Men’s soccer defeats Memphis in thrilling 4-3 victory

In a matchup that featured two teams with only one loss apiece so far in 2014, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team came out on top against the Memphis Tigers 4-3. The Bisons hardnosed defense left Memphis on the edge of their seat early in the first half. 12 minutes into the first half, the Memphis Tigers placed one in the back of the net that deflected off of the crossbar and then the goalkeeper’s back. The score was capped off with quite the celebration, that ended in a bit of embarrassment as Memphis’ Hector Cantele slipped and fell as he ran into the crowd. With 14 minutes left in the first half, a turnover lead to a quick score by Raul Gonzalez, bringing the score to 2-0. The sense of urgency went up tremendously on both sides, and six minutes after Memphis’ second score, the Bisons acquired a breakaway pass that led to a goal from freshman Jonathan Ramirez, Lipscomb’s first score of the game. With a pass from junior Anthony Cedano (his second assist of the game), junior Josue Chavez tied up the score at 2-2 with four minutes left in the half. Four minutes into the second half, the Memphis Tigers brought an onslaught of passes that ended with Gonzalez scoring his second goal of the game. In the 58th minute, junior Matt Kerridge scored to tie the game up once again, this time at three goals apiece. Lipscomb duplicated the feat two minutes later with a second goal from Chavez, making the score...

Lady Bison soccer takes victory in double overtime

The Lady Bisons soccer team defended their home turf with a 1-0 victory against the Catamounts of Western Carolina University Friday night. Throughout the first half, the Lady Bisons kept the tempo high and their opponent on their heels with aggressive play that created many scoring opportunities, but score at the half remained 0-0. In the second half, Lipscomb showed great defense, and yet had a problem with offensively. The tempo picked up even more, with many close calls from both Lipscomb and Western Carolina. But, the results of the second half only matched what came from the first with both teams remaining scoreless at the end of regulation. With 10 extra minutes added for overtime, Western Carolina raised the intensity level, creating an onslaught of attempts to score and end the game. However, they were turned away with the determined defense of the Lady Bisons and sophomore goalie Anna Buhigas, who kept the show going. With the first additional 10 minutes ending up scoreless, there was a second 10 minute period added on. Both the Bisons and Catamounts were landlocked and could not find their way into the back of the net, until senior Baylee Linnell found fellow senior Brittany Rupple who then scorched a shot into the upper left corner of the goal past the outstretched arms of the Western Carolina goalkeeper Carly Tinstman. Lipscomb enrollment continues to reach fall milestones

For the tenth consecutive fall semester, another Lipscomb enrollment record has been broken. More than 4,500 students are getting geared up for the semester that they all have ahead, a record number for the school. Lipscomb’s School of Nursing, the College of Business’ graduate school and Adult Degree Programs have seen double digit increases. “I believe that it is a great thing that Lipscomb University has been expanding for the past few years, especially if we as students and administrators are hoping for the school to gain more support at the national level,” senior Kenny Smith said. In addition, the university has gained an 80.5 percent retention rate with students returning from the last fall semester to this one. That is a three percent increase from the rate of last year and far above the national average of about 70 percent. “Having the recent increase of students this year is an incredible thing, in my opinion,” pharmacy student Brenna Thompson said. “We have the opportunity to bring more individuals into our community and be able to spread the grace that God has for us all within all aspects of our lives. It’s a great thing to have more people invested in what we believe and to eventually be able to share that with the rest of the world in the long run.” Photo courtesy of...
