When the Franklin Theatre re-opened its doors on Friday, June 3, 3011, hundreds of people packed the downtown Franklin streets in order to celebrate the restoration of one of the greatest landmarks of community’s history. The original Franklin Theatre opened its doors in 1937, and at the time the price of admission was 10 cents for children and 25 cents for adults. Through the years the theatre was a tremendously popular staple of the downtown Franklin streets, as in several ways it set trends for an ever growing community. Some of these trends included becoming the first air-conditioned building, as well as housing the first public restrooms in 1938. This landmark set precedents in other areas of the community as well, as it did in 1940 when the theatre manager and city agreed to allow movies to be shown on Sundays, as long as they weren’t operating during church hours. Through the years the theatre gained more and more popularity, even after a name change to the Franklin Cinema, and in 2004, the Franklin Cinema hosted the world premiere of Peter Berg’s, Friday Night Lights, a popular film featuring local celebrity Tim McGraw. Again in 2005, the cinema held the world premiere of Elizabethtown. A movie packed with star power including Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst. So when the theatre closed its doors in 2007, a great hole was left in the community which had grown accustomed to seeing modern films in a very nostalgic setting. “This place means so much to so many people,” said Lindsay George, Community Relations Director of the Franklin Theatre. “Everyone has a story...

Christian musician Jeremy Camp takes the spotlight and urges Lipscomb students to help their neighbors during his first “Come Celebrate Nashville” concert at 7 p.m. Friday in Allen Arena. The free concert is the first in what he plans to make an annual event that is aimed at getting Lipscomb students to help in the community. While there is no admission cost, he is asking that people bring donations for Second Harvest Food Bank and Warm Coats from Warm Hearts. “He is a great artist and I’m so glad he is performing at Lipscomb” said Matt Mitchell, a senior biology major. “This is a great opportunity to give back to Nashville.” Second Harvest, which distributes food to those in need, is trying to restock the pantry that was pretty much depleted by the needs of the city’s May flood victims. LU students can help out by bringing canned goods to the concert. The Warm Coats program is in need of new and gently used winter coats to be distributed throughout the city as the colder weather arrives. Because of the concert, there will not be a Lipscomb in Motion tailgate held prior to the Lady Bisons soccer game against North Florida, which also begins at...

For college students, free entertainment is always a plus, and Lipscomb University students need to look no further than Lipscomb’s own A Cappella Singers. The choral group performed their spring concert on April 12, 2010 in Willard Collins Alumni Auditorium. This was the group’s 16th program of the 2009-2010 concert season, and they will still have several more performances. The College of Arts and Sciences School of Fine Performing Arts Department of Music presented GLORIA! Monteverdi and Vivaldi. A section of Gloria was performed comprised of twelve songs sung by the A Cappella Singers conducted by Dr. Gary P. Wilson, accompanied by an orchestra coordinated by Carolyn Wann Bailey. Dr. Gary P. Wilson is a conductor, scholar, and teacher. His responsibilities as Director of Choral Activities include conducting the A Cappella Singers, overseeing the choral/vocal program, and directing the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. He teaches choral conducting methods, voice, and music theory. The A Cappella Singers are a premiere choral ensemble at Lipscomb University. The group is comprised of about 75 members and is open to those in various degree programs across campus. Each year the group performs a wide variety of genres and styles. Melanie Matthews, a sophomore from Gulf Breeze, Fla., and a vocal performance major sings soprano in the chorus. Matthews has been a part of the chorus for two years. “A Cappella singing is beautiful,” Matthews says. “When I came to hear the choir sing I immediately fell in love.” Matthews enjoys being a part of many major events on campus, such as the “Lighting of the Green”. The A Cappella Singers also perform in many...
