The semester may quickly be drawing to an end, but Lipscomb’s Student Government Association is still in planning mode, working with administration to govern students more effectively. “Something that we’re currently working on internally is that we’re trying to revise the constitution,” SGA President Andrew Hunt said. “We have found that Lipscomb has changed a lot in the past few years,” Hunt said. “We feel like we can better work with the administration.” The constitution was last revised in 2010. “Things have changed a lot even since then,” he said. “We’re trying to restructure SGA.” Hunt, a senior and corporate management major, also said SGA is working with the provost’s office to revamp certain majors. “We recently sent out some surveys to students to see what the demand for each major is,” Hunt said. “They are some departments that are more adult study heavy, like business, [law, justice and society], social work, where classes are only offered at night.” Hunt says SGA wants to give a chance for students to be able to get more involved in night activities. “We’re working with the provost to see if there’s any way we can take students out of [night classes] by offering the classes during the day as well,” Hunt said. Some SGA plans are already in motion, such as adding a new printer to the Ezell Center. “Hopefully, after spring break, we’ll have a printer in Ezell,” Hunt said. “We’ve been working with a lot of the departments in Ezell to see who can fund it. Circle Players, partnered with Lipscomb’s Department of Theatre, will open Shrek the Musical this Thursday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium. Show participants has been rehearsing music and preparing for the production since January. “It’s a blast,” said sophomore theatre major Jonah Jackson, who plays the main antagonist in the musical, Lord Farquaad. “I’ve had more fun with this character than any other character I’ve done.” Shrek the Musical runs March 6-8, 13-15 at 7:30 p.m., and March 9 at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for Lipscomb faculty, $5 for students with ID or free, with SGA providing the free tickers. Hello, Lumination readers! As we celebrate the beginning of 2014, it’s time to take a look back at some of the biggest stories at Lipscomb during the year that was – 2013. Before we take a look at the year’s top stories, we take a moment to pause and remember those we lost in the past year. Former Lipscomb professors Axel Swang, Patty Dugger, Oliver Yates, and Bill Collins all passed, as did Lipscomb student Isaac Phillips and Bisons super fan Chuck Ross. We continue to pray for their families and friends. A few stories right on the heels of our top 10 list involved some special visitors to campus and two major, annual Lipscomb events, as well as a few people in new positions of leadership. U.S. women’s soccer team practiced at university field in February, drawing a large crowd of soccer fans and inquisitive Lipscomb students. In March, YouTube sensations Walk Off the Earth headlined the spring concert at Alumni Auditorium. In April, Singarama celebrated its 50th anniversary, and, in December, Lighting of the Green held its 9th installment. In 2013, we also welcomed Steve Davidson as a new campus minister and Jim Humphrey as the new director of security. And, in April, Andrew Hunt was elected to be the new SGA president. As October comes to an end, Halloween isn’t the only thing on the mind of Lipscomb students. Many highly anticipated events are returning this fall and promise to bring even more fun and excitement. Paint the Herd returned Friday, Oct. 25, in it’s fourth year under the sponsorship of the Lipscomb Student Government Association. Student Activities Director Louis Nelms said Paint the Herd started his junior year in 2010 at Lipscomb University, and it has been a hit every year since. “It’s one of Lipscomb’s bigger events,” Nelms said. “There is always several hundreds of people there. It’s going to be one students talk about for a while. It’s one that students look forward to all year.” “It’s fun, it’s this Friday, and it’s going to be a blast,” he added. Paint the Herd isn’t the only exciting event that has been planned. The always popular annual dodge ball tournament put on by Campus Ministry is also just around the corner. This years ninth annual tournament is comes back to campus on the first of November in Bison Square. “It started off as just a goofy event for people to dress up around Halloween and play dodge ball and it sort of evolved into this massive celebration of what I think is the Lipscomb culture,” Nelms said. “I always tell people there is two ways to win dodge ball. One, you can win the actual tournament and you take a trophy home, but no one remembers you. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place.
