Lipscomb’s Student Government Association gathers every other week to hear proposals, vote on events, discuss student involvement on campus and partake in other matters. On the off-week, SGA members meet in their separate committees (academic, student life, spiritual) to plan and prepare for events. Senate meetings are open to students who are interested in learning more about SGA. Meetings are bi-weekly on Mondays at 7:30 p.m.. The next SGA senate meeting will be Sept. 23. It is Lumination’s intent to attend the SGA senate meetings this year to inform Lipscomb’s student body about the ongoing decisions that SGA makes. ______________________________________________________________________ Notes from the Sept. 9, 2013 meeting Lipscomb’s Student Government Association met on Monday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m.. Roll was called and all members were present. Four student groups submitted proposals for funding to SGA. The proposed funding will be voted on at the next senate meeting on Sept. 24. The following groups asked for SGA to sponsor their Lipscomb-based event: Relay for Life – Cece Ramsey proposed that SGA partner with Relay for Life with a $8000 sponsorship. The funding will cover t-shirts, Relay materials, and ETS. Relay for Life has set a goal to raise $37,000 this year. The theme is Olympics, as the relay is set for one week before the winter Olympics in Russia. Relay for Life will be Friday, Jan.24 – Saturday, Jan. 25 in Allen Arena at Lipscomb University. LU Department of Theatre – Will Miranne and Brooke Ferguson proposed that SGA fund up to $16,500 for student ticket sales for the department’s four upcoming shows. One of Lipscomb’s Student Government Association’s aspirations is to help create an energized campus atmosphere every year. To SGA President Andrew Hunt, this year will hold plenty of exciting opportunities for LU students. “I feel like it is our responsibility to make sure students have a good experience,” said Hunt, a Corporate Management senior from Centerville, Tenn. “We are going to provide events . We want people to have fun, but we want to provide spiritually uplifting opportunities and academically challenging opportunities, too.” SGA is partnering with Residence Life and the Student Activities Board to bring bigger and better events to students on campus. Among this year’s anticipated events are Lipscomb’s annual Paint the Herd, a fall concert and a spring concert. “We can have a whole lot more events [if we partner with Residence Life and SAB],” Hunt said, affirming that the events can be of better quality with the partnership. “In the end, it’s not about if this is a SGA event,” Hunt said. “It’s about students having the opportunity to do this because SGA had a part in it.” Students can be looking forward to this semester’s fall concert with Dave Barnes, which will be on Oct. 1 in Collins Alumni Auditorium at 7 p.m. The spring headliner will be announced at a later date. Lipscomb’s Student Activities Board has been working hard this summer to create a full slate of events to entertain students during the fall semester, including some usual suspects and a concert with a noted local musician. Thanks to the partnership with SAB, SGA, Campus Ministry and Lipscomb Athletics, there is some sort of activities planned every day of the week throughout the fall. If you take a look at the schedule, you’ll recognize some of the main attractions that come up every year: the Dodgeball Tournament, Paint the Herd, and the Running of the Bison. In addition to the normal events, SAB added more events with the help of their on campus partnerships. SGA President Andrew Hunt has been working alongside SAB to create more events every week on campus. “Besides some new events, the only major difference for this semester is that we’re working a lot more closely with SAB,” Hunt said. “We hope that splitting the cost of events will help both of our budgets go further, so we will be able to have more, higher-quality events.” Local musician Dave Barnes will kick off Homecoming Week in concert on Oct.1 at 7 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium. SGA announced on Wednesday that Andrew Hunt had been elected as the new President of Lipscomb’s Student Government Association. Hunt will take over the position previously held by Patrick Grace. Drew Watson was announced as the new Vice President, the SGA title Hunt held this past school year. Julia Rox will once again hold the title of Secretary, while Melissa Parrish won the title of Treasurer. Hunt expressed his excitement in the victory. “I was really, really nervous going into it, and I really had no idea what to expect,” Hunt said. “But I’m really, really excited.” Hunt shared a couple of the tasks he hopes to accomplish in his first days as the new SGA President, among those being the need to finalize the new addition of off-campus meal plans. “We’ve still got some stuff to nail down about off-campus meal plans, so I’m really going to try and finish that up,” Hunt said. Hunt also said that he hopes to establish an SGA presence on the university’s Board of Trustees. Saying he was both surprised and excited about his win, Watson also shared his hopes for next semester, underlining his desire for improved communication between SGA and the student body. “I really want to work on communication,” Watson said. “We’re going to start by getting the word out and accepting ideas from the student body.” Kaley Greene was named Miss Lipscomb, while Tyler Osborne was named the Bachelor of Ugliness.
