Lipscomb student Phillip Jones was just playing around with Adobe Illustrator to make himself a T-shirt design when he simultaneously crafted the graphic for the newly-found element 117 Tennessine, named after Tennessee. The sophomore mechanical engineering major was invited to attend the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s recognition of the discovery and naming of the element today because of his contribution. Jones said he didn’t anticipate his design being chosen as the official graphic for the element since he originally just made it for himself to put on a T-shirt, and there wasn’t a call or competition for the element’s graphic. “When they named it [Tennessine], I thought it would be really cool to have a shirt with the design of the element — just a basic symbol and then have colors of the Tennessee flag on it,” Jones said. “I designed one draft, and then another, until I was satisfied with the colors and the border I wanted and everything like that.” After he finished his design, Jones said he had the idea to send it ORNL’s Public Relations director to see what would happen. “I didn’t really even expect a response,” Jones noted, “but a few days later, I got a response back from the same person saying that they were really interested and excited, and they would like to use it.” Jones said he didn’t even get to the T-shirt part of his project, but after he gave the ORNL permission to use his design, they offered to give him free T-shirts, pins and other items the design will be printed on. “It’s not an extremely complex design,...

With an all-star cast and several hit songs, SING is exactly what you’d expect from an average musical — shining in musical numbers, lacking in an original story. The story revolves around Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) — an optimistic, sometimes annoying Koala who fell in love with musical theater at a young age — and his theater, which is not doing as hot as it once did back in its glory days when young Nana Noodleman (Jennifer Hudson) was still performing. However, Moon comes up with a surefire plan to revive his theater — a singing competition (basically American Idol with animals). Contestants pour in for auditions in hopes to get their hands on some of the prize money, but he narrows it down to the lucky few: Rosita (Reese Witherspoon) — the housewife pig who is currently just using her voice for lullabies to her many piglets, Mike (Seth McFarlane) — a jazzy mouse who’s down on his luck, Ash (Scarlett Johansson) — the husky-voiced, better half of a hard rock, porcupine duo, Gunter (Nick Kroll) — Rosita’s entertaining, disco-loving partner and Johnny (Taron Egerton) a young, misunderstood gorilla with a natural talent for crooning. Meena (Tori Kelly), a shy elephant with some powerful vocals, also eventually makes her way into the production. This summer, Illumination proved its worth outside of the Despicable Me universe with the highly enjoyable, The Secret Life of Pets. Noting the all-star cast and hit songs in SING’s amusing trailer and recalling the entertaining action from Secret Life, I likely went in with too high of expectations. SING doesn’t quite reach its potential and falls...

Lipscomb recognized its graduates and commemorated its 125th anniversary at the 2016 December graduation on Saturday afternoon in Allen Arena. In addition to the typical parts of graduation such as the awarding of diplomas, the singing of the alma mater and the Tolling of the Bell, a special guest speaker — David Lipscomb himself — showed up to help observe the monumental anniversary. “This is a very special graduation, as we’re recognizing a special year in our history at Lipscomb,” Provost Craig Bledsoe noted before university president Randy Lowry introduced David Lipscomb to the crowd. “A number of months ago, we had Founders Day on our campus, and one of the amazing things that happened is David Lipscomb reappeared,” Lowry said. “Now this doesn’t always happen after 125 years, but we are so appreciative that it has happened again today. We have a moment as we celebrate this milestone in the university’s history to hear from our founder.” Those present at the ceremony then took a few steps back in time to 1891 — the year David Lipscomb and James A. Harding founded the university. David Lipscomb, portrayed by Henry “Chip” Arnold, was welcomed to the stage to share some of his wisdom with the graduates. “We started in downtown Nashville in a small building with a faculty of four and a handful of students — around 12,” Lipscomb said. It reminds me of the parable of the mustard seed. We started out with humble beginnings in 1891 . . . and as that mustard seed grew, it became a great tree in the garden, and it attracted all kinds of people. And...
