Bison basketball picks up 20th win on Senior Night

Lipscomb entered Senior Night with the number two seed wrapped up for the ASUN tournament. But they certainly played like the tournament had already started. Seeking their second-straight 20-win campaign in the regular season finale, the Lipscomb Bisons (20-9, 10-4 ASUN) took down the Kennesaw State Owls (10-19, 6-8 ASUN) 83-74 without surrendering the lead or even a tie. Prior to the game, Lipscomb honored seniors Asa Duvall, Aaron Korn and George Brammeier. Alexander said the veterans “made a huge impact on our team” during their careers. “Not necessarily with career stats, but been exactly the kind of guys that we think Lipscomb deserves. They’re leaving this program much better than the way that they found it, and, you know, any time you can say that then you’ve done your job.” Junior center Rob Marberry led the Bisons in scoring for the 10th time this season, shooting 13-of-15 on field goals and 6-of-6 on free throws for 32 points. “My teammates, they’re some of the best passers in the league,” Marberry said. “And so I can always count on them to give me a perfect pass.” Four of his field goals were dunks. He added a team-high 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. “I’ve got the flu right now,” Marberry said, “so … I lost a couple pounds doing that.” Leading scorer Garrison Mathews put in a bit of an uncharacteristic performance for Lipscomb, shooting 4-of-11 on field goals and 5-of-7 on free throws for 14 points. At the end of the first half, Mathews banked in a double-clutch desperation three with time about to expire....

Bisons baseball closes out opening series with loss to UNC Asheville

A loss checkered with pitching troubles tainted an otherwise decent start for the Lipscomb baseball season. The Lipscomb Bisons (2-1) cycled through eight pitchers on Sunday and could not find any rhythm against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs (1-2). Costly errors combined with only three runs on eight hits contributed to the loss. The final score was 6-3 in favor of the Bulldogs. “Their pitcher was really good,” Bisons head coach Jeff Forehand said. “But we were right in the game. We cut it to one. I really thought we had an opportunity; then they answered with two runs of their own…I think we learned a lot today.” Freshman pitcher Noah Thompson made his first career appearance and lasted for a little over three innings before retiring. Thompson struck out three hitters but also allowed three hits and two runs, walked three hitters and hit another with a pitch. “He didn’t pitch his best today,” Forehand said. “But I think that that’s only the bright spots to come, he’s going to be a gem for us, I think, down the line.” Despite the collapse on Sunday, Lipscomb now stands at 2-1 after a three-game season opener against the Bulldogs. The Bisons started with a 3-2 victory on Friday in which the bullpen took over for the final three innings and allowed one hit and zero runs in that span. Lipscomb had a similar game on Saturday against the Bulldogs, with starting junior pitcher Chris Kachmar allowing three hits and two runs in five innings and junior third baseman Zeke Dodson hitting what has been, so far, Lipscomb’s only home run...
Lady Bisons go cold, fall to Jacksonville

Lady Bisons go cold, fall to Jacksonville

If you watched the Lady Bisons two days ago, you’ll remember the entourage of three-pointers they put up against North Florida. Tonight was a completely different story, as Lipscomb (10-16, 6-5 ASUN) went 0-of-5 on three-pointers in a 70-63 home loss to the Jacksonville Dolphins (19-7, 9-2 ASUN). The Lady Bisons lost their grip on both ends of the floor in the second half and never quite caught up. Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown acknowledged the disappointment of the loss and said there is “room to grow,” but he also sounded optimistic. “I like the way we executed,” Brown said, “you know, it’s been a lot of games and quick turnaround right here, so, proud of their effort, keeping their legs underneath them.” At the end of the first half, both teams were locked in a 30-30 defensive staring contest. The second half began with Lipscomb striking on a Loren Cagle score to put the Lady Bisons up by 2. It was a quick score that, for a moment, made it seem like Lipscomb might be able to establish momentum. And then Jacksonville held Lipscomb scoreless for the next 6 minutes and 56 seconds. Lipscomb slid in and out of the competition throughout the rest of the game but could never regain the lead. Down 51-43 with just under 8 minutes to play in the fourth period, the Lady Bisons tried to rally up a comeback. The closest Lipscomb got was a 53-51 Jacksonville lead with 5:40 left in the game. “We’re not measuring that one by the score,” Brown said, “we’re measuring by the amount of improvement we...
Bisons shut down Jacksonville at home

Bisons shut down Jacksonville at home

If you like blowouts, tonight was your lucky night. The Lipscomb Bisons (16-9, 6-4 ASUN) were able to capitalize on a stellar defensive performance that enabled runs of 15 and 19 unanswered points against the Jacksonville Dolphins (12-15, 6-4 ASUN) on Thursday night. Junior guard Garrison Mathews’s team-high 23 points helped the Bisons in their quest to avoid going 0-2 against Jacksonville this year. The final score was 82-59 Lipscomb. It seemed like an anomalous outcome following the Bisons’ 18-point loss against Jacksonville on Jan. 13. “Well, they were missing their best player,” Lipscomb head coach Casey Alexander said. Redshirt senior guard Devin Harris, who originally was projected to start, was absent for unspecified reasons. Lipscomb put together an all-around shutdown of the Dolphins. “Obviously it was our defensive effort,” Mathews said, adding that they “played terrible defensively earlier in the season” against Jacksonville. But things didn’t start out as a blowout. The game was tied at 14 points with 13:59 to go in the first half, and it looked like fans would be witnessing a competitive game throughout the night. And then suddenly the Bisons forced Jacksonville into multiple fouls and mistakes, and the Dolphins were staring at a 29-14 deficit until the 6:30 mark. The Dolphins retaliated with a 6-0 run and finished out the half with a more competitive edge. Lipscomb matched their efforts and both teams went into halftime with a 42-32 Lipscomb lead. Lipscomb’s 19-point run in the second half made the score 63-34 with 13:21 to go. With approximately 7 minutes left to play, the Dolphins had only put up 8 second-half points....
Lady Bisons score season-high 97 points in home victory over USC Upstate

Lady Bisons score season-high 97 points in home victory over USC Upstate

It was a tale of the Lipscomb bench in Nashville. Lexi Manos scored a career-high 20 points en route to a total of 57 points put up by the Lipscomb Lady Bisons’ bench. The Lady Bisons had control for most of the game as they won 97-78. The USC Upstate Spartans struggled to convert on shots, going 27-of-77 on field goals (35.1 percent). This led to 50 rebounds for the Lady Bisons as opposed to 40 for the Spartans. Upstate could not contain Lipscomb’s offense, which generated a season-high point total. After beginning with a promising 7-0 lead, including a 3-pointer to start things out, the Spartans allowed multiple scoring runs by Lipscomb to quickly erase that momentum. After the first half, Upstate had only converted 23.7 percent on field goals, including 2-of-15 from the 3-point line. The score at that point was 45-26 Lipscomb. The Spartans engendered a 5-point run to start the second half. But it wasn’t enough, as the Lady Bisons quickly slotted themselves back into the competition. Both teams each scored 52 points apiece in the second half. The main story for the Spartans was their consistently missed shots. They were off-target from the start and couldn’t really pick up in that category until the Lipscomb bench saw a lot more playing time towards the end of the game. The main story of the night for Lipscomb was Lexi Manos, who put up the most points of her career. Coming off the bench, Manos converted on her first five field goal attempts to result in 9-of-14 on the night for her team-high 20 points. “It...
