The Capitol Mall, the Lincoln Memorial and the White House will substitute for the classroom Feb. 25-March 2 when 40 law, justice and society students observe and interact with the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government in Washington, D.C. The trip is one element of the Introduction to American Law class taught by Dr. Charla Long. By visiting the capital, students will be able to experience the legal processes they are learning about in textbooks. The tour schedule is packed, but there will be free time to allow the students to discover the city for themselves. A mandatory photo scavenger hunt is planned to guide students to the most important places in Washington, D.C. Students will also be required to keep a daily journal recounting what they learned that day to assist them with the final paper due after the trip. Fresh off the plane, students will head to a moonlight walking tour of the mall. Here, they will see the U.S. Capitol, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Smithsonian, and the Washington, World War II and Lincoln monuments. “I am excited to see American history from my own perspective,” said sophomore Brooke Brennan, an LJS major from Old Hickory, Tenn. Other plans for the group include a visit to the National Archives, Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Holocaust Museum. Seats have been confirmed for all students at U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments and they will also tour the White House. Introduction to American Law students will also be given the opportunity to meet with their senators at Tennessee Tuesdays on the Hill. “Getting the chance to meet...

A graduate student who played for Kansas State in her undergrad days is bringing her talents to Lipscomb’s volleyball team. Abby Fay, who was red-shirted her freshman year and sat out her last year, still has a year of eligibility to offer while pursuing her MBA at Lipscomb. “We’re really excited about her and the leadership style and ability she will bring to our team,” said coach Brandon Rosenthal. “We’re a completely new team, so we’re definitely looking for that leadership aspect.” A well-rounded player, able to contribute as a setter and libero, Fay brings leadership qualities gained from experience with a Big 12 program, the coach said. Fay says she “feels like a little kid again” by getting to come back and play one more year of volleyball. She played on the same club team as senior hitters Alex Kelly and Meghan Hinemeyer and senior setter Jake Pease. “Their club team was one of the most exciting club teams,” Rosenthal told Mark McGee, Lipscomb sports spokesman. “People gravitated towards them. They were the fiercest and the most competitive team around. They didn’t care who a team was, what the jersey said or how tall the players were they were. They were going to give everything they had.” Although Fay will not have the opportunity to play with her club teammates, the four still remain in contact as Alex Kelly inspired Fay to consider Lipscomb. “I was here visiting this past semester and really felt like this was a place where I could see myself,” said Fay. “It reminded me so much of club volleyball, and club volleyball for me...

[Update] Some exams originally scheduled for tomorrow have been moved to Tuesday. Check your Lipscomb email for the revised schedule. By 6 p.m. the roads were covered and dozens of wrecks were being reported. The temperature continues to drop with a current wind chill of 10 degrees, and snow is expected to continue to fall all night. Nashville is expected to see up to three inches by morning and is currently under a winter weather advisory. The roads are getting slicker with the falling temperatures and strong winds are going to make driving difficult, so use caution while driving if you must get out. There have already been reports by many Lipscomb students of sliding on the roads and witnessing collisions. David Lipscomb campus school is closed Monday because of weather. The Civil Wars, an up-and-coming Americana duo who hail from Nashville, will perform a free concert for Lipscomb students with IDs this Friday, December 3. The show starts at 7:00 p.m. in Shamblin Theater. Doors open at 6, and space is limited. Dillon Hodges is the opening act. Joy Williams and John Paul White, who make up the band, met a year and a half ago and immediately started writing music and performing together. “I cannot wait until the prettiest woman in the music biz is here on campus this weekend,” read freshman Adam Sain’s facebook status. Their four-song EP was released on iTunes and debuted at #4 on the Singer/Songwriter Top Albums chart and had a song featured on Grey’s Anatomy. Their first full-length cd, Barton Hollow, is set to be released on February 1 of next year. Their best-known song, “Poison and Wine,” has been on USA Today’s “Picks of the Week” list, and Taylor Swift said of the song: “This song kills me. It’s such a real glimpse into miscommunications in a relationship. Love can feel so wrong and so right at the same time. I think this is my favorite duet. It’s exquisite.” Their song “Barton Hollow” will be used in Billy Reid’s 2011 Spring fashion show. “You’re not going to want to miss out on this exciting event,” said SGA spiritaul life chair Amy Etepp, a junior public relations major form Kingsport, Tenn. “The Civil Wars will become your new favorite group.” Don’t miss this exciting event!
