The Lipscomb Bisons women’s basketball team was eliminated in the ASUN quarterfinals by the top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 105-55 in Fort Myers, Fla. Wednesday evening. The Lady Bisons knew the challenges coming into the game; FCGU was the number 1 seed in the tournament and had defeated Lipscomb by double digits in both regular season matchups. But Lipscomb was able to start off hot, mounting a 6-0 lead to start off the game. Unfortunately, the Lady Bisons weren’t able to hold on it. When the Lady Eagles were finally able to score their first points four minutes into the first quarter, they didn’t let up. They went on a 22-4 run to end the first quarter. Unfortunately, FCGU continued to beat up on the Bisons in the second quarter, thanks in large part to the Eagles hitting seven of nine three-point attempts in the quarter. At the half the Bison were down 47-22. Eagles star player China Dow had an extremely good half, leading the team with 19 points going onto the locker room. The Bison’s star player and ASUN Player of the Year Loren Cagle struggled in the first half with only four points. In the second half the Eagles continued their hot streak and never looked back. By the end of the game the Lady Bison’s field goal percentage was only at 30%, and they gave up 11 turnovers. Cagle was held scoreless in the second half, though she led the team in rebounds with eight and assists with six. Dow made eight of ten three-point attempts and totaled 30 points. Emily Kmec led the Bisons with...

Lipscomb baseball was voted pre-season favorites in the ASUN conference for the first time in Lipscomb’s history last year. Yet things didn’t quite go as planed. Lipscomb finished the season with a 9-12 in-conference record and was 6th in the ASUN standings. Head Coach Jeff Forehand said that the Bisons are looking to bounce back this year. “We’re excited to get back together and get another season started,” Forehand said. “Lipscomb has high hopes again, especially after two Bison players (3B Zeke Dodson & DH Jake Perry) received preseason All-ASUN awards. “There’s so many things we’re looking forward to,” Forehand said. “It’s been a long fall, and a lot of preparation goes into playing, and we put a lot of hard work in. We’re looking forward to doing the things we’ve talked about doing all fall.” Forehand said the teams has some big, but simple goals for this year. “First pitch strikes, first batter outs and make the routine plays on defense,” Forehand said. “On offense we’re looking to move runners over and situational hitting. If we can concentrate on what we can control, the opponent doesn’t matter.” Lipscomb’s first series of the season against UNC Ashville will start at 4 p.m. at Ken Dugan Field tomorrow afternoon. Projected Weekend Rotation: Friday – RHP Joshua Colon (Jr.) LHP Jordan Fulbright Saturday – RHP Chris Kachmar (Jr.) LHP Greg Gasparro Sunday – LHP Noah Thompson (Fr.) LHP Jordan Carr After this three-game series, the Bisons will head to Lindsey Nelson Stadium to face the University of Tennessee in Knoxville on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 2:30 p.m. Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

As the 2018 Lipscomb baseball season approaches, two Bisons have been named to the ASUN Baseball Preseason All-Conference Team. Upperclassmen Zeke Dodson and Jake Perry were named to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference team. Third basemen Dodson was voted to the All-ASUN Second Team last year. He led the team in batting average last season, batting .309. Perry smashed 7 home runs last year as a designated hitter. “We are always excited when our players are recognized,” coach Jeff Forehand said about the preseason award. “We are excited about what we’re going to do as a team and they will be a big part of that.” Lipscomb starts its season at home against UNC Ashville on Feb. 16. “We all are looking forward to Feb. 16,” Forehand said. ASUN coaches picked the Bisons to finish sixth in the conference. Forehand said his goals this year are the same. “First pitch strikes, first batter outs, and make the routine plays on defense, on offense [we are focused] on on-base percentage, moving runners over and situational hitting.” “If we can concentrate on what we can control the opponent doesn’t matter.” Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team fell to conference rival Florida Gulf Coast Thursday night in Allen Arena after losing an 18-point second half lead. Coming into the game, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles had an undefeated conference record winning all three of its conference games so far. The Eagles also had a five-game winning streak going into Thursday night. However the Bisons came into the game on a bit of cold streak having lost three of their last five games. Despite this, Lipscomb Head Coach Casey Alexander said the game would not be a problem for the Bisons. “We shouldn’t have a problem keeping the intensity up,” Alexander said. “This is a big game.” The Eagles started off the game strong by making four of their first four shots to take the lead 8-2. However, Lipscomb didn’t let FGCU extend the lead any further at that point. The Bisons stormed right back and tied the game at 13-all two minutes later. The lead went back and forth until Lipscomb junior Garrison Mathews was able to spark the team late in the first half. Mathews, who is having a standout season, made a three-point shot to break the tie and put the Bisons up 41-38 with 2:14 left in the first half. That shot sparked the Bisons, and they went on a 13-2 run to end the first half. At halftime, the Bisons led 48-40. While the Bisons were able to extend their lead by halftime, the men still had a lot to work for the next half as went into the locker room. Florida Gulf Coast’s field goal percentage...

Dr. Chris Gonzalez, a professor in the psychology department, spoke in chapel Thursday morning. Dr. Gonzalez began his message by inviting the audience to participate in a poll. He asked who was the better theologian: Chance the Rapper or Kendrick Lamar. After an overwhelming applause for both, he decided Kendrick Lamar won by a “voice vote.” Gonzalez then went into his talk about the topic of “In -> Tolerance,” or, intentionally moving toward tolerance. He began a thought experiment by telling the audience to “imagine you’re in a room, and there’s one other person in this room. This other person is a different gender than you are. You don’t know this person. They have a different skin color than you, a different religion than you and a different culture than you. “Once you start talking to this person you realize they’re not just different than you, you also have a lot of disagreements with them,” Gonzalez said. “The more you talk to them the more you realize they are strongly holding to their views. How are you feeling?” He said most people would probably feel uncomfortable, defensive or judgmental, and some might want to walk away. Dr. Gonzalez then confessed that he likes being around people that agree with him. Then he can have conversations that are enjoyable, and he can let his defenses down. “It’s completely normal to like to be around people that are like me, but it starts to fall apart when I get tricked into thinking I have a right to feel comfortable,” he said. “Sometimes I get tricked [into thinking] that protecting my comfort is the right...
