College is where students generally spend four years of their life getting an education and preparing themselves for their future careers. Some students prioritize a place where they can comfortably practice and share their beliefs alongside their academic studies at a Christian university. At Lipscomb University, students may be familiar with Dr. Larry Brown, who has taught a variety of classes in his 24 years, including both Bible and Liberal Arts courses. Brown first majored in the field of theater then followed in the footsteps of his parents, who were both teachers at one time. “It seemed natural to follow that path. I grew up in a home where education was appreciated. As an undergraduate, I decided that if I wanted to continue in the field of theater, but not go the professional route, that teaching was my best option,” Brown said. Brown grew up in Nashville and attended Lipscomb University.He received his first teaching job at York College in Nebraska in 1982. Brown’s former professor, Dr. Marlin Connelly, invited him back to Lipscomb when its previous director retired, and 1989 Brown returned to his roots. “I teach a variety of courses. For 19 years I was director of theater, and I still teach a few theater classes,” Brown says, “But also World Lit. and four different online Bible classes; mostly for the Adult Degree Program.” Although theater was his focus for quite some time, Brown always had time set aside to teach Bible. “Besides my PhD in theater,I also have a master’s in Bible,” he said. “I always intended to teach Bible along with my other subjects, as...

Thursday’s breakout chapel in Collins Alumni Auditorium honored Dr. Richard Goode as he received the Mary Morris Award of Exemplary Service to Society. The award is presented to one faculty member every year who displays a high level of service to the community and to the church. The award is named in honor of faculty member Dr. Mary Morris, who passed away due to colon cancer in 2005 at 36 years old. Dr. Morris worked alongside of an organization called Character Counts. The program has chapters in cities all across the country, and its goal is to teach all ages about having good character. Dr. Morris was able to show her love of Jesus Christ through her work with the program, as well as on international mission trips. Past recipients of the award include former student Brett Flener, AGAPE leader Tom Burton and founder of the I.C. White Stone Foundation and university graduate Kim Tucker. The award was presented by the academic director for Lipscomb University’s Institute for Law, Justice and Society, Dr. Randy Spivey. “If there was every a chapel for you to live tweet, I think this is it. Because the stories you are going to hear and the words you are going to hear today are not the kind that need to stay in this room,” Dr. Spivey said as he began the presentation. Unspoken, the new series by Campus Ministry, seeks to bring to light hidden topics or thoughts women have that because of shame are usually never talked about. This three-week series will deal with topics that women often experience with a concentration in shame and the things that women are ashamed of. The past few weeks, almost all the women’s restrooms have been decorated with pictures saying things like, “You’re not good enough,” “You’ll never be like her” or “You’re failing.” These are some of the things that are usually left unspoken, and that are going to be brought to light during the three encounters.
