Lipscomb volleyball defeated Belmont 3-2 Tuesday night in Allen Arena during volleyball’s Battle of the Boulevard. Belmont took Lipscomb through a five-set match for the second time this season. Tuesday’s victory gave the Bison volleyball team a 13-12 all-time series advantage over Belmont. “It’s a great feeling knowing that we are going to go down in history as the first team to lead the all-time series record over Belmont,” senior outside hitter Brittnay Estes said. Estes has been a leader for the Bisons throughout the season. She has led the team in kills for almost every match and led the team Tuesday with 19 kills. “My goal was to just to be an energizer and a team leader,” Estes said. “I knew that was going to be the way I could help our team win.” Although the Bisons emerged victorious, the Bruins fought back and kept the out-of-conference rivalry alive. “This has been a great rivalry for our program,” head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “I’m glad that we are able to keep the rivalry alive even while being in different conferences.” Lipscomb begins the second half of its conference schedule by playing NJIT Saturday, Oct. 24 at 12 p.m in Allen Arena. In an overtime thriller between the top two teams in Atlantic Sun standings, Florida Gulf Coast University defeated Lipscomb women’s soccer 2-1 Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. This match determined which team would be in sole position of first place in the A-Sun and would be in a position to host the next A- Sun tournament. Junior goalkeeper Anna Buhigas recently earned her third career A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out both Jacksonville and North Florida. FGCU junior mid-fielder Yazmin Velez beat Buhigas with her left foot in the 43rd minute off an assist from FGCU junior Ali Rogers to open the scoring. It looked as if one goal would be all that FGCU would need until Lipscomb scored a shot by senior defender Alex Hickey, who had just entered the match as a sub, in the 79th minute. The score remained 1-1 when the match went into overtime. Buhigas, 2014 A-Sun Goalkeeper of the Year, found her matchup against FGCU junior forward Tabby Tindell, 2014 A-Sun Player of the year. This matchup is the one that ended the game. Exactly seven minutes into the first overtime period, Tindell connected on a pass that sent a rocket into the upper-left corner of the net for the game winning goal. “She made a great run, and was in the right place at the right time,” redshirt sophomore defender Niamh Rawlins said. The Lipscomb men’s soccer team (0-2) fell 3-1 in the home opener against Eastern Illinois Sunday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The offense came out of the gates early for Bisons, but the offense and defense both fell in the second half. The Bisons set the pace within the first few minutes, keeping the ball away from the Panthers (1-1). Lipscomb’s forward sophomore Ivan Alvarado executed a near perfect chip shot over the goalkeeper for the Bison’s first goal of the game. The Panthers scored twice in a two-minute span early in the second half. In the 49th minute sophomore Cameron Botes committed a foul that earned him a yellow card right outside the box. The ball bounced around the box before finding the foot of the Panther’s forward Tyler Oliver, who put it in the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. Just two minutes later Oliver’s twin brother Justin broke the tie on a run-up the box before beating goalkeeper junior Micah Bledsoe on the inside post, taking a 2-1 lead. Later in the second half the Panthers extended their lead after some passing from Tyler Oliver, leading to a goal for the Panther’s Dominic Recca.
