It’s been 441 days and one full calendar year since the last Lipscomb Volleyball game in Allen Arena, but Sunday afternoon, the Lady Bisons were finally able to return to Don Meyer court and kick off their home campaign with a 3-1 victory over the MTSU Blue Raiders. After COVID-19 delayed fall NCAA sports and all of the LUV team spent 28 days in quarantine, conducting team meetings and workouts via zoom in their isolated rooms, Lipscomb’s volleyball season seemed in jeopardy. But, head coach Brandon Rosenthal and his team persevered and are now getting to reap the rewards of their hard work and patience over this extended off-season. Although COVID-19 caused a number of problems for Lipscomb, the hardships brought this team together, producing the tightest knit group that the team has seen in a while. This team chemistry allowed the Lady Bisons to win in dominating fashion this weekend. Sunday’s matchup was part of a doubleheader that began on Friday afternoon in Murfreesboro, where the Bisons walked away with a 3-0 win. Sunday the Lady Bisons also got off to a quick start winning the first set 25-8, but it was the Blue Raiders who came out strong in the second set and evened the match at 1-1, capitalizing on a number of attack errors from the Bisons. The Lady Bisons pulled out another home victory on Sunday night against the Bellarmine Knights. They remained undefeated at home on the young season, led by a career-high 28 point performance from sophomore guard Jaylyn Holcomb. Though the first matchup saw an even performances across the lineup from the Bisons on Saturday afternoon, with all five starters scoring in double figures, Sunday night saw Holcomb come away with everything on the floor. The 5’9″ sophomore from Murfreesboro shot a steller 11-15 (73%) from the floor. The beginning of the game started right where the Lady Bisons left off their previous performance with threes coming all around. On the opponent’s side, things got off to a rough start as the Knights only put up 10 points in the first quarter, six of which came from senior guard Tasia Jeffries. After one quarter, Lipscomb led 21-10. However, the 2nd quarter saw a scoring drought for the Lady Bisons who missed all their three-point attempts. Seemingly trading places, Bellarmine shot 4-5 from the beyond the arc late in the 2nd quarter and went on a 17-8 run cutting the Lipscomb lead from 13 to just 5 with only 59 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Going into halftime though Lipscomb still held the lead 33-28. The two teams came out of halftime at seemingly the same clip. The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has won a combined six conference games over the past two seasons. After falling in its first two ASUN games last weekend, Lipscomb got its first in an 84-72 home opener over Division I newcomer Bellarmine. It was the kind of balanced performance you’d dream of if you’re a head coach: all five starters for the Lady Bisons (4-5, 1-2 ASUN) scored in double figures. Lipscomb also went 16-of-32 from downtown. Junior guard and Hendersonville native Jane Deason tabbed a team-leading 15 points, while senior forward Taylor Clark had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sydney Shelton, Jalyn Holcomb and Casey Collier all brought in 14 points apiece. Bellarmine (0-6, 0-1 ASUN) just joined the conference this year after making the leap from Division II, where it made 16 NCAA tourney appearances. The Knights actually scored a season-high 72 points on Sunday, with senior guard Tasia Jeffries setting a new career-high with a team-leading 25. Bellarmine also shot 46 percent from downtown after averaging less than 20 percent of three-point makes all season long, but the Knights could not overcome large deficits throughout the game. Lipscomb’s 32 first-quarter points made Bellarmine’s day difficult from the get-go. The Lady Bisons led 21-7 with 3:58 left after Shelton connected from downtown. Bellarmine used a timeout at that point to try and slow Lipscomb’s momentum. It was a homecoming on Rocky Top Monday night when former Tennessee Lady Vols Lauren Sumski and Ariel Massengale returned to the Summitt leading their Lipscomb Lady Bisons against Tennessee. However, it was the hometown Lady Vols who won this matchup 77-52. Early turnovers kept the game scoreless until Tennessee finally got a jumper to go with eight minutes left in the first quarter. Lipscomb was able to respond with a shot down low from junior center Dorie Harrison, but it was the Lady Vols who went into the media break with a 10-2 lead. Coming back from the break Lipscomb was able to get back into the game off of three-pointers from sophomore guard Jalyn Holcomb and freshman guard Jordan Peete, but Tennessee’s size allowed them to regain control of the game leading at the end of the first quarter 26-11, while out-rebounding the Lady Bisons 15-5. Lipscomb’s scoring drought a free-throw broke from Holcomb and a three-pointer by Peete — meanwhile, the Lady Bisons’ defense held Tennessee to their own scoring drought lasting for over 5 minutes. Still, Tennessee took a 36-19 lead into the second half. Senior forward Taylor Clark started the second half off with a three-pointer, but the Lady Vols went on an 11-0 run to take control of the game. The Bisons biggest loss was not on the scoreboard after the final whistle, but during the third quarter when Harrison went down after being hit in the head by a Lady Vol shoulder. The Lipscomb womens basketball team won their third home game of the week 82-60 Friday afternoon against the Converse College after taking advantage of the Valkyries turnovers improving their record to 3-1. The Lady Bisons got off to another fast start against the Valkryies leading 7-0, but in what has been a season of runs for Lipscomb, the Bisons quickly lost their lead as Converse went on a 10-2 run aided by Lipscomb turnovers. Lipscomb was able to recover the lead behind senior forward Taylor Clark’s second three of the first quarter, and shots from junior guard Sydney Shelton and freshman guard Jordan Peete padded the lead for the Lady Bisons going into the second quarter. Missed shots and turnovers allowed the Valkryies to stay close, but Lipscomb would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the first half, leading at the break by eight points off of 10 second quarter turnovers from Converse. Coming back from the half, Lipscomb began to take advantage in transition offense, holding the height advantage over the guard heavy Converse roster. Points in the paint from sophomore center Dorie Harrison and a shot from downtown by Clark finally provided some separation for the Lady Bisons, who extended their lead to 15 points before the media break. The Valkyries held Lipscomb without a field goal for three minutes, but continued turnovers and fouls kept the Lady Bisons ahead by 15 at the end of the third quarter.
