Sophomore pitcher Whitney Kiihnl was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week on Monday. MACON, Ga. – USC Upstate’s Crislyn Chewning earned her first A-Sun Softball Player of the Week accolade after a tremendous week in which she lead USC Upstate at the plate with a .589 batting average, while Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl tallied her fifth career A-Sun Softball Pitcher of the Week honor and fourth on the season after recording three shutouts against UNF, Jacksonville and Western Kentucky. Chewning collected three triples in six games and recorded four multi-hit games in six outings last week, including three-hit contests against A-Sun foes FGCU and Stetson. The Willamina, Ore. native posted four hits and four RBIs in the doubleheader sweep at Gardner-Webb and had three hits, two runs and a RBI in second game against FGCU. Chewning also collected three hits with a double and a triple in the 7-2 victory versus Stetson, in addition to two runs and a RBI. The senior center fielder recorded USC Upstate’s only hit in the second game against the Hatters. In addition to Kiihnl’s three shutouts, 4-0 at Western Kentucky Tuesday, 4-0 at Jacksonville Friday, 3-0 at UNF Saturday, the sophomore pitcher surrendered a total of seven hits and struck out 28. Kiihnl owns a total of nine games this season with double-digit strikeouts, including 11 against the Ospreys and 10 against the Hilltoppers in the past week. The Batesville, Miss. native threw a one-hitter against Jacksonville, barely missing her fifth no-hitter of the season, and allowed two hits against Western Kentucky. Senior pitcher Josh Smith threw his second complete game of the season on Friday night. Smith allowed one run on 7 hits on his way to a 5-3 win over the Redbirds of Illinois State. Friday night the Bisons opened up their weekend series with the Redbirds of Illinois State. Josh Smith made his sixth start of the season. Smith, 4-1 on the year, was coming off of a season-high 15-strikeout game. Smith would not disappoint in this outing either. Throwing nine complete innings , Smith allowed one run on seven hits. Smith walked one and struck out 15, again. Illinois State came into the game with a 12-10 record. The Redbirds had won seven out of their last nine. It was very important for Lipscomb to keep SIU off the bases. Coming into Friday night’s game the Redbirds had 47 stolen bases, nearly surpassing their total from all of last season. The Bisons gave Smith an early cushion in the first. Zach Messer drove in freshman Lee Wilson on a beautifully executed hit-and-run. Messer drove a fastball right up the middle as Wilson was attempting to steal second. After three shutout innings from Smith, Lipscomb added another run. Senior Tyler Wilson singled up the middle to score M.L. Williams. Lee Wilson and Corey Hale also scored later in the inning. The Redbirds answered in the fourth scoring one run on two hits. The Bison baseball hosted ETSU on Friday and Saturday. While the Bisons won on Friday by a score of 9-4, the team lost both games of their doubleheader on Saturday, however, losing 15-6 and 6-3. Game 1 On Friday, senior Josh Smith tstarted for the Bisons. This was Smith’s fifth decision of the season. The win brought his record to 4-1 overall. Smith’s strikeout total, 15, was the highest for the Bison’s in four years. ETSU got on the board early in the first, the Bisons, however, answered back with two runs in the third. Kyle Henry started off the inning with a double to center. Henry moved over to third on a Tyler Wilson groundout. M.L. Williams then walked on four straight pitches. Lee Wilson drove in Henry on a single to right. Kyle Messer got the second RBI of the inning on a sac-fly that brought in Williams. In the fourth, Henry reached base again on a triple. That hit brought in Hostettler and Hoelzer. Henry scored later on a sac-bunt courtesy of Tyler Wilson. Zach Messer then made a stir of the ballpark, getting a rare inside the park homerun. The hit brought in Lee Wilson and M.L. Williams. Before the game was over ETSU had score 3 more runs, Lipscomb one more. The softball team faced one the best pitchers in the nation on Saturday; that, however, would not slow them down on their way to improve their conference record to 4-0 Game 1 It was an old fashioned pitchers’ duel on Saturday afternoon as Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and Upstate’s Morgan Childers went head-to-head at Draper Diamond. Going into the weekend Kiihnl and Childers ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in hits given up per game. The two pitchers lived up to their rankings until the fourth inning when Lipscomb got on the board via a Mollie Mitchell single that brought in Kellie Sirus. Sirus reached base on a hit-by-pitch. With Kiihnl in the zone, Lipscomb added three more runs to their side of the board in the fifth. Lauren Dortwegt started off the inning with a single to center, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Tucker. Dortwegt then scored on a single courtesy of Abby Keese. Sirus then doubled to left, scoring Keese. Sirus reached third on a Courtney Billington sacrifice fly to right field. Christen Campbell then doubled to left, scoring Sirus. After the fifth, Kiihnl shut down Upstate for two more innings, giving the Lady Bisons a 4-0 win. Kiihnl pitched 7 innings, allowing five hits and striking out 8. Game 2 In game two of the afternoon, Kiihnl showed Upstate that she could not only pitch, but also swing the bat well. It was a busy weekend for the Lady Bisons hosting ETSU and USC twice on the weekend. The ladies swept ETSU 5-0 and 2-1 as part of their “Strike Out Cancer” night to raise breast cancer awareness. Game 1 Sophomore pitcher Whitney Kiihnl improved her record to 15-2 Friday night in game one, throwing her fourth no-hitter of the season. The Lady Bisons scored four runs in the fourth. Megan Rottler singled to score Christen Campbell for run number one. Lauren Dortwegt then singled to center, which brought in Mollie Mitchell and Rottler. Dortwegt scored the fourth run when Mackenzie Tucker singled to bring her in. The Lady Bisons added one more run in the sixth to make it 5-0 when Whitney Kiihnl scored on an error by ETSU’s catcher. Center fielder Lauren Dortwegt had a great game from the plate, going 3-4 with 2 RBI’s. Her double in the third was also the only extra-base hit from either team. Mackenzie Tucker and Kellie Sirus both had two hits. Kiihnl shut down ETSU, striking out 10 and walking none. Kiihnl was one error away from her second perfect game of the season. Game 2 In the second game of the evening the Lady Bison’s got on the board early. In the first inning the ladies loaded the bases with Tucker, Keese, and Sirus. The next batter, Campbell walked to bring in Tucker. ETSU tied the game at one in the third inning when Schneider doubled to left, driving in one run.
