Women’s hoops takes loss to Stetson

The Lipscomb women’s basketball team lost 83-62 against the Stetson Hatters Monday night in Allen Arena. The Purple and Gold fell short and were unable to keep up momentum after a short lead in the first half. Although the Bisons came up short against the Hatters, head coach Greg Brown said he saw improvement since the last few games. “The intensity and execution was good, but closer to the end we got sloppy and they punished us for that,” Brown said. “They are a good team so the margin of error is really slim.” Freshman Morgan Turner set her career high of 13 points after getting more time on the court due to other team injuries. “After Christmas you hope to see the freshman become sophomores a little bit,” Brown said. “She’s [Turner] a talented player and we are excited to see her relaxing and be able to play like that.” The Lady Bisons saw two other players score in the double digits when junior Alex Banks lead Lipscomb with 20 points and six rebounds alongside sophomore Amber Fuqua who scored 12 points and four rebounds. “Alex [Banks] played a solid game — she is physical and can shoot those three’s for us,” Brown said. “She is versatile enough that she can play on the perimeter and play inside and against some of our teams — it gives us a great match up.” Although Lipscomb was without leading scorer and rebounder senior Ashley Southern and sophomore Loren Cagle, the Lady Bisons are using this time to improve in other aspects of the team until Southern and Cagle are able...

Men’s tennis opens spring season with loss to Vandy

After a weeks training on and off the court, Lipscomb men’s tennis team opened its spring season, losing the matchups against the Vanderbilt Commodores Saturday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center. The way the Bisons fought through the singles and doubles matches was exactly what coach Mario Hernandez said he was hoping for. “We went in to make the Commodores play and I think we did a great job — the boys tried to play their game but it came down to execution,” Hernandez said. The Bisons put up a fight from start to finish with heavy balls and smart play against the Commodores. “Vanderbilt is a very tough and well coached team, which showed tremendously in the doubles,” said John Tougher, senior and team captain. “We knew going into it that we were in a win or learn situation, and we had nothing to lose.” The overall score was 4-0. Sophomores Alejandro Manzanares, Thais Minet and Philippe Courteau lost their singles matches. Junior Rob Mitchell and sophomore Daniel Cardenas weren’t able to finish their singles matches. Three doubles teams played, finishing 6-2, 6-2 and 4-5. Despite the loss, Hernandez said he has high hopes for the team as they start thinking about their next game against Murray State. “Our ultimate goal is that we can use our strengths effectively and execute them in the right way,” Hernandez said. “Leading up to the Murray State match we have to put in some extra work on footwork and sharpen up our games as a whole, but I believe we are on the right path.” Lipscomb has a full roster carrying on from the fall semester,...

Coach Jim White shares importance of patience at 2015 Don Meyer Evening of Excellence

Lipscomb University held its Don Meyer Evening of Excellence Saturday night to recognize the journey of coach Jim White, who is the subject of the Disney movie McFarland USA. The Don Meyer Evening of Excellence is named after the legendary former Lipscomb basketball coach who passed away in May of 2014 after a battle to cancer. Meyer coached at Hamline University for three years, Lipscomb for 24 years and Northern State for 11 years and finished with a career record of 923-324 in 38 seasons. Over the last six years, Lipscomb has had speakers that include Coach Meyer, former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens, Phil, Si and Kay Robertson from Duck Dynasty and “Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks. The evening in Allen Arena was filled with Lipscomb donors, athletes and family of the soon-to-be graduated seniors. White coached McFarland High School to nine cross country state championships in 14 years. Most of White’s runners were the children of immigrant field workers, as McFarland is one of the poorest cities in California. White shared some advice of his well-rounded programs with Lipscomb’s athletes. “No one can tell you that you won’t achieve something, because I just turned around and did it anyway,” White said. “You must continue to do right the things that you know how, and be patient. It’s a process — it cannot be built over night. “You have to have that drive in all aspects of life and especially for the student athletes who continue to work hard on and off the field.” Lipscomb alum Keith Hayes was impressed by the work put...

Lipscomb baseball drops first home series since 2013

Despite defeating the No. 1 team in the nation last week, the Lipscomb baseball team came up short losing the series to the University of North Florida this weekend at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The Bisons lost the first game of the series 4-3. They took the second game 11-3, but lost the final game Sunday 8-0. “I have to give credit to North Florida as they showed all weekend that they could hit,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. “They made it very difficult for us and in the end we didn’t get the job done.” Forehand went on to talk about the outstanding pitching performance by UNF. “When a team pitches that well and makes great runs it’s difficult to get into the game. If we don’t get a run through, we can’t really play the game.” This is the first home series Lipscomb has dropped since the weekend of April 26, 2013 when Stetson came in and took 2-of-3. North Florida senior Trent Higginbothem, gave the Ospreys the initial lead hitting his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot in the third inning. UNF pitcher Matt Vaka allowed only a couple of hits and three walks in five innings, in the final stage of the series. Throughout the whole afternoon, Vaka only allowed three runners to move into scoring position, which lowered his ERA to 1.72 for the season. The only chance the Bisons gave themselves to score was in the sixth inning when Josh Lee lead by drawing a one-out walk to give Lipscomb a scoring opportunity. Following the walk, Allan Hooker almost tied it...

Students anticipate opening of health-conscious chain Au Bon Pain

After six months of construction, students are able to see major development of the Au Bon Pain cafe located in the Student Activities Center. This healthy sandwich and pastries shop was first set to open in fall 2014, but due to changed plans and measures required by the Metro Codes Department, the opening date was delayed to spring 2015. Walls and lighting fixtures have been put into place in addition to a new door that will lead to an outdoor patio. With changes being made rapidly, Au Bon Pain could open its doors to students after spring break. “The most important part of our service is that we hope to satisfy the needs of all the students, and we are excited to get Au Bon Pain up and running,” said Elizabeth Coburn, VP International Franchise Operator for Au Bon Pain. An employee in the SAC, junior Melissa Kromer, said that despite the setbacks most students are looking forward to seeing the completed space. “Everyone is excited to see what the new cafe will have to offer,” Kromer said. “Since the area used to be used mainly as an additional work out space, students have been eager at the time that has been spent constructing this building.” For the health-conscious gym-goers and the occasional night class student, Coburn said that the restaurant’s food will be satisfactory for everyone. “Since it is in the SAC we will have lots of food to choose from,” Coburn said. “We will have healthy options and other options. There will be ready made sandwiches but also sandwiches and salads that the students will be able create from scratch.” Along with sandwiches and...
