April Fool’s Day usually calls for a plethora of pranks and jokes. Lipscomb’s annual talent show, entitled Shenanigans, was no joke, though. Held in Shamblin Theatre on Tuesday evening, this free event showcased a variety of students’ talents, ranging from singer-songwriters to dancers. The event was hosted by Kappa Iota Theta and sponsored by SGA. President of Kappa Iota Theta and junior Mariah Lester served as the evening’s emcee. To Lester, the talent show is important to bring more community to Lipscomb. “We hope the talent will bring more of a student engagement for the whole student body,” Lester said. “It’s open to all students, all majors, anyone can participate, and anyone can come. “We open it up to the whole Lipscomb community to support and experience. It’s our job to showcase the students. This is our family. Look what they can do.” Before the show’s intermission, duo sophomore Cedric Duncan and sophomore Samantha Seifert performed the Rihanna and Mikky Ekko song “Stay.” “When I get on stage, all my nerves go away,” Duncan said.“Just like last year, it’s a lot of good competition this year.” The first and second place winners, who received a $100 and $50 prize respectively, were freshmen Rodra Allen, who sang a cover song, and Anna Bray, who performed an Irish dance. “I was super nervous; my hands were so shaky,” Allen said. “I was going to snap my fingers, but I couldn’t even do that.” Allen says she plans to put her prize to good use. “Me and my friends are going on a road trip, and before, I was kind of wondering...

Graduate film and creative media students joined professionals from Town Square Pictures on the production of The Secret Handshake in the Ezell Center Thursday. The upcoming family comedy stars Kevin Sorbo (Andromeda) and was written and directed by Howie Klausner (Space Cowboys). The production is being filmed on Lipscomb’s campus along with several other locations in Nashville. Graduate students in Lipscomb’s Film and Creative Media Program gained hands-on experience and insight to the field by working with crews from Town Square Pictures. Graduate student Wes Speight joined the electric crew during production in Ezell. “I’ve learned more than I could possibly learn in a classroom,” Speight said. “I’ve learned a great deal about lighting and how that works. Also, how they communicate with other departments and how the director communicates with them.” Because Speight hopes to one day become a director, the hands-on experience he gained from this experience will help him build his career in directing. “I think it’s good to have a general knowledge of how it all works, and I think I’ve gained that by being here and simply just observing,” Speight said. Lipscomb theater majors Abigail Minor and Sydni Hayes joined the set as extras. “We had to audition for this part,” Minor said. “It was a really fun experience, and it was pretty awesome to meet Kevin.” Not only did filming some of the production at Lipscomb benefit film graduate students and theater majors, but it also brought lead actor Sorbo back to his college days. “I’m a college guy, so coming to Lipscomb really brought me back to my college days,” Sorbo said....

Although the weather kept some students from class, it did not keep them from attending Monday’s SGA Spring Concert featuring Judah & the Lion in Shamblin Theater. To get the evening started, Footlight Parade, Lipscomb’s own indie-folk trio, opened the show with a few cover songs and a few songs of their own. After the opening band performed, students waited in anticipation for Judah & the Lion to come on stage. Judah & the Lion, an Americana-folk band based out of Nashville, got started in December of 2011. Because the band’s lead guitarist and vocalist, Judah Akers, was a Belmont student, some students had previously heard of the band. “My sister goes to Belmont, so she’s friends with them,” said freshman Mandy Durose. Judah and the Lion performed a few crowd favorites such as “After All” and “Sweet Tennessee” while incorporating a few new songs. The open space in Shamblin encouraged students to clap along, stomp their feet and even dance. “In Alumni, everyone is sitting down, but in Shamblin everyone is up – up on the floor, dancing,” said senior Kelli Blackshear, SGA’s social committee chair. SGA had high hopes of bringing in not only more Lipscomb students to the spring concert this year but also non-Lipscomb students. SGA also concluded that having the spring concert in Shamblin, instead of Collins Alumni Auditorium, changed the outcome of the concert. “It’s a more intimate environment in Shamblin,” said Brandon Carver, senior SGA member. Update: Water returned to Fanning Hall late last night (estimated around 3:30 a.m. or so), but a temporary shutdown is expected today as further repairs are expected. Below is an email sent to hall residents by Sain. “Our amazing facilities team just left our building at 3:30am this morning. The broken pipe fixture has been temporarily fixed and will be permanently fixed tomorrow when the proper parts can be located. In order for the repair to made tomorrow the water will have to be turned off for a short time. Please be patient as the repairs are made and more than anything please thank our facilities workers, Sam and Chad for temporary fix so that we can have water. I am so sorry for the disruption in our evening with this issue and appreciate your great attitudes.” Previous story below. Residents of Fanning Hall will be without running water for the meantime after a pipe burst in a suite. “Tonight we had a pipe burst in the bathroom on the third floor in suite 307 around 11pm,” Fanning RHD Laurie Sain wrote in an email to dorm residents. “In order to stop the water from flooding any more suites, the water to the entire building had to be turned off,” Sain wrote. The pipes sent water down the staircase and into the courtyard. A dorm-wide evacuation did not occur, but the residents in suite 207 are residing in the RA’s suite for the night. The water in the entire building has been shut off as of now to avoid flooding in anymore suites. “The plumber is on his way to assess the pipe and hopefully fix it...
