Lipscomb University “Session Players” hosted former American Idol contestants Colton Dixon and special guest Cody Fry on Wednesday night in Collins Auditorium for an evening of music. Cody Fry opened the night performing with student musicians from the Session Players. Dr. Ben Blasko introduced Dixon and shared a few words of how his friendship with the musician began. Blasko shared how Dixon’s song “Through All of It” got him through many personal rough life events and how much the song meant to him. Dixon performed that song tonight, and Blasko said it was special to be able to direct the session players in that song. Dixon’s wife, Annie Dixon, also made a special appearance tonight during his performance of “Through All of It.” Dixon ended the concert around 8:30 p.m., noting that his house is full of “big Preds fans,” and he was going to get the audience home in time for the game. « ‹ of 2 ›...

A packed house rocked out to free music for a great cause in Allen Arena Tuesday night as country music legend Charlie Daniels and a host of others headlined the annual ioStudio Charlie Daniels’ Scholarship for Heroes Tour. In its fourth year, the show, always led by Daniels, helps benefit the Yellow Ribbon initiative, a program that pledges to help post-9/11 GI Bill veterans receive an education with little-to-no cost at Lipscomb University. This year, there are around 200 Yellow Ribbon students that attend school. Alongside Daniels, The Grascals, Chris Young, Keni Thomas, Bleach and surprise guest Jason Aldean all played a mix of current hits and classics in order to give the Yellow Ribbon students in attendance an exciting night to remember. Before the show, Daniels met with the Yellow Ribbon students and posed in a group picture. Daniels said that the veterans are brave individuals who endure daily strife all for the ultimate aim of receiving an education. “It takes something that a lot of people don’t have to get out of a bed, to turn off the pain medicine and to walk into a situation where you’re trying to better yourself,” Daniels said. “Just the act of getting out of bed every day is a bigger job than most of us can ever even imagine.” To Daniels, the Yellow Ribbon students – and all those who serve in the military – may have different stories, but all deserve to be recognized in the highest regard for their service to the country. “Everybody’s story is different, but everybody’s got one, and everybody has really struggled to be...

The Lipscomb Guitar Ensemble put on its spring concert April 10. About 50 students and faculty members attended the concert. This semester, the ensemble was made up of sophomore Mack Hoskins, senior Marco Perez and their professor Mark Godwin. This past Friday, Lipscomb students were given a rare treat. Mat Kearney, best known for hit songs “Nothing Left to Lose”, “Undeniable” and more recently, “Ships in the Night” and “Hey Mama”, headlined the free SGA-sponsored spring concert alongside Kiernan McMullan in Alumni Auditorium. Kearney, a resident of Nashville, offered insight into his past, his music, his faith and his love of everything Lipscomb. A native of Eugene, Ore., Kearney’s found his musical influence from A Tribe Called Quest, Bob Dylan and Weezer. Growing up, any sort of hip-hop music caught Kearney’s attention. In college, Kearney started to write his own music. “I would steal my roommate’s guitar and go sit on the front porch, and I was so bad at covering other people’s music that I would just start writing my own songs.” Everything changed when Kearney helped a friend move to Nashville. As a junior soccer player at the University of California State, Chico, Kearney agreed to help a friend drive to Tennessee. “We drove across country in the summer in our un-air-conditioned Chevy S-10 and got to Nashville. And by the end of the summer, I was hanging out at Fido; that was it,” Kearney said. “I was like ‘I’m not going back. I’m not going home’.” Kearney, who had just started to record music here in town, saw that Nashville was the place to be. “I just called home and said ‘I’m moving to Nashville’.” Kearney, a Christian, wants his faith to play a major part his music. “I think my faith is a huge part of what I do,” Kearney said. “Being a Christian,...

Mat Kearney is set to headlinethe 2012 Spring concert at Lipscomb in Alumni Auditorium. Up and coming musician Kiernan McMullan will open at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Mar. 2nd. Only Lipscomb students are permitted to attend the show and will be asked show their student I.D. upon entry. Kearney is a singer/songwriter based out of Nashville. He has had four songs in the top 20 thus far, and has toured with the likes of John Mayer, Sheryl Crow and the The Fray. Kearney also headlined the 2007 “You ‘Oughta Know” tour sponsored by VH1. Kearney’s latest album, Young Love, got up to No. 4 on the US Billboard charts and No. 1 on the Christian music charts.
