The Lipscomb Lady Bisons’ (25-24) strong bats run-ruled the Tennessee State Tigers (10-40) 10-1 Tuesday evening at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium. Lipscomb put on its annual “Think Pink” and “Strike Out” cancer fundraiser. All proceeds went to cancer research and allowed the Lady Bisons to sport their pink tops for the game. In the first inning, freshman Mandy Jordan got rolling early and struck out the side to start for Lipscomb. “I thought Mandy had a great first inning to set the tone,” head coach Kristin Ryman said. The Lady Bisons’ offense helped her by drawing three walks and collecting four hits that turned into five runs and a commanding 5-0 lead. One of those hits was by freshman Malorie Giere, who hit a shot off the wall that scored three of those early runs for Lipscomb. Senior Dee Baddley made a leaping grab to steal a homerun from Danica Gleason and record the last out of the top of the third. “We’ve talked so much this year about staying in attack mode, not just offensively but defensively too,” Ryman said. Caitlin Plocheck got the bottom of the inning started by smashing a solo homer to add another run for Lipscomb to increase the lead to 6-0. “She’s [Plocheck] been in a real groove,” Ryman said. “Having Plocheck doing what she’s doing right now is such a key for our lineup.” Freshman Abi Stephens got the Tigers on the board with a solo homerun of her own in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the lead to 6-1. “One of things we’re trying to work on with her is...

Poodle skirts and plain white t-shirts were once again all the rage as the prom from Back to the Future invaded Lipscomb’s campus Saturday night for the third annual Full Moon Festival. “It is an inclusive event for all of campus, so not just certain social clubs are invited, but people from all clubs are invited and people from all over Lipscomb,” social director for Theta Psi William Sisson said. Theta Psi and Delta Omega hosted the event featuring live bands and dancing. The event served as a platform for alcohol awareness and the drinks at the event were served in red solo cups. “We thought it’d be ironic to have our alcohol awareness event look like a high school prom,” president of Theta Psi Michael Clinger said. Each social club is required to put on both an event that financially benefits an organization of its choosing and one that raises drug and alcohol awareness. “It was really nice that we got to take care of both of our requirements with this one event,” Clinger said. “It’s great to have an awesome group of guys and have the manpower to get it done.” Full Moon Festival benefited Five Plus Two Ministries this year. Senior Jordan Beale helped start the organization during her sophomore year after taking a semester off from school to live in Kenya and work with an orphanage. “I helped start the ministry along with my family and home church in Kentucky,” Beale said. “I really started to feel a calling from the Lord to go over to Kenya.” Full Moon Festival raised approximately $1,1000 for Five Plus Two Ministries. The money will aid in building a...

The Lipscomb softball team (18-16) lost to in-state foe Tennessee (26-8) 7-1 Tuesday afternoon at Draper Diamond at Smith Sadium in front of a record crowd of 553. Senior Tanner Sanders (8-9) took to the circle for Lipscomb. The Lady Vols added the first run of the game in the third as freshman Brook Vines single scored sophomore CJ McClain from third base. Senior Lexi Overstreet added two more runs to the Tennessee lead with a two-run double with two outs in the third to make it 3-0. “We made a couple actual errors, but then we had a couple mental miscues,” head coach Kristin Ryman said. “I don’t think we always executed defensively tonight.” Senior Kelly Young took over for Sanders in the third when Sanders could not close out the inning after recording two outs. Young was able to get the final out and get out of the inning. “I thought our pitchers did a good job, just maybe some untimely hits after they got runners on,” Ryman said. Tennessee loaded the bases in the fourth, threatening to extend the lead. The bases were cleared by sophomore Meghan Gregg as she drove in three more runs, extending the lead to 6-0. Senior Dee Baddley made a leaping catch at the wall to make the third out of the inning. “Defensively executing with two outs and not leaving the door open, I think as soon as you do, against any team, they are going to take advantage of it,” Ryman said. The Lady Bisons’ scored a run in the fourth courtesy of senior Baylee Williams, who knocked in sophomore Abby Fenichel,...

The Lady Bisons (11-9) softball team went 2-2 in this weekend’s Purple and Gold Challenge. The five team round robin-style tournament was played at Draper Diamond and featured Youngstown State, Indiana State, Furman, and Troy. The first game was Friday night against the Furman Paladins (9-11). Senior Tanner Sanders started the game in the circle for Lipscomb. The first hit of the game was a first pitch, lead-off home run from Furman’s Candace Johnson, to give the Paladins an early 1-0 lead. “Anytime you start the game with first pitch, first hit home run it’s going to give your team [Furman] a lot of confidence,” head coach Kristin Ryman said. But the Lady Bisons fought back to tie it late, as sophomore Abbey Fenichel’s sacrifice fly scored Destinee Brewer and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. The Paladins took advantage of a bases loaded opportunity in the opening frame of the eighth as AnnaRose Borrelli hit a grand slam off of Sanders (5-4) to give Furman the lead for good. The Lady Bisons salvaged one run in the bottom of the eighth but ultimately fell 7-3. “Credit their hitters, they’re up there hacking away and battling counts, making her [Sanders] throw a lot of pitches,” Ryman said. Senior pitcher Kelly Young got the nod in Lipscomb’s second game of the challenge against Troy Saturday. Freshman Sarah Higgins did her part to help out Young by hitting her fifth home run of the year in the third inning to give Lipscomb the only lead it needed. Young pitched a complete game shutout on the way to her third win...

The Lady Bisons welcomed the Cardinals from Louisville for a doubleheader home-opener at Draper Diamond. Lipscomb split the series with a 2-1 win in the first game and a 7-1 loss in the second. Senior Tanner Sanders took the circle for Lipscomb’s first game of the doubleheader against Louisville. Senior Brittany Elmore got things started for the Lady Bisons early, getting on base from the lead-off spot. She scored the first run of the game via an RBI from sophomore Caitlin Plocheck, giving Lipscomb a 1-0 lead in the first inning. “We’ve been really focusing on being in attack mode, and I thought we did that from the very beginning of the game,” head coach Kristin Ryman said. The second run for the Lady Bisons came in the third inning as Elmore knocked in freshman Khayla Green for a 2-0 Lipscomb lead. Brittany Sims hit a stand-up double to start the sixth for Louisville. She advanced to third base and scored on a fielder’s choice, cutting the lead to 2-1. But Sanders (5-3) shut the door on the Louisville rally, and finished her complete game to secure the 2-1 win for the Lady Bisons. Freshman Mandy Jordan pitched the second game of the doubleheader for Lipscomb. It was her first home start for the Lady Bisons. Freshman Sarah Higgins hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the Lady Bisons an early 1-0 lead. Hailey Smith crushed a solo home-run for Louisville in the fifth to tie the game 1-1. The Cardinals kept hitting and tacked on three more runs in the inning, to make it 4-1....
