Lumination Radio will be broadcasting the Lipscomb basketball doubleheader against Jacksonville University on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tipoff for the women’s game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT, while the men’s game starts at 4 p.m. Click here to access the radio station, which is also accessible by clicking the “Radio” tab above. The station is free to listen to. Spencer Boehme will be on play-by-play for both games. Bailey Burnett will be joining as color for the women’s game, while Russell Vannozzi will do the same for the men’s. The Lady Bisons (2-20, 0-9 ASUN) will be looking for their first conference win. They have lost 19 straight games since they started the season 2-1. Sophomore guard Taylor Clark leads the team with 11.5 points per game. Lipscomb University hosted former Atlanta Braves superstar Fred McGriff during its annual First Pitch Dinner on Saturday. Jonathan Seamon, the ESPN+ play-by-play man for the Bisons, emceed the event. He also interviewed Lipscomb baseball coach Jeff Forehand, alongside the team’s senior players, as they anticipated the upcoming 2019 season. Bisons’ head coach Jeff Forehand said that the dinner, which featured a live auction and encouraged fan donations, “was definitely a good night for us as far as raising a few dollars to help” the team and its facilities. The event began with a time of socialization, light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments, and then everyone sat down and ate a complimentary dinner with current players. The baseball season starts Feb. 15 at home against Valparaiso. You can read our season preview here. McGriff injects humor, wisdom and reflection during his interview McGriff started off with an anecdote about how his 10th grade high school baseball team released him. “When [people] see my baseball coach around town, they’re like, ‘Dude, you cut Fred McGriff!'” he said. McGriff played 19 years in the MLB, including five with Atlanta. He was with the Braves during their 1995 World Series victory. “[The] Braves had always made the playoffs and were trying to get over the hump and win a World Series,” McGriff said. “So it was always the pressure on the guys to finally come through and win a World Series.” He finished his career with a .284 batting average, 1,550 RBIs and 493 home runs, per Baseball Reference. The Lipscomb men’s basketball team continued to steamroll through the ASUN as the Bisons grabbed an 86-57 win over the Kennesaw State Owls in Allen Arena Monday night. The Owls (3-17, 0-5 ASUN) kept things a bit too close for comfort for Lipscomb at first, but the Bisons (14-4, 5-0 ASUN) broke away in the second half to stay perfect in conference play. “[You’ve] gotta be prepared for everything,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “And I felt like our guys handled the game where we never really played with great rhythm but still [won] by 29.” The Bisons were led by senior guard Garrison Mathews, who posted 25 points and tied for a team-leading four assists. Senior guard Nathan Moran led the Bisons in three-pointers, shooting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. “It’s just a start, and we have a lot of work to do,” Moran said. “If we can finish and do another 5-0, and another 5-0 [and] another 5-0, who knows where we’ll be?” Redshirt junior guard Tyler Hooker scored 18 for the Owls and led his team with five rebounds. Junior forward Isaac Mbuyamba finished with three blocks. The Bisons went 20-of-27 on free throws compared to the Owls’ 15-of-22. They also out-rebounded Kennesaw State 42-31, with 11 of those coming from senior forward Eli Pepper. As classes begin ramping up once again, now is a great time to continue the conversation about how ludicrous the parking situation at Lipscomb University is. It really baffles me that Lipscomb, a flourishing school in the Southeast, cannot seem to accommodate its growing student body with an equal number of parking spaces. Instead, it seems like more spots continue to be taken away. I have a couple of examples. Right before the 2017 fall semester began, Patrick Cameron’s parking email at the time stated that the parking garage with the tennis court on top would “now be for Faculty, Staff and Guest use only.” To this day, that has not changed. Okay, so if you get paid to go to Lipscomb, you can park in the garage. That’s great. I’m not sure if they had previously closed off the garage in that manner before, but the point is that I wasn’t going to be able to park there. And then, towards the end of the 2018 spring semester, the Ezell parking lot next to the garage got the axe in favor of the upcoming George Shinn Event Center. If you’re a freshman or a transfer this year, yes, that building they’re working on used to be a parking lot. Again, all this blows my mind. You do have Stokes, which is honestly not that bad. It’s right next to the campus and is a short walk, especially if your first class is in McFarland or Hughes or one...

The bench showed up, and the sophomore walk-ons produced 30 points as Lipscomb’s men’s basketball team blew out the Division III Covenant Scots (5-3) on Monday night. The Bisons (8-3) stormed the court with a 119-48 win at Allen Arena in front of a sparse, 1000-member Christmas-break audience. While Lipscomb improves its record, Covenant’s schedule had Lipscomb as an exhibition opponent. “[A] lot of guys got to play, and guys were ready to play when their number was called,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “That’s all that you can ask for as a coach.” Although senior guard Garrison Mathews tallied a team-leading 22 points, it was sophomore guard John Matt Merritt who stole the stage. The former walk-on posted 21 points off the bench, all of which came in the second half. From the three-point range, Merritt went 3-of-4. Coming into the game, Merritt had managed just five points all year. “I would not hesitate to put him in any game, any time, because I trust him, and he’s worked really hard,” Alexander said. “And…he deserves it. He’s just had other people in front of him.” Lipscomb’s bench ended up with 69 points total. Zach Flener, another walk-on sophomore guard, put up nine points as well after having two all year. Freshman guards Alex Jones and Jake Wolfe scored ten points apiece. “[I’ve] got really good teammates, they’re very unselfish,” Merritt said. “They put the ball in the right place.” It was a great showing from a unit that will have to step up in place of five current solid seniors when the season ends.
