The fall sports teams are off to a great start this semester. Here is a recap on the games that have already been completed so far.
Volleyball
The Lipscomb volleyball team opened up the 2014 season with a 2-1 record at the Kansas Invitational.
Friday Aug. 29 started with a disappointing season opener, losing 3-1 to No. 23 Creighton. Junior Brittany Estes recored her first career triple double in the match with 12 kills, 12 digs and 10 assists. Junior Bri McCombs led Lipscomb with 19 digs. Senior Lauren Ford added 18 digs.
The big win came later that night against No. 22 Kansas. The Lady Bisons were down 2-0, but rallied back winning three sets in a row to get the 3-2 victory. The win was the first for the program over a ranked opponent. Lipscomb took set three 25-14, set four 26-24 and set five 15-12. Senior Jewell Dobson had a match-high 20 kills. Estes notched a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. McCombs recorded a match-high 20 digs.
Coach Brandon Rosenthal earned his 200th win after the Lady Bisons defeated Utah Valley 3-1 on Aug. 30. Lipscomb won the first set 25-23, third set 25-17 and fourth set 25-15. Estes had 10 kills in the match, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for the invitational. Ford recorded a match high 15 kills. McCombs led the team with 14 digs. Junior Molly Spitznagle’s hitting percentage was .562 in the match with 10 kills.
The Lady Bisons will travel to Missouri Sept. 5 for a weekend tournament in the Tiger Classic.
Men’s soccer
Men’s soccer opened up the 2014 season with a big win over Xavier at Xavier Soccer Complex on Aug. 29. Two Bisons scored their first-career goals.
With 30 seconds to go before the half, junior midfielder Anthony Cedano connected with a header for his first career goal to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead. Senior midfielder Omar Djabi assisted on the goal.
Just three minutes into the second half, redshirt junior Matt Kerridge put Lipscomb up 2-0, scoring off a pass from junior Reece Holcombe. The goal was Kerridge’s first career goal.
Xavier’s Jalen Brown scored at the 80-minute mark to cut Lipscomb’s lead 2-1. With a quick recovery from Lipscomb, Holcombe scored 17 seconds later giving the Bisons the 3-1 cushion. Brown scored again for Xavier at the 87-minute mark, but it was not enough.
Lipscomb took the season opener 3-2. The Bisons travel to Eastern Illinois on Monday Sept. 1 for a 2 p.m. match.
Women’s soccer
Women’s soccer opened up the 2014 season with a 1-2-1 record. The Lady Bisons dropped the season opener on Aug. 22 against Western Kentucky 2-0. WKU’s Lauren Moats scored both goals for the Lady Toppers.
Lipscomb bounced back in game two of the season on Aug. 24 at Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The Lady Bisons defeated Alabama A&M 7-0. Freshmen midfielder Natalie DuBoise and forward Mary-Stewart Schwarz scored their first career goals during the match. DuBoise had two goals for the day. Sophomore forward Alesondra Colbert also scored two goals for the match. Junior forward Caroline Chadwell and sophomore midfielder Jolene Muir also recorded their first goals of the season.
The two most recent games ended in overtime for the Lady Bisons. On Aug. 26 at Memphis, the game went into two overtimes, but that still was not enough time to determine a winner. Lipscomb and Memphis ended in a 0-0 tie.
Lipscomb hosted Middle Tennessee on Aug. 29. The Lady Bisons fell 2-1. MTSU scored the potential game winner in the 98th minute. Senior forward Baylee Linnell scored the only goal for Lipscomb in the 82nd minute. Grace Summers scored both goals for MTSU.
The Lady Bisons will travel to Austin Peay Sept. 1 for a 7 p.m. match.
