Parking on campus just became much more complex because Lipscomb is hosting The Dove Awards. For students, faculty, staff and anyone else trying to park at Lipscomb the beginning of this week here is what you need to know. The Purple and Green levels in the Arena Garage are closed until Tuesday night Oct. 7. All vehicles had to be moved from those levels by 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6. The Gold and Blue levels of the Arena Garage are open for students. There is no overnight parking in the West Garage on Oct. 6. The entire garage will be closed to students on Oct. 7. The West Garage will opened back up on Tuesday night Oct 7. Faculty and staff parking spaces are open to students Monday Oct. 6 and Tuesday Oct. 7. Faculty and staff need to park at Woodmont Hills on Oct. 6 and Oct. 7. Shuttles will run from Woodmont Hills from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. both days. WOMEN’S SOCCER The Lady Bisons soccer team holds a 6-4-1 record. In the month of September, Lipscomb is 5-2 with wins over Austin Peay, Western California, Chattanooga, Samford and Grand Canyon. With the win over Chattanooga, the program made history. The win was the third in a row, which was the first time the women’s soccer program had won three consecutive games. Sophomore Carolyn Springsteen earned Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week the week of Sept. 8. Sophomore Ellen Lundy leads all scorers with four goals and eight points. Freshman Emily Rodgers scored her first career goal in a 3-1 loss to Arizona. Lipscomb’s recent hot streak helped vault them into the top ten of the National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America’s (NSCAA) Southeast poll. They ranked eighth in the most recent poll. The Lady Bisons will start their conference schedule Sept. 27 against Kennesaw State at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. Men’s Soccer After big recent wins over Memphis and Houston Baptist, the men’s soccer team joined the women’s team in the top ten of the NSCAA poll. The Bisons currently sit at number six. Following a week in which he produced two goals and an assist, junior Josue Chavez became the third Bison in four weeks (joining Luke Gearin and Matt Kerridge) to win the Atlantic Sun Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. CROSS COUNTRY Both the men’s and women’s cross country squads are ranked in the top 10 of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s south region rankings. After cutting the ribbon on Sept. 12, the Nashville Predators look forward to the new possibilities the Ford Ice Center will bring to the Nashville area. The new facility includes two NHL-size rinks, an upstairs party area, a café and a Predators apparel shop. The organization is hoping Ford Ice will provide a place for people to learn how to skate as well as grow the game of hockey in the Nashville area. “This facility is amazing,” Predators intern Kayla Evans said. “I’m glad the organization had the chance to build this, and I’m excited to see hockey grow because of the Ford Ice Center.” Olympic Gold figure skater Scott Hamilton will oversee the Hamilton Skating Academy, which will provide classes for all ages to come out to Ford Ice Center and learn how to skate. Country music singer-songwriter Vince Gill plans to broaden the hockey horizon in Nashville by reaching out to children. The plan is to create a scholarship program funded at Ford Ice Center. The program will be designed to give children the opportunity to play hockey without the hurdles of equipment costs or ice time. As part of the grand opening, the Predators hosted a rookie tournament. Rookies from the Predators, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins played three games each. The tournament provided more preparation for NHL training camp. Hockey fans can also catch Vanderbilt, Middle Tennessee State University and Sewanee’s club hockey teams playing at Ford Ice Center. For the second year in a row, Phi Sigma took home first place in the powderpuff football tournament after beating Pi Delta in the championship game. Phi Sigma athletic director Mallory Johnson was proud of her team’s effort. “We won last year, the first year of this tournament,” Johnson said, “I love to see the clubs having friendly competition, but we just wanted to come out and defend the title.” The teams played two rounds before being narrowed down to two teams for the championship. In the first round, Delta Sigma beat Kappa Chi, Phi Sigma beat Phi Nu and Delta Xi forfeited giving Delta Omega a win. Pi Delta beat Delta Omega and Phi Sigma beat Delta Sigma in the second round. Obviously the clubs wanted to win, but that was not the main goal for the tournament. “Of course I would have liked to win to go to the championship, but I just love seeing all the clubs out here enjoying the day together,” Delta Omega president Makenzie Kanyuh said, “Events like this put social clubs in a positive light.” After the first two rounds, a break took place where the clubs enjoyed food and drinks together. Music and other tailgate games were being played as well. The tournament also provided a time for the pledges to have a cheer-off during the games. “Social clubs rarely ever get to come together as one Greek community,” Kanyuh said. “It’s kind of funny powderpuff brought us together today, but the boys got a good laugh and the girls got to be a little competitive. The fall sports teams are off to a great start this semester. Here is a recap on the games that have already been completed so far. Volleyball The Lipscomb volleyball team opened up the 2014 season with a 2-1 record at the Kansas Invitational. Friday Aug. 29 started with a disappointing season opener, losing 3-1 to No. 23 Creighton. Junior Brittany Estes recored her first career triple double in the match with 12 kills, 12 digs and 10 assists. Junior Bri McCombs led Lipscomb with 19 digs. Senior Lauren Ford added 18 digs. The big win came later that night against No. 22 Kansas. The Lady Bisons were down 2-0, but rallied back winning three sets in a row to get the 3-2 victory. The win was the first for the program over a ranked opponent. Lipscomb took set three 25-14, set four 26-24 and set five 15-12. Senior Jewell Dobson had a match-high 20 kills. Estes notched a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. McCombs recorded a match-high 20 digs. Coach Brandon Rosenthal earned his 200th win after the Lady Bisons defeated Utah Valley 3-1 on Aug. 30. Lipscomb won the first set 25-23, third set 25-17 and fourth set 25-15. Estes had 10 kills in the match, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for the invitational. Ford recorded a match high 15 kills. McCombs led the team with 14 digs. Junior Molly Spitznagle’s hitting percentage was .562 in the match with 10 kills.
