” Sankey said. “We’ve got to come out strong. We’ve got to play for 40 minutes.” Looking ahead, the Bisons return to Allen Arena on Saturday to play the 3-5 UT Martin Skyhawks, following that up with a trip up to Lexington, Ky., to take on the now-unranked 5-3 Kentucky Wildcats on Dec. 15. After losing a close battle with Murray State Monday night, the men’s basketball team played hard against a, at the time, 3-2 Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, winning 80-64. The Bisons came out strong with a 4-0 run in the first three minutes, but the Golden Eagles kept the game close until Lipscomb gained important momentum, going into the half up by nine. The second half mirrored the first, with a strong finish helping the Bisons close things out. The team evened out their record to 3-3 on the season. Senior Deonte Alexander led the Bisons in scoring with 17, with sophomore Martin Smith adding in 14. Freshmen Stephen Hurt led in rebounds with 10 and junior Khion Sankey led in assists with four. The Bisons also made 80% of their free throws, with sophomore Malcom Smith making seven of eight. Martin Smith believes that tonight’s win helped show the team’s strengths. “It was a big win for us,” Martin Smith said. “This is a team that’s going to compete in the OVC with Murray State and Belmont.
