Local coffeehouses delight Lipscomb students

Within five minutes of Lipscomb alone, there’s the Frothy Monkey, Bongo Java, The Perch, Starbucks, The Well and Fido. The campus is almost surrounded by coffee shops. And there are plenty more, with new ones opening seemingly every week or so in and around Nashville. The number of shops makes it easy to jump around from place to place, but there is something about the familiar look, feel and taste of a coffee shop that lures people into going back again and again. For some, it’s the atmosphere that makes them a loyal customer. For others it is the location. Here’s a sampling of three that Lipscomb students have visited and recommend. Brianna Langley, a freshman communications major from Knoxville, finds a favorite in Cafe Coco at 210 Louise Avenue, down near Centennial Park and the Exit/In. “They are open 24-7, which is unique,” Langley said. “They’re also like a bar-slash-restaurant-slash-live-music venue, so they’re more than just a coffee shop. And the atmosphere is so different there. You can go at any time and see all walks of life.” For other students, coffee shops are all about the basics – the taste and quality of the coffee itself. “The Well is great,” said Mackenzie Carter, sophomore youth ministry major from Huntsville, Ala. “I go for coffee there more for the taste than the atmosphere, because if I have homework, it’s easier just to go to the Starbucks on campus.” The Well is an easy desination for Lipscomb students as itis located at 2035 Richard Jones Road in Green Hills. Sportsman’s Grille offers spacious family atmosphere

Brentwood’s Sportsman’s Lodge offers a perfect family getaway meal without straying far from the Lipscomb neighborhood. While diners expect a long wait in line on a Saturday night, the large size of the Sportsman’s Grille eliminated that problem, and the four of us were seated as soon as we entered. There is plenty of space to have a large amount of tables. The seating is extremely comfortable and each person has enough space for themselves. But of course there’s more than comfortable seating. There is comfort food. For starters, there are about 12 different food items you can choose from including chicken tenders, fried mozzarella sticks, onion rings, salsa and chips. We selected the cheese-smothered fries, and it did not take long for my table to have two plates completely cleaned. The best word to describe them is mouthwatering. The restaurant’s signature dishes consist of roasted, smoked ribs, hand-breaded catfish, barbecue on Cajun cornbread and large fresh salads.  One person in my group tried a salad. She chose the salmon salad, which came in a large bowl giving her more than enough to eat. I tried a dish that I really have never seen at any other place, “Black Jack” Chicken. It is blackened chicken with Monterey Jack cheese and spicy mustard on a toasted hoagie roll. I enjoy the taste of spicy food, and this was the normal spicy that comes to mind, but it has its own taste. Crema coffee impresses students

If students are not talking about Nashville’s music, they’re talking about Nashville’s coffee. Crema has the best in the city. Located near downtown, tucked away next to a gas station, Crema’s space used to be an old diesel repair shop. Owned and operated by the same individuals, Crema was opened in 2008 with the mission of serving great coffee; and that’s just what they’re doing! Making coffee in a completely different way, Crema uses small roasted beans and quality equipment to create a unique, fresh taste that can’t be found anywhere else. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of coffee, but Crema’s Cuban (a concoction of sweetened condensed milk, steamed milk and espresso) is slowly changing my mind. Their Chai Tea Latte is flavorful, as well! Offering a variety of sweet pastries, muffins and cakes, Crema is the perfect place to meet for a business meeting in the morning, or for a quick snack in the afternoon. The baristas are all very friendly and enjoy talking to their customers. They make each individual feel right at home as soon as they walk in the door. Crema’s atmosphere is simple, warm and inviting. It’s hide-away rustic charm reminded me of the place a closet artist might come to think. The tables and chairs around the shop are not pushed close together, like in some other coffee shops, and visitors are given the space they need to enjoy their coffee without feeling rushed. Taqueria del Sol impresses on first visit with excellent cuisine

Taqueria del Sol, the new restaurant in 12th Avenue South, has certainly got my vote.  The Atlanta-based restaurant opened for the first time in Nashville on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The name of the restaurant makes the diner think of of truly authentic Mexican cuisine, but that is not entirely the case.  While Taqueria del Sol is known for fantastic Mexican food, there are some delicious nontraditional items that are much more prominent. The first thing the waiter said to me when suggesting foods to try was that I should try the turnip greens.  Now, I had never had them before, and turnip greens did not sound like they would taste good with a taco, but I gave it a shot.  I was not disappointed.  The turnip greens were spectacular!  I make a point of emphasizing them because these turnip greens have been listed as one of the “100 Food You Absolutely Must Try Before You Die” according to Bon Appetit and Garden & Gun magazines. Another menu item that was especially delightful yet different for a Mexican restaurant was the shrimp corn chowder.  I have never seen corn chowder as a Mexican dish, but either way, it was absolutely the best thing I tasted.  I recommend this dish whenever you visit. Onto some more dishes — tacos and burritos.  Taqueria del Sol has some specialty tacos.  For example, I had the Memphis taco.  It is simply a taco that consists of pulled pork, barbeque sauce and cheese (if you ask).  I loved it.
