The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has officially released their 2013-2014 schedule, which includes a December trip up to Knoxville to take on the Lady Volunteers. Nine of the teams in Lipscomb’s schedule are post season teams from last year. “We have set up a challenging schedule for our team,” Brown told Lipscomb Athletics. “It will give us some experiences in great environments while preparing us for the Atlantic Sun season.” To start the year, Lipscomb’s Women’s basketball team is scheduled to play in two exhibition games against Freed-Hardeman (Oct. 28) and Fisk (Nov. 6). The Lady Bisons jump into the regular season against Morehead State on Nov. 10. This year’s installment of the Battle of the Boulevard is set for Nov. 14 at Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons will look to avenge their 70-54 home loss to Belmont from last year. The Lady Bisons are also set to play three SEC powerhouses this seasons. They play Kentucky in Lexington on Nov. 21. Less than a month later, the team returns to Athens, Ga., to take on the Lady Bulldogs again this year on Dec. 17. Lipscomb then travels to Rocky Top to face Tennessee, a team that the Lady Bisons have never played, on Dec. 29. “It is always great to play the Kentucky’s and the Tennessee’s. They are great models of excellence and where we are working to get to,” Brown said. The team start their conference play in Johnson City, Tenn., against ETSU on Jan. 2. College Colors Day, a celebration of school spirit, will take place on Friday, August 30th, and universities across the nation, including Lipscomb, will be wearing their school colors to show their school pride. Many universities across the nation have participated in years past, but this year, the Lipscomb Alumni Association, Lipscomb Athletics and Lipscomb Dining services are partnering with the event to help students here at Lipscomb show school pride. Students are encouraged to wear a lot of purple and gold on and keep track of their school spirit on social media. Tag your photos during the day on the Lipscomb University Facebook page, or tag them on Twitter with handle, @Lipscomb. The Lipscomb bookstore is offering a 30% discount to anyone who wants to get some new Lipscomb attire to celebrate the day. You can download the coupon at www.lipscomb.edu. The year’s first Battle of the Boulevard is Friday night when the men’s soccer team takes on Belmont at 7 p.m. They’re offering free t-shirts and barbecue at the event. You can also decorate your own brick in Bison square to show your Bison spirit from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday. Free snow cones, cotton candy and other snack items will also be available at that time in Bison Square for anyone who wears their Lipscomb colors. The Department of Athletics is putting on t-shirt trade day during the event to make sure the campus is covered in purple. After an off-season full of change, including the hiring of Casey Alexander as the new head coach, the upcoming 2013-14 Lipscomb men’s basketball team officially has its first schedule of the Alexander era, with tilts against conference foes and local competition filling out the slate. Following an exhibition match against Freed-Hardeman on Halloween night, Lipscomb opens the season against arch-rival Belmont in the first Battle of the Boulevard at Allen Arena on Nov. 8. The second round will take place down the street on Nov. 20 at Belmont’s Curb Event Center. The Bisons will take the court against two other Nashville squads in November as well. The Nov. 15 game against Vanderbilt will be the first between the opponents since 2009, and the Nov. 18 matchup with Tennessee State will be the first meeting of the Bisons and Tigers in over a decade. Lipscomb’s first out-of state trip will lead to the program’s first game against perennial heavyweight Georgetown in Washington, D.C. over the Thanksgiving weekend. “That will be an exciting time for our guys to go to the nation’s capital and play a premier program,” Alexander told Lipscomb Athletics. “It will be a dream come true for J.J. Butler to go back home and play in front of his family. There are a lot of really exciting parts to that game to look forward to. Law school, professional basketball — or more likely both — are the career choices facing senior basketball player Hannah Phillips. Phillips, enjoying her fourth year as a Lady Bison, continues to make her mark on the hardwood. She scored her 1,000th career point a couple of weeks ago — making her just the fifth player in Lady Bison history to reach that milestone — and she’s got weeks to add onto that total before hanging it up. Phillips downplays her own achievement to point to another Lady Bison who reached the 1,000-point mark: Beth Stark, who was also Phillips’ AAU coach. “She scored around 3,000-something points,” Phillips said. “Now, that’s an achievement.” Phillips said she’s thrilled with reaching such a milestone, but it was not a goal she had ever set for herself. “The ballplayer I am now, and what I was freshman year, are two different players,” she said. “I loved defense, and my dad always coached me that my defense would create offense.” Phillips began playing basketball when she was 5 in YMCA rec leagues. “My family still has the game film from when I was 5. It’s pretty hilarious,” she said. That 5-year-old continued to hone her skills for years until she was recruited by Lipscomb. Phillips was looking at Division II, Division III and Ivy League schools, but they did not offer full rides. “When a DI full ride scholarship was offered, I took it,” she said. “[The scholarship] turned out to be a blessing because my family has been at every game.” “I really flourished as a player in this environment,” Phillips said. Sports bring people together- whether playing, watching or practicing, athletics create a community as well as passion and enthusiasm. While Division I athletics bring a lot of this to Lipscomb, it’s not the only way to get involved in sports on campus. Intramural sports provide a wonderful opportunity to get involved, meet people and share that passion for sports you may have in your heart. Offering around seventeen different sports, students are bound to find at least one intramural they are interested with. While some sports show more favor than overs, the wide variety of activities offered are to call for the constant growth in intramural involvement. Considering surrounding universities and their intramurals, Lipscomb offers one of the larger assortments of sports. Trevecca has 10 intramurals they offer to their students, Vanderbilt has around 12 and Belmont’s intramural website could not offer any information on their sports. It’s plain to see by watching the games that students become passionate about the sport they are playing. A break from school work can put anyone in a good mood.
