The Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team fell short of claiming the 131st Battle of the Boulevard in an 89-60 loss to the Belmont Bruins. Senior Deonte Alexander led the Bisons in scoring with 14 points (including four 3-pointers). Junior Khion Sankey led the team in rebounds and assists with 7 and 4 respectively, while gaining 11 points of his own. Alexander said that he feels the team is going to need to fix tonight’s mistakes going into the rest of the season. “We’ve got to get back to the drawing board tomorrow. They beat us on a lot of the things we’ve been practicing on,” Alexander said. “We turned the ball over a lot tonight, and we’ve just got to take care of the ball and play solid defense.” Alexander thanked the fans for their attendance of tonight’s game and asked for their continued support throughout the season. Redshirt sophomore Carter Sanderson, who had 13 points on the night, also noted his appreciation to the fans, expressing the importance of the crowd’s energy. “I really appreciate all the support. It was a great crowd,” Sanderson said. “I thought they were energized and loud, and we fed off them a lot.” The Bisons will play the final “Boulevard” game of the season against the Bruins on Dec. 4 at Belmont. President Barack Obama has been re-elected to a second term in office after months of campaigning, defeating his Republican opponent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney in a close election. After winning in important swing states like Ohio, Wisconsin and Colorado, the president passed the 270 Electoral College vote mark that would confirm his re-election. Obama also carried Electoral College vote-heavy states like California, New York and Pennsylvania. Obama also surprised the nation by claiming toss-up state Virginia. Florida also leans in the president’s direction, with votes still being tallied as of this morning. Romney won by a large margin in Tennessee (although Obama carried Davidson County), alongside states like Texas, North Carolina, Georgia and Indiana. President Obama also led the popular vote. In his concession speech, Gov. Romney congratulated the president and wished him well in the years ahead. “This is a time of great challenges for America, and I pray that the president will be successful in guiding our nation,” Romney said. Romney also used his final address as a presidential candidate to lament his wishes to the future of the nation. “The nation, as you know, is at a critical point. At a time like this, we can’t risk partisan bickering and political posturing,” Romney said. “Our leaders have to reach across the aisle to do the people’s work. And we citizens also have to rise to the occasion.” In his acceptance speech, President Obama thanked his supporters for their efforts that secured his re-election. Election day is upon us, and students around campus are abuzz with political fervor as President Barack Obama and former governor Mitt Romney battle to win the presidential election. While Tennessee is poised to give its Electoral College votes to Romney, such key swing states as Ohio, Florida, Colorado, Virginia, Iowa, New Hampshire and Wisconsin remain up in the air for both candidates. Freshmen Cole Meador believes that Mitt Romney has the edge in tonight’s turnout. “I think that Romney will win,” Meador said. Sophomore August Nelson believes that the election will come down to the turnout in Ohio. “I think it’s too close to call right now,” Nelson said. “I think we’ll find out at the end of the night once we know how Ohio votes.” Rasmussen Reports have Romney with a slight 49-48 lead over Obama in the national poll, while a CNN poll puts the two even with each other at 49. CNN also reports that an ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll puts the Obama ahead in the race 49-48. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll has Obama ahead at 48-47. Politico/George Washington University’s survey has the candidates tied at 48. The Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team played their only exhibition game of the season on Thursday against Freed Hardeman, defeating the Lions 99-84 in a match-up that served as a preview for the upcoming season. This was the 99th meeting between the Lipscomb and Freed Hardeman men’s basketball teams. Former NAIA rivals, the Bisons now lead the Lions 76-23 in the series. The Bisons have played the Lions in an exhibition game every year since entering the NCAA (excluding the 2010-2011 season). Redshirt freshmen center Stephen Hurt led the Bisons in scoring and rebounds with 21 points and 12 rebounds. He also had two assists and was six for seven on free-throws. Hurt believes that the Bisons were dominant on the offensive side of the ball. “I thought we played a really good game offensively. We’ve been working on our offense since we started practice. I think it’s working really good.” Hurt said. Hurt also believes that the team still has plenty of room to grow as the season progresses. “Defensively, we’ve got a lot to fix, but I think, you know, it’s the first game of the season and we can’t expect too much,” Hurt said. “It will come together as the season goes along.” Junior center Oscar Garcia scored the first two points of the game and led the team in assists with 4. Senior Deonte Alexander followed Hunt in scoring with 17 points. Sophomore forwards Malcom and Martin Smith both had 11 points, as did freshmen guard J.C. Before I get 500 negative comments based on this review, let me add this important disclaimer. Kevin James’ newest comedy, “Here Comes the Boom,” is a flawed product. It’s ridden with inspiring clichés and could have used about twenty minutes cut out of its 105 minute run-time. It’s also one of the sweetest, down-to-earth comedies I’ve seen in a good while. “Here Comes the Boom” allows the likeable James to really hone in his, well, likeable personality, saddled with a half-way decent script filled with workable comedy and “that’s nice” greeting card heart. The film is also timely, making fairly accurate complaints against the current state of the public education system. Social commentary with effective humor? In a Kevin James movie, nonetheless? Strange times, indeed. After the budget of a Boston high school undergoes massive cuts, the music department led by Henry Winkler’s committed Marty, ends up falling to the wayside in favor of other extracurricular activities. James’ apathetic biology teacher Scott Voss, a friend of Marty, decides to save his pal’s job by entering into the ring of mixed martial arts. (He was a top wrestler in college, now, not so much). Teaming up with Marty and UFC fighter Bas Rutten’s Niko, Voss puts on the spandex and gloves in order to fight his way to somewhere around $38,000 dollars (the amount needed to keep Marty at the composer’s stand). I was skeptical about the prospects of this film simply due to the fact that Kevin James isn’t usually in that great of a movie.
