This semester, the HumanDocs series has shed new light on the human struggle. The fight for peace in Liberia. The fight against negative portrayals of women in the media. And now the fight over a steaming cup of coffee? On Nov. 30, students gathered to watch “Hot Coffee,” a documentary about seemingly frivolous lawsuits. The film takes its title from the case of Stella Liebeck v. McDonald’s, where an elderly woman sued the fast food giant for giving her a cup of coffee that was so hot it burned her. The case was widely dismissed by the media as ridiculous, even being mocked by David Letterman and on the popular show “Seinfeld.” But this documentary explored Liebeck’s side of the story – the effect the lawsuit had on her family, the harsh treatment from the media and what really happened when she spilled that cup of coffee. As soon as Lieback’s injuries from the spill were shown, the audience began to question just how frivolous her lawsuit was. And the documentary didn’t stop there. Using the McDonald’s case as a springboard, the filmmakers told two other stories highlighting the issues with tort reform. The case of Colin Gourley focused on medical malpractice. As a result of a doctor’s negligence, Colin Gourley was born with cerebral palsy; his twin brother Connor was not. Though a Nebraska jury awarded the family more than $5 million to cover the cost of expenses, a state-mandated cap limited the funds to $1.2 million. Former Mississippi judge Oliver Diaz told the filmmakers how inside deals within the court system had failed the Gourley family. The system...

Bright fluorescent lights, loud music, fog and everyone dancing while throwing paint at each other isn’t something that happens on a regular basis at Lipscomb. But this Friday, Oct. 28, based on last year’s success, SGA is bringing back Paint the Herd. According to SGA member Amy Estepp, one reason why the Paint the Herd tradition is continuing is because “we received amazing support from students last year and even greater responses after the party.” “This year we are having a different DJ and will be expanding the cage to make the space a little larger than last year,” Estepp said, explaining a few changes to the event. Also, this year’s Paint the Herd will last one hour longer. While Paint the Herd is considered a paint-rave, Estepp said the administration is supportive. “We have an amazing administration that supports students and their ideas,” she said, “so it made it an easy decision for us to continue this tradition.” DJ Telemitry will be mixing the music for the night. Last year, many students dressed for the night and wore white t-shirts and SGA handed out white paint suits. Students also brought goggles and wore clothing, including shoes, that they didn’t mind getting paint on. Come prepared to have paint splattered on you and be ready to splatter others. Like last year, the event will take place in the lower level of the Arena West parking garage. Paint the Herd will start at 10 p.m. and end at 1:30 a.m. Lipscomb students can attend for $3 with an ID. Non-students can attend also but for $10. To see what happend last year click...

Fox, home of “Glee,” “House” and other popular–and sometimes offbeat–series, has a new offering this year: “New Girl.” Even before the on-air debut, the early free iTunes download and Hulu offering has made the show a pre-season favorite, of sort. The “New Girl” is Jess, played by Zooey Deschanel, is a quirky young woman who sings to herself based on her feelings. As a positive and trusting young woman, Jess faces a bad break-up and decides to improve her situation by finding new roommates… on craigslist. While her oddities seem strange to her new roommates, over time they grow to understand her. At the same time, she grows to understand the inner workings of men. Deschanel, whose work includes “500 Days of Summer,” “Yes Man” and one half of the talented She and Him, makes Jess a lovable, charming, natural and quirky character who is not afraid to express herself. Her roommates are Nick, Schmidt and Coach, who is later replaced by Winston. Nick, who is played by Jake M. Johnson, is a bartender who has also been recently dumped and is the most reasonable of the group. Johnson’s work includes “No Strings Attached” and “Get Him to the Greek.” Damon Wayans Jr., who originally plays Coach in the pilot has been replaced by Lamormne Morris as Winston, because of prior commitments to another show. Coach was a fitness trainer who didn’t know how to talk to women. Max Greenfield, who portrays Schmidt, has been in a variety of television shows including “Ugly Betty” and “Veronica Mars.” Schmidt fancies himself a ladies man but can make the right decision when it...

For those who are not from Tennessee or old enough to remember, cicadas can seem like a plague of locusts. Every 13 years, Tennessee, along with 13 other states, experience an invasion of cicadas. While these insects are not related to locusts, they still can reek a havoc of annoyance. The majority of their life cycle is lived underground after they hatch from the eggs that the females lays into bark. Along with other noises, mating calls are produced by the males, called imagos, and sometimes multiple males join together for a chorus. They can reach around 100 decibels of noise. The cicadas make noise by using instruments called tymbals that are located on their abdomens. What makes the cicadas so loud? Their bodies are used as resonance chambers, amplifying the sound to deafening levels. Do not go outside and try and mow the lawn, either. You will more than likely be swarmed by the red-eyed creatures if you try and cut your grass. Cicadas are attracted to noises made my lawnmowers and other machinery because it is similar to their sounds. Their constant flying around and landing on or flying into people is just an annoyance. If one lands on someone it is just because they need a place to land. There is no real damage that can be done to people and their pets. If a pet eats a cicada there is no need to worry, it will most likely just give it a stomach ache. The torture is almost over, though. Cicadas only hang around the Nashville area for four to six weeks. If that timeline holds true,...

Think Pink was an all day event, raising awareness of breast cancer, and culminating with a Lady Bisons basketball game. The entire day, Lipscomb had ‘Think Pink’ themed giveaways and activities. Prizes such as an iPad and movie tickets were given away, and students even received a chapel credit for attending the game. At the doors money was raised for breast cancer research, though the night was not meant solely for this purpose. This was also senior night for the Lady Bisons. Jenna Bartsokas, Miaca Bowman and Valerie Bronson were the honored seniors. USC Upstate began scoring early, but the Lady Bisons came back in quickly in the first half to challenge them. By the end of the first, the Lady Bisons had the slight advantage of 33-28. The begining of the second went well for the Lady Bisons holding, USC Upstate to a with a 10-point lead. But Upstate came back with vengeance on a 17-2 run with 7 minutes left in the game. The Lady Bisons recovered and the score was close-knit until the final minutes where Upstate toppled over the Lady Bisons 81-76. Please upgrade your browser Photo Credit: Hunter Patterson & Whitney...
