The Lipscomb Lady Bisons (27-11) hosted their first ASUN conference series at home this weekend against The Stetson Hatters (23-9), garnering 14 hits in the final match. Lipscomb played two road series against ASUN conference opponents (USC Upstate, Jacksonville) on the road this season, going 3-3. Sophomore third baseman Sarah Higgins was red hot the past two games getting six hits in her last seven at bats with one homer, 4 RBI’s and two runs scored. “Sarah has had so many quality at bats lately,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “She’s gotten solid barrel to the ball. I felt like she was getting solid barrel to the ball in the games before this weekend — she just couldn’t catch a break, so its good to finally see her get some breaks and hit those holes.” The Lady Bison’s weekend got off to a rough start as they were shut out in a 2-0 extra-inning loss to Stetson in the first game of the series. Lipscomb had been shut out in the previous two games leading up to this game. Before last week, Lipscomb hadn’t been shutout all season in 36 games. Despite the team’s offensive struggles, it didn’t stop sophomore pitcher Mandy Jordan from having a stellar performance, pitching all eight innings and only giving up one earned run and striking out 11. In the second game of Saturday’s double header, the Lady Bison’s were able to break the 22-inning shutout streak when Higgins hit a two-run homer. The Lipscomb Lady Bisons participated in the Purple and Gold Challenge at Draper Diamond over the weekend. The team dominated the field against Stony Brook with a score of 7-1, Valparaiso (7-0) and Easter Illinois (4-0, 8-0). Sophomore pitcher Mandy Jordan shut down Eastern Illinois for Lipscomb during the first game on Friday, limiting the Panthers to no runs and only three hits. Saturday morning, senior pitcher McCarley Thomas threw a shut out against Valparaiso, granting the team with the first loss in the season. Saturday afternoon Lipscomb went head-to-to head with Stony Brook and came out victorious as well. Sophomore third baseman Sarah Higgins finished the game two-for-four with a homerun and four RBI’s. In the final game of the Purple and Gold Challenge, Lipscomb played Eastern Illinois for a second time, earning a score of 4-0. Lipscomb finished the tournament with a 15-5 season record, 4-0 in the Purple and Gold Challenge and 5-0 at home. The Lipscomb Bisons (3-7) took on their in-state rival, the Tennessee State Tigers (7-1), Saturday afternoon inside Allen Arena, with the Bisons eventually falling to the Tigers 72-71. TSU won the tip-off, but Lipscomb still got off to a hot start. Four minutes into the game, the Bisons led 10-2, thanks to a 50% FG percentage and making 100% of their 3’s to start the game. Sophomore Forward Eli Pepper was a big part of the Bisons’ early successes, making both of his first two chances from the three-point line. However, the Tigers took their third lead of the game with five minutes left in the first half. The Tigers led the Bisons at the half 41-36. TSU was able to take advantage of the Bisons on the boards in the first half thanks to their size. Lipscomb was outscored in the paint 18-6, and out-rebounded 28-17 in the first half. Sophomore center Rob Marberry led the Bison’s in points going into the half with 13. “They were really good on the boards and took it to us early,” Lipscomb Head Coach Casey Alexander said after the first half. Alexander said the team needed to pick it up in the second half. “Play tougher, play with more confidence, be ready to step up and make shots, rebound better and get loose balls better,” Alexander noted. The Lipscomb Lady Bisons fell to The Freed-Hardman Lions, 81-64, in an exhibition game Thursday night in Allen Arena. The Bisons kept the score close for the first four minutes of the game, trailing 7-6. However, the Lions went on a 9-0 run in the next two minutes which brought the score to 16-7. The Lady Bisons had six turnovers in the first quarter, compared to the Lions who had only one. This helped lead to The Lady Bisons’ trailing behind the Lady Lions with a score of 21-14 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Bisons were able to improve their field goal percentage from 38% to 47%. However, after adding five more turnovers to their turnover total they remained down 43-30 at the end of the half. The Lions outscored the Bisons by only 4 points in the second half, but the Bisons’ struggles in the beginning kept them down, causing them to lose by 17 points. Lady Bison’s Head Coach Greg Brown remarked on the loss saying, “We wanted to come in and be simple, be solid and try to execute and finally, by about the 4th quarter, we did, but we had had dug ourselves in too deep of a hole. “We had too many turnovers and lost too many rebounds.” Coach Brown went on to say how they can look back on this loss and learn from it. Sadie Robertson’s ‘Live Original’ tour returned to Allen Arena Sunday night, bringing some laughter, excitement, worship and inspiration to Nashville. The night started off with a video presentation, introducing everyone in “The Squad,” which included John Luke Robertson, his wife Mary Kate, Reed Robertson, his fiancée Brighton Thompson, Cole Robertson, Bonnie Kate Zoghbi, her husband Max Zoghbi and, of course, Sadie Robertson. Through the speaker’s testimonies, the tour addressed several topics that Christian teens struggle with today. John Luke Robertson opened the event, sharing his testimony and making the point that lives are like a movie — “we can write our own story.” Reed Robertson followed, discussing how he previously dealt with depression and suicidal thoughts. When his father, Duck Dynasty star Jase Robertson, found out that his son was considering committing suicide, he gave him some advice that changed R. Robertson’s thoughts, helping him turn his life around. “Killing your self would be the most selfish thing you could do.” R. Robertson said his father’s words hit him pretty hard and helped him refocus his life to center on Christ and others rather than himself. “I never thought about how killing myself would hurt so many people,” he said. Husband and wife Max and Bonnie Kate Zoghbi also gave their testimony; Bonnie Kate Zoghbi was shot in the knee at the 2012 Aurora, Colorado, theater shooting. M. Zoghbi shared their story in rhyme, revealing his wife’s experience from that night, and how she has continually lived her life full of joy, despite the horrific event.
