Lipscomb soccer takes home Battle of the Boulevard trophy in overtime victory

The Battle of the Boulevard is routinely one of the biggest games of the year for all Lipscomb and Belmont sports teams. The heated rivalry often leads to physical, heated matches, and this incarnation was no different. In front of the home crowd, the Bisons earned a hard-fought victory in their first game of the season against the rival Bruins 3-2. Senior and captain Luke Gearin, recently voted the pre-season A-Sun Defensive player of the Year, put away the game-winning goal off of a penalty kick in the second half of overtime. Fellow senior and A-Sun pre-season Player of the Year Omar Djabi drew the foul that earned the penalty kick with three minutes to go in the second overtime period. The high-scoring affair began with a goal from junior forward Zach Tarbox fifteen minutes into the game, followed by a Belmont equalizer from sophomore forward AJ Arnold late in the first half. Belmont sophomore keeper Grayson Rector and Lipscomb sophomore keeper Micah Bledsoe made back-to-back key saves for their respective squads early in the second half. Ten minutes into the second half Lipscomb junior midfielder Josue Chavez rocketed a shot in from outside the box to give the Bisons a 2-1 lead. Senior Bruin midfielder Rashad Hyacenth fired in an impressive shot of his own halfway through the second half to tie the game at two apiece. photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

2013 Lipscomb crime stats show rise in burglary, thefts

Lipscomb has a generally good reputation concerning the amount of crimes that occur on campus. But, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s 2013 crime statistics show that the school ranks near the top of the list in comparison to nearby colleges with the number of reported burglaries and thefts. The amount of reported larcenies and thefts have gradually increased from 2010. In 2013, there were 52 reported larcenies/thefts, while in 2012, there were 29, a difference of 23 reports. The difference between burglaries and thefts/larceny, as Lipscomb Assistant Director of Campus Security Patrick Cameron described, is a matter of where the crime occurs. “If you leave your dorm room unlocked, [and] somebody comes in and steals your wallet out of your dorm room, it still counts as a burglary because it’s your residence,” Cameron said. He went on to say that theft occurs when an possession is stolen from a public place that the thief has permission to be in. To the left are the 2013 statistics compared to the past few years. Sophomore molecular biology major Mark Mitchell was a burglary victim last year. He and his roommate left their door unlocked at night quite often, and the money in his wallet was stolen. “I had [about] 100, 200 dollars in my wallet, in my desk, tucked away,” Mitchell said. The thief had walked into his room, taken the money and left. Though Mitchell was stolen from, his outlook on Lipscomb hasn’t changed. He does, however, encourage students to be more aware. “People need to be aware,” Mitchell said. “You need to recognize that this is not a bubble....

Bison baseball tops the conference with series win over Mercer

The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team took the series over the Mercer Bears this weekend and now sits in first place in the Atlantic Sun conference. After a rain delay on Friday, Lipscomb came out on top 4-2.    Mercer struck first with a solo home run by Sasha LaGarde but the Bisons punched back and were winning 2-1 after three innings.   Head Coach Jeff Forehand told Lipscomb Athletics that Friday’s game was just a good game between two good teams.     “Luckily for us we got some fortunate hits and scored when we had runners in scoring position,” Forehand said. “They made a mistake that gave us one run but it was just a good ball game all the way around.”   Saturday’s game resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Bisons to give them the series win. Junior John Allison earned a lead-off walk in first inning and would later score on a sacrifice fly from senior Drew Adams. Junior Grant Massey would also score in the first inning capping off the scoring for the Bisons for the rest of the game.   “It was a great first inning,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “Drew and [Austin] Sistrunk had a couple of clutch, situational at-bats for us to get those runs on the board early. But we have to give Mercer credit because they pitched really well after that point to hold us in check. Both teams made some big plays throughout the game, but we were able to hold on for the win.”   Redshirt junior pitcher Hunter Brothers got the win giving up one run...

Men’s soccer splits games with UK and UAB

Men’s soccer split two games Saturday after playing the University of Kentucky and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In the earlier match against Kentucky, the Bisons fell short, but in the game against UAB the Bisons came away with a 4-2 victory. Sophomore fielder,Reece Holcombe, talked about the different style of play Kentucky used. “Kentucky likes to pass the ball more, they have European players so they like to pass the ball around,” Holcombe said. After a tough loss to the SEC team, the Bisons kept up their energy to get the win over UAB. “UAB is a more physical team, they are a historically bigger team and they like to be more direct,” Holcombe said, “It’s a school first, beating UAB. I think it’s a nice step in the direction that we are going. We’re getting better every year.” Sophomore midfielder, Josue Chavez, says the way they played against UAB made a difference in the outcome. “Both games were decent, Kentucky was harder to score against, but UAB, we were passing the ball better and giving ourselves more chances to score,” Chavez said. Even though the Bisons battled UAB later on in the day, Chavez spoke about how the overall energy of their game was elevated. “Our energy overall against UAB was better than Kentucky, when we were down we used our energy to pick us back up and come back and get the four goals,” Chavez said. The Bisons have been putting work in during the off-season, and it is paying off. “This spring has been tough but it really shows how much better we are getting,”...
