Spring has been full of honors for Lipscomb journalists and Lumination Network. Honorees from the Lumination staff attended the Southeast Journalism Conference in February and the Society of Professional Journalists Region 12 conference at Lipscomb this past weekend to receive their awards. The Southeast Journalism Conference (SEJC) held its 25th annual convention in Troy, Ala. on Feb. 19, 2011. The conference was a learning experience for the students as well as a competition. Twenty professional journalists from magazines and newspapers around the country judged entries submitted prior to the conference. The SEJC judges named 126 of the 331 applicants the “Best of the South.” Three Lumination Network writers were honored at the conference, as well as the overall website being named the seventh best college website amongst the 33 eligible schools in the area. Lumination’s managing editor Hunter Patterson, a junior journalism major from Waverly, Tenn., was awarded second place in the category of Best Multimedia Journalist. Rachel Carden, a junior multimedia production and journalism double-major from Smyrna, Tenn., placed ninth in the News Reporter portion of the competition. Carden was extremely pleased with the level of hospitality that Troy University showed the conference attendees, as well as how well manicured the campus was upon their arrival for the event. The final honoree from Lipscomb was junior multimedia production major Ryan Malone, from Wellington, Fla. Malone snagged fifth place in the College Journalist of the Year category, and is multimedia manager for Lumination Network. As for the most recent event, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Region 12 conference was held at Lipscomb University. The Lipscomb SPJ chapter and...

As you may have noticed, Lumination Network was down from late Monday evening into Late Tuesday. While we apologize for the outage, we have became aware that the fault did not lie with our staff. After many hours of scrambling, our IT team discovered the problem: The issue was that the address record (A record), a type of Domain Name System (DNS) record which lists our site’s IP address and domain name and connects the domain “luminationnetwork.com” to the server with all of the site information, was deleted yesterday. This caused our site to be inaccessible. As your main outlet for student news, Lumination Network strives to be accurate, timely and engaging. We assure that all the proper steps are being taken in order for this to not happen again. However, in the event that it does happen again, our staff is prepared to handle it. We appreciate your loyalty to our news network and your understanding during the past 24 hours. Sincerely, Kate Keith, Editor-in-Chief Hunter Patterson, Managing...

EZELL CENTER (LTV) – In a world of tweets, Facebook relationships and Myspace music, Lipscomb University is taking a cyber step forward with today’s launch of Lumination Network. But where did the name Lumination Network come from? Lipscomb’s newly revamped department of communication and journalism sponsored a contest and encouraged students to submit their ideas for the name of the news service. Jeff Daniel, a sophomore pre-pharmacy student from Chattanooga, Tenn., came up with the winning idea. “I discovered the contest late one night while checking my school email and decided to try to create a name,” said Daniel. “The idea of lumination came from a few different places. I was thinking about how we are called to be the light of the world, and also the church hymn ‘Shine Jesus Shine’ was stuck in my head that night.” Daniel said he loves seeing God move about the campus. At one point during this school year, it looked like Daniel was going to have to transfer after the spring semester, but Daniel said that God has really opened up doors to allow him to stay and be a part of the Lipscomb community. As the winner of the “Name Your News” contest, Daniel will receive a $25 iTunes gift card. The Lumination Network allows students to be up-to-date with what is going on at Lipscomb and the Nashville area. Take a minute to view some of the Senior Profiles, Singarama coverage and Mission Trip journals. Lumination Network will feature converged coverage — text, audio and video — that is a hallmark of media today. And the network has already...
