SGA President Jack Weber is trying to spark some changes in the university’s alcohol policy. “I want to see if we can get a Good Samaritan policy started where, if your friend is intoxicated and you help them out, you are not liable for any punitive damages from Student Life,” Weber said. The debate around campus surrounding the alcohol policy is nothing new. Some students believe the current policy is “outdated,” and others say, “You know what you signed up for when coming to Lipscomb.” “Obviously, I think the rules were put in place for a reason,” said senior management major Ahmed Amaar.“ But, just like any policy or rule, I think that times change, and it’s always worth looking and reassessing to see if there are adjustments that need to be made.” SGA can advise changes to the alcohol policy, but ultimately, the decision is up to the university administration or board of trustees. SGA is trying to initiate a process whereby a letter of recommendation can be used to present ideas from the student body and SGA to the trustees, according to Weber. “I would love to get something like that formally, so that we can make recommendations about the alcohol policy,” Weber said. “Not necessarily say ‘Let students drink whenever they want,’ but let’s have a conversation about it.” Discussions about such changes are not without merit, according to Al Sturgeon, vice president of Student Life and dean of students. “Oh, always a possibility,” Sturgeon said.“Every spring, we review all of the code, so that is something on my radar every year. “I’m the SGA adviser,...

It’s actually here. I’m officially an alumna from Lipscomb as of Saturday, which means I’ve passed the Lumination “Editor” mantle on to a new leader. I started serving as editor the summer after my freshman year. When I got started, I remember truly not knowing what to expect, but I also remember truly being excited about what the future held. Now, Lumination Network will be getting a completely new editorial staff since Russell Vannozzi, one of our managing editors, and I have both graduated. Our second managing editor, Spencer Boehme, is a rising junior, but he will be turning to primarily focus on Lumination Radio to serve as the radio sports director. Rising junior Mckenzi Harris will be the new Editor-in-Chief, rising sophomore Kathryn Farris will be one of the managing editors and rising sophomore Erika Plunkett will also serve as a managing editor. As we passed on Lumination to this new leadership team filled with three strong women, I have written this column to offer a few words of advice and to express my gratitude for being able to serve you by bringing the news to the Lipscomb campus. Firstly, pay attention to your student news. Freedom of the press is important, no matter what scale or “level” that press is, whether it’s student news or the New York Times. All of us have a particular group of friends we hang out with. And in every group there is generally the same makeup of the types of people. However, it seems there is always a pessimist. If you know that person, or it is you, please do me a favor. Take the nearest solid object or surface, and bang his/her/your head into it thoroughly. Have a concussion yet? No, then keep going until you forget whatever it was you were complaining about. Trust me, it’s probably pointless. It is very apparent to me that we all have something to gripe and moan about. Let me tell you something – if you are reading this you’re already way more than privileged. You have access to a computer with internet, able to access this site – Lumination. Chances are you’re a student, maybe even a professor. That means you can afford tuition, get an education, shelter and a meal plan. You don’t have anything to complain about. Three billion people in the world don’t even know how to read. Here are some of the common “first world problems” I hear about day to day: “My phone isn’t working,” boy/girlfriend problems, “I can’t stand the parking here,” “This food sucks,” “I’m so poor,” “I need a new [insert luxury object here], my other one is too slow”… the list goes on.
