The Lipscomb volleyball team swept North Florida 3-0 Sunday afternoon in Allen Arena, clinching a share of the Atlantic Sun Volleyball regular season title. This win also secured a first round bye in the 2015 A-Sun Volleyball Championship which will be played at Lipscomb Nov. 19-21. Lipscomb volleyball head coach Brandon Rosenthal said the wins are meaningful at this point in the season. “Down the stretch every win is huge,” Rosenthal said. “Every win gives us a chance to control our own destiny. It also puts pressure on other teams in our conference.” Lipscomb took the first set 25-17. The win was due to a team effort in blocking. The Bisons took the second set 25-23 thanks to a clutch point by freshman Carly Nusbaum. Nusbaum led the Bisons with 11 kills. A huge key for the Bisons was blocks in the match. Lipscomb had 11 blocks compared to only eight by North Florida. Lipscomb took the third set 25-22. Lipscomb will play two games on the road against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson before the tournament. “We are going to have to keep adding pressure,” Rosenthal said. “These games matter because we want to carry momentum into the tournament. We do not want to let up.” Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

The Atlantic Sun preseason polls project a sixth place finish for the Lady Bisons basketball team this season. “I think experience is huge in basketball,” head coach Greg Brown said. “When we get to the point our seniors can teach the freshmen, I think it changes the culture of how we do things as a team.” Lipscomb had trouble rebounding last year, which lead to an unsuccessful scoring season. Brown expressed why he thinks this year will be different and how having five players over six-foot-tall will help in this area. “Not only will size help, but the mentality of the team will make a difference,” he said. “I believe we will see some return on investment there by focusing on this aspect with our team.” Senior Ashley Southern was named to the preseason Atlantic Sun All-Conference team alongside nine other NCAA players. “I think the biggest strength for this team will be each other,” Southern said. “The key I believe will be how to make each other better.” The Lady Bisons will open up their regular season Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. against Loyola in Allen Arena. After a fifth place finish last season, the Atlantic Sun preseason polls have the Bisons ranked fourth for the upcoming basketball season. “I think it’s a fair placement,” head coach Casey Alexander said. “It shows that people think we have a chance to be good and have a solid team.” Junior Josh Williams was one of six selections for the preseason All-Atlantic Sun team. He averaged 16.9 points per game last season and 4.9 rebounds per game. “Preseason nominations and awards are a reflection of what happened the year before,” Alexander said. “Josh had a great year last year. He was an All-Conference player so quite naturally with him coming back he’s going to get that recognition.” North Flordia defeated the Bisons in the first conference tournament last season and went on to take first place in the Atlantic Sun tournament. Preseason polls have North Florida ranked first place going into the 2016 season. “Everyone knows preseason polls and nominations are fun and it’s great to gauge yourself to other teams, but all that matters is the results at the end of the season,” Alexander said. “We still have to play the games.” Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

It isn’t every day that a Hollywood star visits Lipscomb’s campus, but Friday night Into the Woods’ MacKenzie Mauzy did just that. Mauzy played Rapunzel in the latest film adaption of the show alongside Meryl Streep, Chris Pine and Anna Kendrick. Because of a long-standing friendship between Mauzy and Lipscomb’s Contemporary Music program founder Charlie Peacock, he extended an invitation for her to visit campus. “Being close to director Scott Baker, Beki Baker and Dean Mike Fernandez from the [College of Entertainment and the Arts], it seemed only right that I share with them that I know one of the stars of Into The Woods – the real Rapunzel so to speak,” Peacock said. “So I called her and MacKenzie graciously accepted our invitation.” One aspect of the mission of the College of Entertainment and the Arts at Lipscomb is to bring the industry to campus. Mauzy is an award-winning television and film actress. While on campus, Mauzy attended the President’s reception for the play, watched the production from the audience and participated in a discussion with cast and crew following Friday evening’s performance. “It’s very valuable for our students to see someone succeeding in the industry to which they aspire,” Baker said. “Ms. Mauzy has a background in theater and she continues to use her talents working in musicals, film and stage work. “It’s the kind of model we enjoy putting in front of our students.” After Friday’s performance of Into the Woods, Mauzy joined the cast and crew for a Q&A session with the audience. Mauzy discussed the audition process for the film, how it’s opened up several...

Lipscomb’s volleyball team came away with a 3-0 victory over Jacksonville on senior night Friday in Allen Arena. For seniors Jewell Dobson, Brittnay Estes, and Molly Spitznagle, all tri-captains, it was their last regular season home game. “All three of these girls have played significant roles throughout their careers,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “It is more than the sheer number of kills, blocks and digs. The thing I reflect upon more importantly is the legacy they are leaving us with. They are a major part of not just being successful but they are a major part of taking this program to the next level.” The seniors combined for 30 of the team’s 50 kills during senior night’s game. “I look at all three and I have to use the word ‘awesome’ because I think it is the right word when you look at all three and their contributions,” Rosenthal said. “When they arrived here we were around the top 100 in the country. Now we are in the top 50.” Coming into this season, Estes was selected for Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year. “From day one you knew Brittnay was going to go out there and give you her absolute best,” Rosenthal said. “Brittnay has matured into an unbelievable leader. She has been the heartbeat of this team and the heartbeat of the program.” Dobson was selected for the preseason award last season, a year after winning the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year in 2013. Spitznagle was selected to the Atlantic Sun First Team All Conference last season. Estes and Dobson have been the best duo...

International ambassadors, investigators and military officers gathered as one panel in Lipscomb’s Ezell Center Thursday, Nov. 5 to discuss with students and community members what it means to have an international career. Hosted by the Tennessee World Affairs Council and Lipscomb’s Department of History, Politics and Philosophy, the event had pver 60 attendees that came to engage in discussion and glean helpful advice on future international jobs and careers. Panelist Colonel Beverly Lee said there are deep rewards that come with international careers. “This is a quote that I love, ‘my deepest fear is that I’ll look back on my life one day and wonder what I did with it,’” Lee said. “And in this type of career, you’ll never have to do that because you’ll know you were busy with humanitarian work and you were busy building cultural relationships with other nations.” Former U.S. Ambassador to Bolivia Charles R. Bowers served as the panel moderator for the evening while the other six panel members spoke on various subjects regarding international careers and jobs. Former U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus Ronald Schlicher was one of the panel members and advised students to take full advantage of opportunities to attend career panels. “Forums like this are really great. When I was at the University of Tennessee back in 1979, I didn’t have anything like this,” Schlicher said. “So, when I thought about the Foreign Service, I kind of had to concentrate on the theoretical aspects of it and those are important and compelling, but they’re not the whole story.” Schlicher spoke about both the pros and cons of working in the...
