Thursday night, a mixed crowd of Lipscomb students and those from around the Nashville community got a taste of a locally-spun variety show hosted by campus’ own Dr. Lee C. Camp. Tokens, described by Camp as a “theological variety show,” brought its newest broadcast to Alumni Auditorium, taking on a potentially uncomfortable-yet-always eye-opening subject with “The Birds and the Bees and Loving Thee”. The new recording was a bold, high-spirited celebration one of Christianity’s most ‘hush-hush’ topics. Unafraid to reach deep into the Bible to share some of the “post-Sunday School” offerings (i.e. Song of Solomon), Camp used the show to take an awkward subject and make it light, funny and most importantly, discussable. Not only did this episode of Tokens offer some of Nashville’s finest musicians and storytellers a platform to share their talent, but the audience was given enlightening insight into the true meaning behind a few noted passages and their true intent: to shed a light on our longing for God’s love. Camp kicked off the show and appeared periodically as the event’s emcee. The host and his sidekick and leader of the house band (The Most Outstanding Horeb Mountain Boys) Jeff Taylor, provided snarky and well-supported banter throughout the program. Some of Camp’s ‘fact-sharing’ segments had audience members gleefully cringing. The great harmonica player Buddy Greene joined the band for the evening’s show. Starting the night off right was the duo of Sugar + the Hi-Lows, a folk rock team. On Wednesday night, Lipscomb became a part of the Metro@50 celebration by holding a panel discussion entitled “A Look at Nashville’s Neighborhood Associations…Then & Now” that took a look at the history of neighborhood associations in Music City. The celebration marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Metro Charter that featured the citizens of Davidson County teaming up with the City of Nashville to create the nation’s first unified government. The historic charter was passed in 1962. The event, hosted by the Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership, drew a large crowd and featured esteemed panelists from across the city, including former Mayor Bill Purcell, Ben Freeland of Freeland Chevrolet and current Davidson County Clerk Brenda Wynn. Mayor Karl Dean offered the evening’s closing thoughts. Chairman emeritus of The Tennessean and founder of the First Amendment Center John Seigenthaler served as the evening’s moderator. The first panel discussed the history of Nashville’s neighborhood associations. Reverend William Barnes, founding pastor of the Edgehill United Methodist Church, interim director of the Transportation Licensing Commission for Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County Billy Fields, former Metro councilwoman Betty Nixon, former Mayor Purcell and Mrs. Wynn all gave their insight into the history of neighborhood associations over the past 50 years and their individual work to help pioneer the way for Nashville to have the strong neighborhood system. “These were the pioneers that made this community,” Seigenthaler said about those involved in neighborhood development in Nashville. A packed house rocked out to free music for a great cause in Allen Arena Tuesday night as country music legend Charlie Daniels and a host of others headlined the annual ioStudio Charlie Daniels’ Scholarship for Heroes Tour. In its fourth year, the show, always led by Daniels, helps benefit the Yellow Ribbon initiative, a program that pledges to help post-9/11 GI Bill veterans receive an education with little-to-no cost at Lipscomb University. This year, there are around 200 Yellow Ribbon students that attend school. Alongside Daniels, The Grascals, Chris Young, Keni Thomas, Bleach and surprise guest Jason Aldean all played a mix of current hits and classics in order to give the Yellow Ribbon students in attendance an exciting night to remember. Before the show, Daniels met with the Yellow Ribbon students and posed in a group picture. Daniels said that the veterans are brave individuals who endure daily strife all for the ultimate aim of receiving an education. “It takes something that a lot of people don’t have to get out of a bed, to turn off the pain medicine and to walk into a situation where you’re trying to better yourself,” Daniels said. “Just the act of getting out of bed every day is a bigger job than most of us can ever even imagine.” To Daniels, the Yellow Ribbon students – and all those who serve in the military – may have different stories, but all deserve to be recognized in the highest regard for their service to the country. “Everybody’s story is different, but everybody’s got one, and everybody has really struggled to be...

Looking to build on Thursday night’s win over the University of Jacksonville, the men’s basketball team turned in a valiant effort at home Saturday night against the University of North Florida Ospreys (13-18, 8-10 in conference), but effort wasn’t enough to take the win. The team fell to the visitors 85-78 in a game that solidified the Bisons’ bracket seating for the Atlantic-Sun tournament. After a strong start by Lipscomb (leading by six at 14:55), North Florida fought their way back to make it a close first half. That is, until the last three minutes, where the Bisons went on a run, widening the margin to seven at the half. The second half saw more strong play from Lipscomb, holding a 10-point lead with a little more than 10 remaining. Unfortunately, the Ospreys once again chipped away at the lead, eventually taking the top score at 3:30. After this, the game became a back-and-forth of jumpers, layups and free-throws, with the Ospreys hitting key shots at moments, and the Bisons missing when it counted. North Florida walked away from Allen Arena with the win. The Bisons end their regular season 12-17 (7-11 in the A-Sun). Senior Deonte Alexander, who was honored at half court before the game for Senior Night, led the Bisons in scoring with 19, while redshirt sophomore Carter Sanderson added in 16 points. Junior Khion Sankey led the team in rebounds with nine and had 12 points on the night. With only two games remaining in the regular season, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team was looking to enter the Atlantic-Sun Tournament with two strong home wins. Thursday night, the Bisons accomplished part of that task. Lipscomb defeated the University of Jacksonville Dolphins (14-16) 77-73, which evens the teams out at 1-1 (with the Dolphins winning the first match-up of the season). After a strong start by Lipscomb (the Bisons were up 17-6 by 14:10), the Dolphins inched their way back at the game, gaining their first lead at 5:49. The Bisons entered into halftime with a slim 36-35 lead. In the second half, the two teams went back and forth for the lead, with the Bisons taking the final lead at 8:36. Lipscomb fought off a close margin towards the half’s close to walk away with the conference win. Sophomore Martin Smith led the Bisons in scoring with 24. Freshman Stephen Hurt followed with 20 points, and led the team in rebounds with nine. Junior Khion Sankey added 12 points and eight rebounds. Smith said he believes that the victory over the Dolphins will help come next week’s trip to Macon, Ga., to take part in the A-Sun tournament. “It’s a big win for us going into the conference tournament, “ Smith said. “This is a little confidence booster for us.” Smith said he hopes the team’s second-half play can be carried over to Saturday night’s final season game against North Florida.
