Men’s basketball falls short of comeback against USC Upstate

Sophomore Nathan Moran sent Saturday afternoon’s men’s basketball game into overtime with a 92-91 loss against USC Upstate. “Nathan is a really tough kid,” head basketball coach Casey Alexander said. “You got to have a lot of positive memory to make shots like that. I will take him shooting free throws just as much as I will be confident with everyone else on our team.” Allen Arena was not only filled with Bison fans but also Star Wars fans for the annual Adoption Rally and Star Wars Day. The contest also marked the 17th meeting between the two schools with each team having claimed eight wins in the series. Lipscomb was down 30-29 at halftime. The leading scorer for the Bisons was junior J.C. Hampton, leading the Bisons with 17 points. Upstate’s leading scorer in the first half was Philip Whittington who scored 10 points. “He is a good player and he played with a lot of confidence,” Alexander said. “I believe this was his career high in scoring. We have got to guard him better.” Lipscomb did have a season-high in steals with 14, but it wasn’t enough to stop USC Upstate. The Bisons will take on NJIT in Allen Arena at 6:30 p.m. Monday. “If we do not play better we will see the same result against NJIT that we experienced with Upstate tonight,” Alexander said. “NJIT is a good team. We played with a lot of passion up there to get the win at their home court. Passion is the reason we won against NJIT. We did not have that passion in this game and it is the...

Lipscomb men’s basketball increases winning streak, sets new records

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team defeated Florida Gulf Coast University 91-75 in an Atlantic Sun Conference contest on Sunday afternoon while setting a few new NCAA-era records. The Bisons set an NCAA era school-record by scoring 19, three-pointers in the game and also set a new NCAA-era high for three-point shooting percentage by hitting 57.6 percent from deep. “We had a lot of guys contribute to this record,” head basketball coach Casey Alexander said. “Multiple players gave us a huge lift and that is what made this accomplishment possible. We want to be a team that is hard to guard on the floor and a team that is hard to guard offensively.” Lipscomb scored 51 points in the first half by shooting 62 percent from the field and 61 percent from three. Junior J.C. Hampton led the Bisons with 26 points in the game. In the first half, freshman Garrison Mathews led the Bisons in scoring with 15 points. Lipscomb finished the game with five players scoring double figures. Mathews scored 32 points in his first two conference games at home. “Garrison is playing with great confidence,” Alexander said. “He has been thrown into the fire since the very beginning of the season. He has been improving every game and learning on the fly. He is going to be a good player for us now and in the future.” The Bisons’ win broke FGCU’s seven-game winning streak and handed the Eagles their first loss in conference play this season. “I don’t think they were quite as good as they normally are on defense,” Alexander said. “I am sure Coach Dooley for Florida Gulf...

Lipscomb men’s basketball breaks eight-game losing streak

The Bisons won 92-87 in the Atlantic Sun home opener game against Stetson Thursday night in Allen Arena. With this victory, the men’s team broke an eight-game losing streak and earned its first win in conference play. “It is a huge relief to get this win,” head basketball coach Casey Alexander said. “Our guys have been working really hard, but have not seen results. I am glad we can move on and not talk about wins and losses.”   Lipscomb shot 85 percent from the free throw line and scored 34 points inside the paint. “It was critical,” Alexander said. “Free throws did not seem to mean much at the beginning of the game, but it turned out to be the difference as the game neared the end.” Freshman Garrison Mathews led the Bisons with 19 points in the game. Mathews was one of five players to score in the double figures. Juniors Nathan Moran, J.C. Hampton and George Brammeier and freshman Eli Pepper scored in the double digits as well. The Bisons will host Florida Gulf Coast in Allen Arena at 4 p.m. on Saturday. “Florida Gulf Coast is the best defensive team in the league,” Alexander said. “We are going to have to execute better offensively, but our team is excited and looking forward to play against Florida Gulf Coast.” Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

Lady Bisons basketball falls 72-60 to Ball State

The Lipscomb women’s basketball team lost to Ball State Thursday night 72-60 in Allen Arena. Sophomore Loren Cagle and senior Ashley Southern led the Bisons with 17 points each. “I thought they were both aggressive and very unselfish,” head coach Greg Brown said. “I really liked our effort and intensity. If our team plays like we did tonight, we have a chance to be pretty good this season.” The leading scorer for Ball State was Nathalie Fontaine. Fontaine scored 28 total points total for the team. “She is a tough player,” Brown said. “We knew she was their leading scorer and that is why we tried to be really physical against her as best as we could. She is a senior and played like one against us. “I think our kids responded well. Ball State is a very good team. We controlled the things we could, but our team played really well.” Lipscomb’s next opponent will be TSU at 3 p.m. Sunday at Tennessee State. Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

Lady Bisons fall 84-69 to Southeast Missouri

The Lipscomb (3-7) women’s basketball team lost to Southeast Missouri State 84-69 Tuesday night in Allen Arena. Seniors Ashley Southern and Kelli Smith led the team with points in the double digits. Both players had 12 points and led in scoring for the first half. The Lady Bisons’ were down 45-35 at the end of the first half. “They have been leaders for us all year,” head coach Greg Brown said. “They made the tough shots when we needed them in the game.” During the second half, Southern finished with 27 points total and Smith finished with 15 points. Lipscomb’s defense gave up several second-chance baskets and failed to rebound multiple three-point shots. “Defense is what hurt us tonight,” Brown said. “We had too many breakdowns and gave them too many easy opportunities on turnovers and second shots.” The Lady Bisons will take on Ball State at 5 p.m. in Allen Arena Thursday night. “I want to see growth defensively from our team,” Brown said. “We’ve got to tighten up on the defensive side of the ball. It will be a quick turnaround especially since Ball State is a very good team.” Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...
