ADVANCE 2010 Updates!
June 17-18
We’re looking forward to having you on campus for Advance! Please check out this information. You will receive a final schedule when you arrive on campus; you can see the tentative schedule here!
To add family participants, please contact Stacey Lusk (advance@lipscomb.edu; 1-800-333-4358, ext. 5690; or 615-966-5690) as soon as possible. It is very important that we have you and your parents’ up-to-date information before you come so we can be prepared for everyone. Also, please let Mrs. Lusk know if you or your parents have dietary restrictions.
* Academics: All Advance 2010 students must be approved for admission before attending Advance. Please read the Advance Handbook online and work out 2 trial schedules for fall classes. Bringing 2 trial schedules with you to Advance will help you A LOT. You will also need to have your Lipscomb user name (Admissions sent it to you when you were accepted) and your password. You can look up your username and set your password at http://passwordreset.lipscomb.edu. (Click on Forgot Username and enter requested information.)
– Information Technology Proficiency Requirement: All new students who have fewer than 95 earned credit hours are required to take a test examining knowledge of basic computer concepts and proficiency in the elementary use of computer application software. The ITP can be taken while you are here for Advance, during QuestWeek or during fall semester (plan on two hours to complete the test). To reserve a spot to take the test at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 18, please email your full name and L# to Mrs. Becky Tallon at becky.tallon@lipscomb.edu. You will also need to register for the ITP when you register for classes on Friday morning, June 18. You can prepare for the test by following the IT Literacy link at http://cis.Lipscomb.edu.
– Foreign Language Placement Exam: To begin your language study at Lipscomb (if you want to continue to study a language that you’ve previously studied), you will need to take a placement test so we can enroll you in the course that best matches your ability. The test is given on-line at https://www.softstudy.com/store/EXAM.cfm. It only costs $10 and usually takes 15-20 minutes. Please email your score report to Dr. Charles McVey at mcveych@lipscomb.edu. (Note: Elementary Spanish is already closed for fall semester.)
– Music Theory Placement Exam: Music majors and minors and Worship Ministry majors are required to take this test before registering for classes. It will be offered on Thursday morning, June 17, from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. in room 142 of McMeen Music Center. (For more information, see http://music.Lipscomb.edu. Click on Future Students, then First Year Experience.)
– Auditions for A Cappella and University Singers will be held on Thursday morning, June 17, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Please go to the McMeen Music Lobby. Auditions will consist of (1) exercises to test your voice and range and (2) singing My Country tis of Thee.
* ID Cards: Pictures for your Lipscomb student i.d. will be made while you are here for Advance. We will give you additional information when you pick up your registration notebooks on Thursday morning. Because the lines to have your i.d. made can be long at times, we encourage you to look for opportunities throughout both Thursday and Friday to go by the Security Office when you have a break. Please take your driver’s license.
* Vehicle Registration: You can register your vehicle online when you register for classes on Friday morning. You will need your license plate number and the year, make, and model of your car. When asked to input the permit year, please select 2011.
* Residence Halls: When you arrive on campus, your first stop will probably be to check in the Elam or High Rise; they will open for Advance students at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 17. (If you are also spending Wednesday night, please see below.) All girls will be staying in Elam Hall and guys in High Rise on Thursday night, July 17. Although Advance students are required to stay on campus, we have lots of fun things planned!
– You will be asked to pay a refundable $20 key deposit when you check into the residence hall. Your check or cash will be refunded when you return your key at check-out. (We’re sorry, but we can’t refund key deposits after check-out on Friday; for the safety of our residents and future guests it is our policy to re-key the lock.)
– Residence Hall Regulations during ADVANCE: A Residence Hall Director and Resident Assistants will be staying in Elam and High Rise during Advance. They will serve as resource people if you have questions or need information. These policies will govern your stay during Advance:
– Curfew is midnight … you will need to be in your residence hall no later than midnight.
– Visitation may only occur in the main lobby of each residence hall. No one of the opposite gender may visit individual residence hall rooms.
– Alcoholic beverages and other drugs aren’t permitted on campus at any time.
– Lipscomb’s residence halls are smoke-free.
– Check-out time in the residence halls is 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 18. Please return your key and pick up your deposit at the front desk in the residence hall before 10:00 a.m. (We will be glad to store your belongings in a room until you are ready to leave campus.) We apologize for the early check-out time, but we’ll have hundreds of Impact campers arriving on campus on Friday … it’ll be exciting!
– Early Arrivals: Elam and High Rise will open at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16 for students who have made reservations to stay an extra night on campus. (It isn’t too late to reserve a place – just contact Stacey Lusk.) If you will be spending Wednesday night, please bring a little spending money. Some of our upperclassmen will meet you at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Bennett Campus Center. You all will be eating dinner, participating in a devo, and having fun … and you won’t need transportation. It’s a great way to begin meeting your fellow classmates!
* Meal Plans: If you haven’t yet chosen a meal plan, you will be registered for the Herd plan. (See the meal plans at http://campuslife.lipscomb.edu (go to Residential Life, then Meal Plans). If you need additional information or want to change your meal plan, please contact the Office of Residence Life at 615/966-6062.
* Reminders: Because the Advance program is designed to assist you in making the very best of your university experience, students must fully participate in both days of the schedule.
– Don’t forget to bring:
Your current driver’s license (or passport)
2 trial class schedules (see above)
Casual and modest clothes (mid-thigh-length shorts; no strapless tops)
Comfortable shoes
Bed linens, towels, toiletries, a pillow and an alarm clock
