Student athletes and coaches filled the court of Allen Arena on Thursday night, but this time, it was not for a game. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the inaugural Lippy Awards in Allen Arena to honor various members of Lipscomb University’s sports teams. The awards show was hosted by student TJ Ojehomon and women’s soccer assistant coach Chris Klotz. Both female and male athletes of the year were competitive categories, but for the female award, sophomore cross country/track and field runner Dani Walker and junior volleyball player Jewell Dobson tied. On the men’s side, track and field high-jumper Gemikal Prude, who broke the high jump record earlier in the year, won as well. Prude said that winning the award was a blessing. “Winning this is quite the blessing,” Prude said. “It’s a feeling that can’t really be described, especially when you feel as if you’re undeserving.” The biggest award of the night, the Best Team Award, went to the women’s track and field/cross country. Senior runner Lacey Printz said that the team worked hard and credited the coaches and team captains for keeping the team focused. “This is the most incredible team we’ve had, and we just love running together and just having fun and doing it for God’s glory,” Printz said. To open the night, the James R. Byers Award was presented to senior track and field sprinter Tucker Peabody, senior volleyball player Caitlin Dotson and junior cross country/track and field runner Tessa Hoefle. The Lipscomb baseball team lost the second game of the Battle of the Boulevard 13-3 Tuesday night at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville. The Bruins scored eight runs in the first two innings, and Lipscomb did not get on the board until the third inning. Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand told athletics that the Bisons struggled to come back after the rough start. “When you get down early in the game, it’s deflating for the whole team,” Forehead said. “We got off to a bad start and nobody is trying to figure it out any quicker than the players and the coaching staff.” Redshirt sophomore infielder Adam Lee got an infield single in the third to start things. Junior infielder Mike Kote hit a triple to score Lee. Redshirt junior outfielder Josh Lee hit a sacrifice fly to score Korte. Lipscomb would score one more run in the fifth off an RBI single from freshman infielder Hunter Hanks. Hanks went 2-for-4 at the plate. Adam Lee went 2-for-3. Belmont’s junior infielder Matt Beaty earned six RBIs with a triple that plated two runs as well as a three run homerun. Junior Chase Cunningham got the win for the Bruins giving up two earned runs and two hits. Redshirt freshman Dalton Curtis took the loss for the Bisons giving up five earned runs and three hits. Curtis’ record falls to 0-3. Spring sports are in full spring while winter sports are wrapping up. Here’s what you may have missed this week in Nashville sports. Lipscomb Softball: Lady Bisons softball continues their strong start, this week behind senior pitcher Ashley Anderson who pitched 12 shutout innings during the team’s sweep of University of North Florida. She received her first Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week award for her shutout performance. Lipscomb followed up that sweep with another, this time over Ohio. Their record sits at 17-3 overall, and their next game is a double header against Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Lipscomb Baseball: Bisons baseball is currently on a three game winning streak after wins over Connecticut and Western Kentucky. Junior shortstop Grant Massey received the Atlantic Sun Baseball Player of the Week after he had three RBI’s and seven walks in the Bisons three wins. Lipscomb has a three game series against Oakland this weekend, including a double header on Saturday at Dugan Field, starting at 12 p.m. Lipscomb Men’s Basketball: The Bisons basketball season ended in a double overtime thriller at the first level of the A-Sun Men’s Basketball Championship against ETSU on Tuesday. Despite having a 16 point lead in the second half, the Bisons would fall one point short in double overtime. Junior forward Malcolm Smith led Lipscomb with 24 points and scored his 1000th point in the loss. The Bisons finished with a 15-15 record, the first time they’ve been at .500 since the 2010-2011 season. The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team made a big statement this weekend against the University of Connecticut by taking two of the three games played. The Bisons pushed the Huskies to the brink in game one of the series by forcing extra innings, but failed to execute when it came down to the end. Junior shortstop Grant Massey did, however, launch his first home run of the year in the second inning to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead that eventually faded. UConn got on the board in the fifth inning after third baseman Bryan Daniello laced a line drive into the right field corner and eventually scored on an infield ground out. The Huskies took their first lead of the game in the seventh after putting several at bats together. Max McDowell was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position. He was then driven home by a single to left field. UConn continually executed when they needed to. The Huskies capitalized on some Bison mistakes which lead them to the 6-4 extra inning victory. In game two of the series, the Bisons were in familiar territory. They once again forced UConn into extra innings and this timed executed. Senior designated hitter Chad Shannon drew a bases loaded walk in the tenth inning to give Lipscomb the 4-3-comeback win. The Bisons got a good start to the tenth inning after Massey bounced a double off the center field wall. ESPN’s SportsCenter rated a Lipscomb baseball catch as number 3 on its Top 10 plays list today. Chris Nunn, a junior left-handed pitcher from Memphis, made a no look, behind the back catch in a game against Jacksonville at Dugan Field over the weekend, landing him in the spotlight. The catch ranked number 9 initially and then moved up to the third spot at lunch time today, according to Mark McGee, media relations director for Lipscomb Athletics. The Bisons (25-27, 10-14 A-Sun) swept Jacksonville in an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader Saturday, May 12, winning the first game 6-1 and the second 6-2, on “Ken Dugan Day.” According to lipscombsports.com, “Nunn kept the Jacksonville offense off balance to pick up his first win of the season tossing five and two-thirds innings. Nunn scattered seven Dolphins hits, walked only one batter and fanned one Jacksonville hitter.” The final home regular season game was Tuesday, May 14 against Tennessee Tech. The Bisons lost 5-4.
