The Student Government Association Presidential Debate is set for Monday, April 6 at 5 p.m. in Shamblin Theater. Elections will be held on Tuesday, April 7 in Bennett Campus Center. Students will be able to vote for executive positions and senators from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Runoffs will be held Thursday, April 9. Students will only be able to vote for the senators in their class. Five senators are chosen for each class. Elections for Senator-at-large will be held Tuesday, April 14. Several Lipscomb journalism students took away 2015 Tennessee AP college journalism awards at the John Seigenthaler Center on Saturday. Lipscomb received nine awards in the competition. While most students were away for spring break the inside of Au Bon Pain began taking form as employee training started. Lipscomb dining manager Wolcott Fary said Au Bon Pain will have two opening dates — an opening for staff to begin training and the grand opening, which will take place Tuesday, March 31 following Chapel. The new cafe and bakery located in the Student Activities Center will open on limited hours of operation Monday, March 23. The Lipscomb baseball team swept the games against Quinnipiac this weekend at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. Though the weekend got off to a rainy start, the Bisons won 5-0 in Friday night’s game. The Bisons brought their record 10-5 Saturday night when they won 9-4. As the rain cleared Sunday, the Bisons took a 3-1 victory. In Friday’s rainy matchup, neither team scored until the fifth inning, where the Bisons took the lead with two runs. Senior pitcher Ian Martinez-McGraw allowed only three hits from the Bobcats in eight scoreless frames. Freshman center fielder Michael Gigliotti made a leadoff double into left field just before running home to score in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, the Bisons evened out the score with two insurance tallies. Lipscomb scored five runs in Friday’s matchup, marking the first time the Bisons have won without scoring seven runs this season. The Bisons returned to the diamond Saturday afternoon, where the Quinnipiac Bobcats took the lead with runs in the second and third innings. But Lipscomb responded with a two-run frame in the home half of the third. To get the Bisons’s offense started, senior second baseman Mike Korte and junior first baseman Adam Lee scored back-to-back solo home runs. Lipscomb took its first lead in the fourth inning after senior left fielder Jonathan Allison drew a lead-off walk. In the bottom of the fifth the Bobcats created a small rally after Mike Palladino knocked a two-out single to right. The Bisons responded taking the lead with a four-run frame. It was a dark and rainy day on campus, but smiles and cheers lit up Allen Arena during the Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament Friday evening. The basketball games that continued into Saturday night marked Lipscomb’s 11th year of hosting the tournament. The special bond between Lipscomb athletes and the Special Olympics athletes make the teaming of the tournament and the university a natural fit. “There is a competitive rivalry, but there is also much more support of fellow athletes no matter what team they’re on,” said Lin Garner, Lipscomb’s Associate Athletic Director for Academics. A spotlight was put on the athletic camaraderie at the opening ceremonies, where Lipscomb athletes joined the Special Olympics athletes to cheer them on before they stepped on court. Terry Watkins, Special Olympics Director for Area 1 Nashville, said that in that short time of fellowship, the Special Olympics athletes made connections with the college athletes. “Love is love,” Watkins said. “You can love a sport, whether you’re really good at it or not. “College athletes are generally good at sports. There are some of our [athletes] that may not be, but they still have that love — that common love of sports that comes together when we do things like this.” Watkins, who also teaches Special Education at Nashville’s Glencliff High School, is a veteran of three decades as a Special Olympics coach.
