Sigma Alpha Iota, a national music fraternity, provides Lipscomb women with opportunities to serve others through music and form friendships outside of Lipscomb. SAI members are active in Lipscomb’s music department — many are involved in the University Wind Ensemble and A Cappella Singers. Although SAI is a music organization, members are not required to be music majors or minors. Majors in Lipscomb’s chapter range from elementary education to chemistry to pre-law. SAI is smaller than most Greek organizations on campus, with only nine collegiate members, but the chapter is growing, having more than doubled its membership in the past three years. This semester’s member-in-training class alone will increase the chapter’s size by more than fifty percent. The small chapter size is augmented by SAI’s status as a national organization. Lipscomb’s chapter frequently collaborates with chapters from other colleges in the Middle Tennessee area such as Vanderbilt, Belmont and MTSU. This experience of sisterhood outside the Lipscomb campus provides SAI members with a unique experience not offered by campus social clubs. Lipscomb’s chapter, Zeta Omicron, was established in 1974 and celebrated its fortieth anniversary last fall. SAI meets once a week to plan service projects, performances and formals. The club holds a musicale at least once each semester in which members demonstrate their musical talents. Different fundraisers held throughout the year benefit music-oriented philanthropies supported by SAI. The philanthropies are dedicated to meeting various musical needs such as providing musical instruments to children in developing countries and providing Braille and large print sheet music to visually impaired musicians. Students from all over Nashville joined hands in a service-filled day to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Over 300 volunteers from Belmont, Fisk, Lipscomb, Tennessee State, Trevecca and Vanderbilt teamed up for MLK Day of Service on Saturday. Dr. King believed that anyone could serve. He revolutionized the society he was living in with values that are still relevant today. The day of service provided students with an opportunity to reflect on those values that Dr. King stood for. Students met at TSU to fellowship and kick off the day. The universities partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank, Feed the Children, Project C.U.R.E., Habitat ReStore and Soles4Souls. One group helped to alleviate hunger in Middle Tennessee by sorting through food, while other groups sorted through shoes, medical supplies and recycled materials. For Christin Shatzer, Lipscomb’s SALT Program director, it is a tradition for Lipscomb students serve, especially during the MLK weekend. “For the last number of years, it has always been multi-university collaborative initiative,” Shatzer said. “Given the themes of the holiday we are celebrating, it’s great for us to have collaboration across the different campuses.” Though some students were not familiar with each other, they joined together to make an impact on the community and recognized that as a whole, they are a part of something much larger. “Even though it’s 2015, a lot of the things that we are reminded of as we celebrate MLK Day are just as relevant as ever, if maybe not more pressing than ever,” Shatzer...

For the first time since 2011, the Battle of the Boulevard, volleyball edition, returned to Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons defeated the Lady Bruins in three sets Tuesday night. The closest that Belmont came to winning was in the third set, but Lipscomb finished it off winning 25-21. Senior outside hitter Lauren Ford finished off the night with 10 kills. Ford talked about what it means to rekindle the rivalry with Belmont. “The rivalry is huge. It’s awesome coming back on the court and playing again against them,” Ford said. “Some of the younger girls don’t necessarily have that same passion against Belmont, and so it’s fun to kind of teach them that this is how we do it, and this is the way we play against them every time no matter what.” The Lady Bisons took the first set 25-19 and the second 25-17. Junior Brittany Estes led the way for the quick three-and-out game with 13 kills. She was followed by Ford and senior Sophie Kellerman who had eight kills. Sophomore Kayla Ostrom led the team with 32 assists. Belmont is a non-conference opponent, but as far as conference opponents go, the Lady Bisons are undefeated. Prior to the Belmont matchup, they defeated Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson on the road. Lipscomb is now the no. 1 team in conference. With four teams in action on campus, this is a big weekend for Bison athletics. The fall sports have been excelling as of late, and they are looking to continue that run. This weekend, there are many opportunities for you to take some time from studying and catch a game. Friday, Sept. 24 Starting the big weekend off is the volleyball team as they face Northern Kentucky in Allen Arena; the game starts at 6:30 p.m. The volleyball team is looking to bounce back after losses to Kentucky and Xavier. The men’s soccer team is coming off a big 4-3 victory over Memphis. They will be hosting Georgia State at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 Back at the soccer complex, you can catch the women’s soccer team battle against an in-conference foe, Kennesaw State. This game will start at 7 p.m, and the Lady Bisons are looking to follow up their 1-0 win against Grand Canyon with more success. And if you’re a softball fan and want to check out the softball team after their NCAA tournament run last year, you can watch them in a doubleheader against Belmont. The first game starts at 12:30 p.m. with the second to follow right after. This weekend is full of sporting events on campus. Lady Bison basketball released the competitive 2014-2015 schedule on Aug. 20. The highlight of the schedule for fans will be the game on Dec. 7 against the Tennessee Lady Vols at Allen Arena. “Hosting Tennessee at home is exciting,” red-shirt junior Danay Fothergill said. “We want to look at it as just another game. We want to use our advantages to be competitive and just have fun.” The regular season tips off Nov. 14 with Georgia Southern and Nov. 16 against Wright State. Both non-conference games will be played in Allen Arena. The highly anticipated Battle of the Boulevard matchup will be played Dec. 2 at Belmont. Before ending the non-conference schedule, the Lady Bisons will travel to Ohio to face Xavier on Dec. 20. After the Christmas holidays, Lipscomb takes on Georgia Tech in Atlanta Dec. 29. On Jan. 5 in Allen Arena, Trevecca will be the last team the Lady Bisons play before Atlantic Sun Conference play begins. The last 14 games on the regular season are A-Sun matchups. “We just want to make sure we end non-conference play after Christmas with energy going into conference,” Fothergill said. Jan. 10 starts conference play against Northern Kentucky in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons are ready to show they belong in the stacked A-Sun conference. The first real A-Sun test may come on Jan. 29 against Florida Gulf Coast in Allen Arena. “Florida Gulf Coast brings a lot to the conference and are always a tough matchup,” Fothergill said. “We have something to prove and are ready to show what we have been working on.” The last three out...
