Known now for his knuckleball, the pitcher that called Brentwood home for most of his life was the featured speaker at the annual Leadoff Luncheon sponsored by Jeff Forehand and the Lipscomb Bison baseball team. NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Behind record-setting pitching and timely hitting, the Lipscomb baseball team swept a doubleheader from Middle Tennessee 3-2 and 3-1 on Tuesday at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium in Nashville. Game one of the twinbill saw the Lipscomb (3-1) pitchers rack up a school record 16 strikeouts against Middle Tennessee (1-3) led by eight from junior starter Josh Cotham. The righty went five solid innings allowing only one earned run, three hits and a pair of walks. Cotham was joined in the strikeout parade by junior southpaw with a pair and fellow lefty Gil Rehwinkel (1-0), who earned the win on the bump. Rehwinkel tossed the final two and one-thirds innings and fanned six of the seven Blue Raiders he faced to pick up his first career. “When we play a doubleheader, it’s a lot of long baseball,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “Nine-inning doubleheaders are long but we need a lot of people to get in and get their innings in. We pitched it pretty good today. “Strikeouts come and we like them but it’s not necessarily how we want to pitch all the time. It just worked out in our favor. We don’t want to go for the strikeout every time. Ground balls are just as easy but the strikeout in the first game was a big part of why we got the victory.” MTSU got a run right out of the gate on a first inning homer by second baseman Jonny Thomas but Lipscomb countered right back in the third when junior centerfielder Ricky Coleman came home on a single...

NASHVILLE (Feb. 10, 2012) – Senior guard Jordan Burgason has been dismissed from the men’s basketball team for violating team rules, Lipscomb Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson announced today. The violation has also led to his dismissal from the university. “I love Jordan and wish him nothing but the absolute best,” said Hutcheson. “But he broke university rules that he knew he was breaking. We had clearly advised him, and he was aware of the consequences of making a bad decision.” A 6-foot-3 guard from Ames, Iowa, Burgason owns Lipscomb’s NCAA-era record for three-pointers with 282. This season, Burgason averaged 16.4 points and made 71 of 135 three-point shots for a 52.6 percent shooting average, making him third in the nation in this category. He led the Bison in three-point shooting, having made nine three-pointers in games against Iowa State and ETSU this season. Burgason finished with 1,132 career points and ranked No. 35 on Lipscomb’s all-time scoring list. Burgason was named the preseason No. 24 shooter in the nation by CBSSports.com. “I want to thank Lipscomb for the unbelievable opportunity that it has given me,” said Burgason. “The whole university has showed so much grace to me. But despite that, my actions have not shown a respect for the university and its policies, and for that I am sorry. I’ll never forget the memories that I’ve made here. The Lipscomb volleyball team will hang three banners in Allen Arena tonight in a ceremony during the Battle of the Boulevard event, the university’s biggest athletic rivalry game. The team’s success will be recognized when the Atlantic Sun regular and post-season banners and 2011 NCAA tournament banner are presented. Brandon Rosenthal, the team’s head coach, said he thinks the banners work as a source of motivation for the team. “I think for the girls to see the banners, to see them dropped tonight is definitely a little bit of motivation,” he said, adding that it helps the girls think of “not just your team but all of the people that came before you that helped you get to that spot.” The volleyball team has appeared in the NCAA tournament four of the last five years, and Rosenthal said it’s nice to see the girls being rewarded for their hard work. The three new banners will finish filling one side of Allen Arena, and any new banners will have to be hung on a second wall. “When we initially put them up, I was joking and said, ‘we need to leave room; we plan to win a lot more,’” Rosenthal said. “And here we are. I think there’s no doubt, our girls come in to every season and the expectations are already set.” Rosenthal said Lipscomb is focused on building a successful program, not just a winning team. “With a team, when you lose girls, or when you graduate girls, you have to rebuild,” he said. “With a program, it’s just that expectation coming in.
