Rainey, Colony House play spring concert in Bison Square

RAINEY, a band composed entirely of Lipscomb students, opened for Colony House Monday night in Bison Square to kick off the 2016 spring concert. “It was pretty exciting because they are blowing up right now; it was a huge opportunity and we are all stoked,” RAINEY’s keyboard player junior Benjamin Siebold said. RAINEY recently released its first EP. During the set Monday night, the band debuted three new songs, including the band’s new favorite song to play, “Easy.” “We progressed a lot when we added Andrew as our drummer,” junior bassist Trevor Ault said. “He does a lot of electronic stuff and he has helped to take us in the direction we want to go.” After RAINEY warmed up the crowd, Colony House took the stage and performed several of their well-known alternative hits. “I thought it was fun and I wish Lipscomb did more events like this,” freshman Garrett Jones said. “I think it brought the student body together. I think it took some stress off school as the year is winding down.” Colony House is a rising band on the alternative music scene and is known for performing songs centered on faith, love and living life. “To open for Colony House was the greatest opportunity I have had in my life,” Ault said. “Their bass player, as I was exiting the stage said I did really well and that was really cool.”   Photos by Ben Davis and Stephanie...

Hutcheson Gallery features works by groundbreaking fashion designer Halston

The Department of Theatre, College of Engineering and Department of Fashion and Design collaborated to produce an exhibit of works by the fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick, known as Halston. Halston was a preeminent fashion designer in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s who designed clothes for stars such as Lauren Bacall and Liza Minnelli. Lipscomb fashion professor Katy Bates said he was an important American designer. “He was kind of a forerunner in what he did,” Bates said. “He always was forward thinking in his collaborations and in doing a lower price line with J. C. Penney. He was one of the first to do that. The first to use a black model on a runway. He did a pillbox hat that Jackie Kennedy wore. He’s just got a lot of significant historical events and firsts.” The exhibit features several garments displayed on a revolving stage surrounded by fashion photographs projected onto the walls with theatrical lighting. On top of the stage are several mannequins dressed in brightly colored gowns and pantsuits. And the stage itself was designed by five mechanical engineering students as their senior projects. Senior Gabriela Barboza designed the panels and some of the lower portions of the stage. She had been working on designing the stage last semester. “My biggest takeaway would be just being able to think about the actual manufacturing process,” Barboza said. “You can design it one way, but you always have to think about how it’s going to be built actually.” The garments on the rotating stage are only a small portion of a collection of Halston’s work that Lipscomb owns. The entire...

‘The Best Day of Your Life’ celebrates winning 2016 Singarama Sweepstakes Award

After four performances and many hours of hard work, Delta Sigma, Delta Nu, Theta Psi, Phi Sigma and friends took home the Singarama Sweepstakes Award for their show, “The Best Day of Your Life” Saturday night in Collins Alumni Auditorium. The group also won the music category on Friday night and the staging category on Saturday afternoon. “The Best Day of Your Life” starred junior acting major and Theta Psi member Nelson Tilley as an anxious wedding planner faced with multiple mishaps on the day of a wedding. Tilley said he was ecstatic after the big win. “It’s an incredible experience,” Tilley said. “We’ve put so much hard work into it — just as every other club did. Words cannot express how happy I am.” As a first-time Singarama participant, Tilley said he enjoyed getting to know people from the other social clubs in the group. “I kind of equated Theta Psi and Phi Sigma’s relationship at the beginning to, like, a middle school dance,” Tilley said. “We were scared of them — they were scared of us. But I think we just love each other, and it’s just great to be part of such a loving group.” Junior Emily Ann Ray directed the winning group. The Phi Sigma member has participated in Singarama twice before this year, but this year was her first time as director. Ray said she was thrilled that her group’s hard work paid off in a win. “It made everything really worth it,” Ray said. “But I think that it was great after putting so much work into it — not just me, but our...
‘Life’ wins music category at Singarama’s Friday show

‘Life’ wins music category at Singarama’s Friday show

Friday night in Collins Alumni Auditorium marked Singarama’s halfway point, a night that featured the winner of the best music. At the end of the show, student coordinator Adwoa Osei announced “The Best Day of Your Life” as the winner, and the cast members, who remained onstage after their performance, erupted into cheers and applause. “Best Day of Your Life” consisted of students from Delta Nu, Delta Sigma, Theta Psi, Phi Sigma and also independent students. Emily Ann Ray, a junior art major from Chattanooga, directed the show. She said that choosing the music, an integral aspect of Singarama, is no easy task. “We try to get music that applies to all different generations, so that everyone in the audience is involved,” Ray said. She also mentioned that she selected songs that would help tell the story and advance the plot. The songs featured in “Best Day of Your Life” included “You Make My Dreams Come True,” “Dancing Queen,” “Livin’ On A Prayer,” “The Boys Are Back In Town,” “Where Are You Now,” “Step In Time,” “One Day More” and “Happy Together.” Along with providing a wide range of music, Ray said she chose songs that would transition well to the stage. “We really tried to pick songs that we knew would go over well in a show setting,” she said. The winner of Thursday’s show was originally announced to be ‘Liberty’,  but after a recount, the group with the best theme of the night was ‘Happiness’. Singarama will finish its run with two performances on Saturday. The first show takes place at 2 p.m. The final performance is at 7:30 p.m and the overall winner of Singarama will be announced at...

The 53rd annual Singarama show kicked off in Collins Alumni Auditorium Thursday night after a late start due to the Bisons Atlantic Sun tournament game. The theme of this year’s shows is “Life,” “Liberty,” and the pursuit of “Happiness.” The three shows were judged based on the quality of their theme Thursday evening and will be judged on other categories throughout the weekend. The show titles included “The Best Day of Your Life,” directed by Emily Ann Ray; “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Deck,” directed by John Blake Parker; and “Chasing Happiness,” directed by Rachel Grayson. “Liberty” won the award for best theme. “It feels great,” freshman Keri Koster said of their “Liberty” performance. “We just followed through and showed the theme through song and dance.” The next three shows for Singarama are Friday night at 7:30 p.m., Saturday Matinee at 2 p.m. and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.     Photos by Becca...
Thomas Rhett, wife Lauren discuss faith at The Gathering

Thomas Rhett, wife Lauren discuss faith at The Gathering

They came to discuss fame, music and world travels. But more than that, Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren Gregory came to The Gathering Tuesday morning to discuss their faith story and how God uses them in the industry to which they were called. “We could not be more opposite,” Gregory said. “I’m often asking God ‘why in the world you put me with him in this career.’ Everything I thought I would be doing is absolutely not what is going on in my life right now, but it’s so cool because no matter what we do, it’s very evident to me that God has us right where he wants us. “That makes me feel good – knowing that He’s walking us through it and that it’s for His glory and not for ours.” Rhett and his wife began their love story in the first grade. While he always chased a life centered around music, Lauren earned a nursing degree and had dreams of serving people across the world. Little did she know that God had other plans for the direction of their life together. “It’s become a new normal for us,” she said. “It’s cool to be able to support him and see how God has taken him from this super-cool, emo, black hair kid in middle school doing the ‘High Heeled Flip Flops’ band to opening up for Jason Aldean this year. “It’s obvious that God has put him in this industry for a reason. And as long as He just keeps putting the stepping stones in front of him and us as a couple, we’re just...
