MTSU survived a nail-biter to spoil Lipscomb’s homecoming 73-70 Saturday in Allen Arena. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, the score was 66-66. However, sparked by C.J. Jones’ hit from downtown, and the Blue Raiders eked out the victory. Throughout the game, Lipscomb and MTSU went toe-to-toe, keeping the crowd of students, alums and family members on the edges of their seats. Lipscomb’s Ahsan Asadullah had a big night, scoring 18 points and grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double. He added three blocks and two steals. Another standout was senior guard Andrew Fleming, who added seven rebounds and four assists for the second straight game. Asadullah and Fleming were joined in double-figure scoring by senior guard Michael Buckland and sophomore guard Jake Wolfe. Although the Bisons had four players in double-digit scoring, offense was a major problem for both teams throughout the game. Scoring runs were short lived, and droughts were the storyline for much of the game. On one such run, after Lipscomb took a 7-2 lead, the Bisons ended up missing their next nine shots. MTSU experienced similar difficulty, only making three of their first 14 attempts. While both teams started slowly, it was the Blue Raiders who put together a stronger performance in the first half and led 37-31 going into the break. After halftime, Asadullah pulled Lipscomb to 49-49 game by scoring six of his eight second-half points all within the first five minutes. Spirits were high at the Friday night matchup between the Lipscomb Bisons and South Florida Bulls, however Lipscomb took the loss with the final score at 3-1. This marks the third season loss for the Bisons. The first 35 minutes of the game went on without any scoring from either team, until Bulls player Jonathan Rosales made the first goal of the night. After halftime, South Florida player Emilio Ycaza scored two consecutive goals which brought the Bulls to three points. The last score of the night went to the Bisons, with player Killian Byrne making the first goal of his career. This was Lipscomb’s second matchup with University of South Florida, they formally fell short 3-0 against the team back in 2017. The Bisons’ season is currently at 1-3-1, after Tuesday night’s tie with the Evansville Aces. It is time to invest in some new Bison gear after Lipscomb Athletics signed a five-year deal to make Under Armour the official sports outfitter. This partnership, signed this week, gives the Bisons a number of unique advantages over fellow ASUN teams. Lipscomb’s agreement with Under Armour makes it the only ASUN member to have an exclusive, direct partnership with an apparel powerhouse. By joining the Under Armour family, Lipscomb Athletics will have newly available funds that can be used throughout the department. “Coming off of one of the greatest competitive years in the history of Lipscomb Athletics, I am excited to see what’s next for us, and I’m glad to have Under Armour as a part of the plan to elevate our programs,” Lipscomb Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson said in a statement released by Lipscomb Athletics. “Recruits, serious athletes and casual fans alike all are familiar with the Under Armour brand, and we are proud they will be outfitting our Bison fans and teams in the coming years.” Not only does this deal offer Lipscomb monetary savings, but additionally Under Armour offers an annual allotment of promotional dollars to be spent on apparel, equipment and uniforms; a significantly reduced rate on all additional apparel and equipment purchases; marketing and branding dollars to enhance the athletic facilities and direct access to UA’s inventory and customer service. This deal covers all of the Bisons sports teams except men’s soccer, which has a separate arrangement. Lipscomb closed out the Summer Celebration conference with the music and fireworks of the 15th annual Bison Block Party. Summer Celebration, previously known as the “Lipscomb Lectures,” is when Lipscomb opens the campus for guest speakers and hundreds of visitors from the community. The celebration started over 90 years ago and is one of Lipscomb’s oldest traditions. Each year since about 2003 Lipscomb has celebrated Independence Day by hosting the free, grand finale Bison Block Party in the Allen Arena Mall. This year’s big finale was June 28. The block party kicks off the Independence Week celebrations by offering the community an evening of food vendors, live music and fun. Lipscomb alumni bands Arcadian Wild, Dave’s Highway, and S. Grant Parker performed as did the Faculty Brass Quintet with Ben Blasko. The full evening was hosted by retired long-time WSMV-TV sports anchor and Christian inspirational speaker Rudy Kalis. Summer is already over for the Lipscomb basketball teams, which have returned to campus to get acquainted with new faces among players and staff and begin preparations for their 2019-20 campaigns. Although these teams experienced very different stories last year—with the men’s team’s NIT Finals run earning them the ASUN Beam Award and the women experiencing one of the worst seasons in program history—both teams begin this season after tremendous turnover and tumult in their programs. The men’s team’s turnover came as the result of the success of prior coach Casey Alexander, who took the job at his alma mater, Belmont, after legendary coach Rick Byrd retired. In his six years at Lipscomb, Alexander’s teams had a 113-84 record, posting three straight 20-victory seasons, including the 29-8 campaign that took them to the NIT finals last season. The year before, he led the Bisons to their first-ever NCAA March Madness berth. It was a lack of success that shaped the change in the women’s program. In four years, coach Greg Brown posted a 44-164 record. The Lady Bisons finished last season 4-25 in a campaign that included a 19-game losing streak. The school looked for new vigor from a new leader for that program. After a number of player departures, two first-time Division I head coaches, men’s basketball’s Lennie Acuff and women’s basketball’s Lauren Sumski, take over as the new head coaches of Lipscomb’s basketball programs.
