Resurrection Week begins with Tuesday’s Gathering

Resurrection Week begins with Tuesday’s Gathering

To kick off Resurrection Week, presenter Chris Smith addressed The Gathering Tuesday morning. “Our inheritance and ourselves are guarded through faith and salvation,” he said. “Through this we rejoice, even if for a little while. Jesus admits the legitimacy of our suffering but He tells us that it’s for a little while and not forever. “Our story has a happy ending.” Smith began with the discussion of abundant life, mercy and grace and how these things relate to the gifts God has given His people. Smith said that everyone at some point will be disappointed in life, but reminded students that God’s mercy is a guarded gift. “This is an inheritance,” he said. “Kept in heaven for you. You are being protected by the power of God.” Smith used an example from Les Misèrables. A theif steals the silverware from a respected bishop and gets caught. This man is brought to the bishop but instead of throwing this man in jail, he shows mercy and tells the guards that the man took what was his and actually “forgot the candlesticks” as well. This changes the thief’s life. This extension of mercy changed the projection of a life. “By God’s great mercy, He has given us a new birth,” Smith said. According to Smith, everyone wants a do-over, no matter who they are or what they have done. There is always a moment in which people pray for a chance to prove themselves again. While a do-over is rare in the secular world, God has given His people a do-over, a fresh start to begin again. “Hope means means confidant...

As I’ve stepped into campaigning and the conversation revolving around SGA president specifically, I’m coming to see more of why the Lord was pushing me in that way. “More specifically, I’m running for SGA president because I have a huge heart for the Lipscomb student body, and I love seeing things being united and restored and people coming together for the same reason. I think one of the coolest opportunities I had this past year as the SGA Spiritual Life Committee Chair was being able to plan events on campus to see students from all different diverse backgrounds come together on campus when...
Baseball loses weekend series against North Florida, 2-1

Baseball loses weekend series against North Florida, 2-1

Lipscomb had its first home-conference weekend against North Florida, but Lipscomb’s bats didn’t get started until Sunday afternoon. In the first game of the series on Friday nothing seemed to be going Lipscomb’s way. The Bisons fell behind in the top first and were never able to battle back. Starting pitcher Brady Puckett had an unusually rough game. He allowed five runs through seven innings, and eventually Lipscomb went on to lose Friday’s contest 11-1. “This is not the way you want to start off any series,” Jeff Forehand, Lipscomb baseball head coach said. “We got off to a rough start and just couldn’t turn it around.” This game started much different for Lipscomb as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead by the end of the 3rd inning, but it wouldn’t last. UNF battled back and it was capped off by a 3-run 7th inning. “This was a tough loss, because we were leading for most of the game, and even after they came back and tied it we were still looking good,” Forehand said. “But it didn’t go our way. We were a hit or two away from it being a different story. This was just one of those games where they played better than we did.” UNF finished game two with double-digit hits for the third straight game. They went on to win game two, 7-5. The Bisons turned to junior pitcher Dayton Tripp to avoid a sweep by the Ospreys. Tripp was coming off a poor performance in his last start as he gave up seven runs in just .1 innings against USC Upstate last weekend. Tripp bounced back...

Lumination Radio provides entertainment for listeners while rewarding contributors

Lipscomb students contribute to the on-campus radio station Lumination Radio to produce content varying from music to sports, finding their work paid off in a sense of achievement. Senior Anna McClure, Lumination Radio’s program director, oversees the schedule for the 24/7 radio station. She spends a lot of her time working with music, people who want to make a podcast and both live broadcasts of The Gathering and sports events. “I love being a part of the live broadcasts that we do,” McClure said. “Seeing everyone come together to produce a broadcast is incredibly rewarding. It’s been one of the most rewarding aspects of my role as program director.” Senior Sports Director KJ Lauck puts together groups for each sports broadcast and works with athletics to execute each game. Lauck said he shares similar feelings toward the broadcasts. “My favorite thing about broadcasting is preparing for the game and doing research, and then being able to use that during a game,” Lauck said. “It’s a feeling of accomplishment.” There is a wide range of people that contribute to these broadcasts, some that are even outside the Communications department. “I’ve called games with people from different majors like English, and it was smooth,” Lauck says. “Everyone who wants to participate can participate. There are no exceptions.” Radio Assistant Wayne Campbell oversees all production of the radio station. Campbell noted that he sees a lot of talent and good content through Lumination Radio. “I’m always proud when our students win awards for their work — and there have been several in the past couple of months; but I’m never prouder than when...
Softball takes 2/3 in series against Stetson

Softball takes 2/3 in series against Stetson

The Lipscomb Lady Bisons (27-11) hosted their first ASUN conference series at home this weekend against The Stetson Hatters (23-9), garnering 14 hits in the final match. Lipscomb played two road series against ASUN conference opponents (USC Upstate, Jacksonville) on the road this season, going 3-3. Sophomore third baseman Sarah Higgins was red hot the past two games getting six hits in her last seven at bats with one homer, 4 RBI’s and two runs scored. “Sarah has had so many quality at bats lately,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “She’s gotten solid barrel to the ball. I felt like she was getting solid barrel to the ball in the games before this weekend — she just couldn’t catch a break, so its good to finally see her get some breaks and hit those holes.” The Lady Bison’s weekend got off to a rough start as they were shut out in a 2-0 extra-inning loss to Stetson in the first game of the series. Lipscomb had been shut out in the previous two games leading up to this game. Before last week, Lipscomb hadn’t been shutout all season in 36 games. Despite the team’s offensive struggles, it didn’t stop sophomore pitcher Mandy Jordan from having a stellar performance, pitching all eight innings and only giving up one earned run and striking out 11. In the second game of Saturday’s double header, the Lady Bison’s were able to break the 22-inning shutout streak when Higgins hit a two-run homer. Lipscomb scored three more runs in the game off nine hits, going on to win 5-3. In the series finale Sunday morning,...
‘Totally Awesome’ wins big at Singarama 2017

‘Totally Awesome’ wins big at Singarama 2017

After collecting the previous three awards presented at Singarama this weekend, “Totally Awesome” took home a third-consecutive win after Saturday night’s performance at “A Blast From The Past.” Thursday night the group took home the award for Best Theme; Friday evening the group won for Best Music and won Saturday afternoon for Best Staging. Saturday night at the last showing of Singarama, the show collected the fourth and final award available: Sweepstakes. “Winning all four like that hasn’t happened in five years,” assistant director of “Totally Awesome” senior Reese Lusk said. “We knew our show was good. We just didn’t know it was that good.” One unique thing about “Totally Awesome” is that 70 percent of the show’s composition featured new actors, students that have never been a part of Singarama before this year. “Training this bunch of newbies was a challenge at times,” Lusk said. “There were late nights, hard nights. But we really worked hard to break down a lot of those barriers and eventually became a team. “The other shows were amazing. We were stunned with what we saw. I’m just honored to have been an assistant director of this.” “Totally Awesome” was directed by junior Bethany Rowland, a directing major at Lipscomb. According to Lusk, no matter how late or hard a rehearsal was, Rowland never lost sight of her vision and the direction of the show. “Bethany is probably one of the best directors Singarama has ever seen,” he said. According to Rowland, a Singarama show originally made her want to attend Lipscomb after she visited during her junior year of high school. Now having directed “Totally Awesome,”...
