Lady Bisons’ 42-point win sets record for margin of victory in ASUN postseason game

The Lady Bisons opened the first round of the ASUN conference tournament with a dominant 42-point win over the No. 5 seed USC Upstate. Lipscomb cruised against USC Upstate in a 95-53 victory to reach the tournament semifinals for the first time since 2008. The win margin set a record for the largest victory in an ASUN conference tournament game. Lipscomb fell to USC Upstate earlier in the regular season 80-64. “With a sense of finality for these seniors, they played with greater aggressiveness and awareness during the game,” coach Greg Brown said. Both teams came out hot from behind the arc. Emily Kmec nailed a three-pointer from deep, and it was answered by three from Anda Kuzmina. The three-point shooting was followed by droughts for both teams. Solid defense from the Bisons’ 2-3 set forced seven turnovers in the first quarter and a dry spell that lasted 4:11. Poor shooting and turnovers held Lipscomb back on the offensive end. They finished the low scoring quarter with a lead of 15-10 behind some handiwork in the paint from Taylor Clark. Kmec started the second quarter off right with another three, followed by another two possessions later. She finished the night with 18 points, hitting six of nine from three. Kmec also grabbed four boards. Midway through the second quarter Loren Cagle displayed her skills in a dazzling play in which she dribbled through the defense and then back out to nail a three-pointer. This was followed by a three on the next possession from Kennedy Potts assisted by Cagle, who was named ASUN player of the year earlier in...

Lipscomb Baseball caps off tough weekend with win against Fairleigh Dickinson

Freshman pitcher Noah Thompson won his first career game on the mound against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights to close out a tough weekend at home. Thompson, Lipscomb’s starting pitcher, allowed four hits and only walked one batter to lead the Bisons to a 3 – 1 victory on Sunday. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Bisons. Lipscomb lost to Indiana State on Friday and Kent State on Saturday. Fairleigh Dickinson’s hitting came easy early against Thompson with a leadoff double by Brandon Seltzer in the first inning. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and was brought home on an RBI single from Bobby Romano. “That’s not a good way to start off,” Thompson said about his start. “I usually get better as I go on. Once I get past that first inning, I’m usually pretty good.” Thompson went on to pitch the first five innings. He faced 21 batters, striking out five of them. He only allowed two hits after the first inning. “He’s a guy we’re going to count on every weekend,” coach Jeff Forehand said on Thompson. “He got us through five innings today. And the bullpen came in behind him and did a great job.” Center fielder Josh Martinez got the Bisons rolling on offense with a solo homer over the right field wall to tie the game at one in the bottom of the second. Martinez’s solo shot was followed by singles from Chris Bashlor and Blake Thomas. Despite allowing three hits on consecutive at bats, pitcher Corey Zeller closed out the inning with two strikeouts and a fly out,...

‘Black Panther’ trail-blazes powerful message in latest Marvel movie

A new king of Wakanda is crowned in the latest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Black Panther” is written and directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed) and stars Chadwick Boseman as the Black Panther himself. Boseman first made his appearance in this role in “Captain American: Civil War.” Now his character, T’challa, returns home to Wakanda after the death of his father. Here, he takes over the role of king, a position his father held before him. As king, T’challa presides over a country thought to be one of the most underdeveloped in the world, when in fact it is the most advanced. T’challa does not feel ready to take on this major role, but he does what he must anyway. This is where his internal struggle of identity originates. Lupita Nyong’o plays the role Nakia, a character that left her country in order to work as a foreign aid independent of Wakanda. Her character also serves as an influential love interest to T’challa. The relationship between T’challa and Nakia is one of the most interesting dynamics in the movie. The two have opposing views on how the nation of Wakanda should be run. They balance each other out well, providing dialogue between them in many scenes. The country of Wakanda and its leader face the outside threat of a character named Klaue played by Andy Serkis. Klaue has been smuggling a valuable material called Vibranium out of Wakanda to sell it to anyone willing to pay his price. Vibranium is the strongest material in the world of Marvel and was used to advance the technology and weapons of...

Veteran animator Aaron Blaise brings Disney to Lipscomb

Lipscomb University welcomed Disney animator Aaron Blaise to speak on his career in animation and the difficulties in his line of work. Blaise is known for his animation work in films like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, Mulan and Brother Bear. Blaise referred to the films that were released in this era as Disney’s second “Golden Age” of animation. Students and members of the public alike were treated with samples of animation and art from the numerous films he has worked on, as well as ones that were never made. Blaise discussed the importance of the persistence of his vision throughout his career. “It’s the persistent vision of wanting to be an artist, “Blaise said. “That’s what has always driven me.” Blaise grew up in rural Florida in the middle of the Everglades in a trailer. He drew early inspiration for drawing from the animals he saw around his home and in National Geographic magazines. Going into college, his ideal career was to be an illustrator or wildlife artist for National Geographic. However, Blaise was hired after a second internship with Disney. There he worked under Glen Keane, the creator of characters such as Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Beast from Beauty and the Beast. He credits Keane as an inspiration. “He’s the reason I’m doing exactly what I’m doing now,” Blaise said. At the young age of 22, Blaise got what he described to be his first big break. He was assigned to animate a scene for Beast in Beauty and the Beast. From there, his career took off. “I never had any intention...
