Bisons kick off soccer season

By: Cooper Torrez The Lipscomb men’s and women’s soccer teams are ready and eager to get back on the pitch. After the long off-season and training, the coaches and players are excited about this year for many different reasons. Lady Bisons senior forward Kristen Heikkinen said, “We had a pretty tough offseason like always. During the spring, we focused a lot on our 3-4-3 formation as well as fitness. This system was new to us last year so we struggled with it some, but I think it could make us really dangerous this year if we play it right.” With the Lady Bisons returning 12 players, it gives players like senior Meghan McGuire, a good feeling about the upcoming season. “Our team chemistry has been amazing from the beginning of preseason,” said McGuire. “Mixing 9 newcomers and 12 returners could’ve been a problem but doing different team activities has helped with our team chemistry both on and off the field.” Heikkinen said returning players could be a huge factor in the Lady Bisons successful season. “Returning players who have started off well include, Kameron Stillwell, Jenna Price, Meghan McGuire, Martika Powe, Katie Wood and Danielle Bethke. All of these girls have been crucial parts of our offense and will continue to be for the season.” Freshman newcomer Brittany Rupple has come in and done a great job at the center back position and could be a player to watch out for to add depth and speed in the midfield. When asked what the team goal is for the season, the answer was the same. “Our main goal and focus...

SGA hosts concert to benefit university writing center

On Wednesday, April 20th at 8 p.m,  SGA will be sponsoring a concert in Shamblin Theater to benefit the writing center. Daniel and the Lion, a band from Wisconsin, is the opening act, stopping in for their second of three trips on their Fall 2011 tour. The main act, John Paul Roney in the Boom Forest, is self-described as “Beach Boys meet Depeche Mode.” “The event is a benefit concert for the writing center, not just to raise funds for the program but also to raise awareness of what they do,” said Ale Dalton, event coordinator. “A lot of people have this misconception that the writing center is a remedial service for students who don’t like writing.” That is not the case, however. Students shouldn’t feel the need to utilize the writing center only because they produce low-quality papers. It’s actually the opposite of that. “The truth is that some of the best students on campus go to the writing center to better their work,” Dalton said. “The students who serve as writing consultants are some of the brightest people I’ve met on campus and they’re genuinely passionate about helping students better their work. The actual writing center is like a lounge instead of a classroom, comfy couches are everywhere and it’s a really neat place.” This event is not about the writing, though. It is about getting the word out about the Writing Center and hearing some good music as well. “It’s going to be an incredible event full of good music and good fun, so come out for a night of good music with your friends,” Dalton...

Nickelodeon to go ‘old school’ this fall

The 90‘s was a decade that was popularized by things such as new technology, overrated boy bands, Britney Spears and Furbys. But no one can forget the TV shows that popularized the 90’s and the television network, Nickelodeon, hans’t forgotten them either. According to Entertainment Weekly and numerous other sources, Nickelodeon will be airing classic shows from the 90s, starting in the fall, from midnight to 2 a.m. The list includes the popular shows “Rugrats,” “Kenan and Kel,” “The Adventures of Pete and Pete,” “Clarissa Explains It All,” “The Amanda Bynes Show” and “All That.” This announcement excites some Lipscomb students and freshman Elise Haltermann. “My cousin and I used to watch ‘Clarissa Explains It All’,” Halterman said. “Bringing back the show would bring back great memories of when I was a child.” In an interview with EW, Keith Dawkins, senior VP and general manager of TeenNick said, “It was ground-breaking and for the young viewers, a powerful and pivotal time in their lives. Those kids who are now 22, 23 and 24 want to bring that back.” The whole campaign was started by a Facebook fan page. Users started groups to support their old favorite shows. This gave Dawkins and the network the idea to ultimately bring them back. Junior Carter Hamric finds that some old cartoons relate to his life. “Watching Rugrats, I was always so confused as to why Tommy was bowlegged, and Angelica always reminded me of my sister,” Hamric said. “So I am excited to be able to relive those memories through the show.” While watching television we are able to connect with characters...

Bisons fall to Tennessee 7-3

An hour and a half rain delay hindered the Bisons and Vols’ start time, but fans didn’t shy away. The Vols came into the game 16-4 while the Bisons were 7-13. Chris Nunn got the call for the Bisons and had a solid first inning. However, in the top of the second Tyler Horne got the Vols rolling with a two-run homerun deep over the left center field wall. The Bisons stormed back in the bottom of the second and the third. Josh Chism singled to right field followed by a Tennyson Dodd double. Logan Hostettler’s sacrifice fly scored Chism to bring the score to 2-1 Vols. In the bottom of the third M.L. Williams’ grounder scored T.J. Hoelzer to tie it up 2-2. The Vols got the bats rolling and in a three-inning stretch never looked back. In the top of the fifth a double by Ethan Bennett scored Matt Duffy to put the Vols up 3-2. A Davis Morgan single then scored Bennett to make the score 4-2. Khayyan Norfork then scored Morgan to extend the Vols lead to 5-2. In the top of the sixth Josh Liles then extended the Vols lead to 6-2 when he doubled and brought home Duffy. Morgan continued his good play and singled in the top of the seventh and was sent home by Norfolk two batters later to put the Vols up 7-2. The Bisons threatened but could not capitalize. The Bisons scored the game’s last run in the bottom of the seventh when Hostettler scored Dodd to bring the Bisons within four runs. However, the Vols pitcher Matt Ramsey...

Softball team set for home opener

The Lady Bisons return to Draper Diamond on Friday for the first time since last season. They will face off against Butler to kick off the Lady Bison Classic. The Lady Bisons come in to the game after playing in the Georgia Tournament and the UAB Tournament. Compiling a 5-8 record in the two tournaments, the Lady Bisons look to get back on track. Whitney Kiihnl plans on using her leadership to help the Lady Bisons throughout the season and this weekend. “I hope the other girls see me as a leader, in that they see me more as a spiritual leader,” Kiinhl said. “God allowed me to be a part of the Lipscomb softball team for a reason, and so hopefully I am doing God’s will by being a good influence on my teammates.” “I just try to tell the younger girls to be confident and believe in themselves. I’ve learned that the mental game is a huge part of playing at the college level. Believing in yourself can go a long way.” As far as the Lady Bison Classic goes, Kiinhl says it’s simple and it will be good to play at home. “I like playing at home because it’s just a comforting feeling,” Kiinhl said. “We’re used to the training room, the locker room and the field. I enjoy seeing my friends and all our supporters at the games. “We just have to show up to play. Offensively and defensively,  we have to be prepared and on our A-game.” Kiihnl’s goal for the season may be different than most teams or players, but she is sure...
