School of Music receives All-Steinway dedication

Lipscomb’s School of Music officially became an “All-Steinway School” on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Sally Coveleskie of Steinway & Sons recognized the college during a dedication ceremony in Ward Hall. “The pursuit and achievement of excellence is evident here,” Coveleskie said as she presented the award to University President Randy Lowry. “What you have done by inspiring the Steinway Initiative will assist the students of Lipscomb University to reach their fullest potential as musicians and teachers.” The Steinway Initiative demonstrates a commitment to excellence by providing students and faculties with the best equipment possible for the study of music. Coveleskie said that future generations of music students will thank Lipscomb “both publicly and silently” for its work in the Steinway Initiative and for accomplishing this goal. “We were encouraged to look at this move in terms of the excellence of the institution,” Lowry said. “As we think about Lipscomb and as we think about this particular moment, I’m reminded that we can’t be a great university if we don’t have good art, music and theatre.  I believe the arts are so important and we have made progress over the last 10 years.” During the dedication ceremony, Eugene and Elisabeth Pridonoff (the Pridonoff Duo), both former professors of music at University of Cincinnati, performed a two-piano recital. The performance included pieces from W.A. Mozart, Franz Liszt, Astor Piazzolla and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Director of the School of Music Dr. Sally Reid thanked the School of Music and its students for their hard work and commitment to the department. “This is a combination of a lot of work by a lot of people and it is a statement of who we are and...

Sophomore Joe Kerridge and senior Anthony Cedano picked up assists on the score. “Logan has done a great job for us this year,” Morrow said. “He really came out strong for us in the spring. Lipscomb volleyball takes down Belmont rival 3-2

Lipscomb volleyball defeated Belmont 3-2 Tuesday night in Allen Arena during volleyball’s Battle of the Boulevard. Belmont took Lipscomb through a five-set match for the second time this season. Tuesday’s victory gave the Bison volleyball team a 13-12 all-time series advantage over Belmont. “It’s a great feeling knowing that we are going to go down in history as the first team to lead the all-time series record over Belmont,” senior outside hitter Brittnay Estes said. Estes has been a leader for the Bisons throughout the season. She has led the team in kills for almost every match and led the team Tuesday with 19 kills. “My goal was to just to be an energizer and a team leader,” Estes said. “I knew that was going to be the way I could help our team win.” Although the Bisons emerged victorious, the Bruins fought back and kept the out-of-conference rivalry alive. “This has been a great rivalry for our program,” head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “I’m glad that we are able to keep the rivalry alive even while being in different conferences.” Lipscomb begins the second half of its conference schedule by playing NJIT Saturday, Oct. 24 at 12 p.m in Allen Arena. Students offer help to refugees in Austria

Students offer help to refugees in Austria

A group of students walk into Spar, a grocery store in Vienna, Austria. They take time to scan the store to find out what they need for their mission of mercy: Rice, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, peas, carrots and so on, ingredients for the meal they are going to cook that evening for the thousands of refugees huddled in Vienna’s central train station. After paying for the groceries, it’s time to get to the station. Lipscomb students spending the semester in Vienna, Austria, aren’t blind to the suffering of what surely is one of the largest humanitarian crises of all time: The thousands upon thousands of Syrians who are fleeing their strife-torn homeland. The students studying abroad spend some weekends exploring Europe, but they are also spending other time doing what they can to help the men, women and children who are flooding into Austria in pursuit of sanctuary and peace. Students from Lipscomb and Oklahoma Christian universities have formed the Refugee Aid Committee. They are actively working with Train of Hope, an association made up of volunteers who provide food, clothes and more to the refugees at the station. “There were several of us who went to Frau Swann, our director, and told her we wanted to be involved,” said Morgan DeLong, a sophomore at Oklahoma Christian. “We wanted to help the refugees. Seeing it first-hand kind of motivated a lot of that.” Every day, thousands of refugees come through Vienna’s central station, Hauptbahnhof. Some stay overnight, waiting for family members or for paperwork before continuing the journey.  Rather than staying afraid for their lives in their homeland, they are leaving it all behind to come to Europe, with literally the...
Women’s soccer falls to FGCU 2-1 in first A-Sun loss

Women’s soccer falls to FGCU 2-1 in first A-Sun loss

In an overtime thriller between the top two teams in Atlantic Sun standings, Florida Gulf Coast University defeated Lipscomb women’s soccer 2-1 Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. This match determined which team would be in sole position of first place in the A-Sun and would be in a position to host the next A- Sun tournament. Junior goalkeeper Anna Buhigas recently earned her third career A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out both Jacksonville and North Florida. FGCU junior mid-fielder Yazmin Velez beat Buhigas with her left foot in the 43rd minute off an assist from FGCU junior Ali Rogers to open the scoring. It looked as if one goal would be all that FGCU would need until Lipscomb scored a shot by senior defender Alex Hickey, who had just entered the match as a sub, in the 79th minute. The score remained 1-1 when the match went into overtime. Buhigas, 2014 A-Sun Goalkeeper of the Year, found her matchup against FGCU junior forward Tabby Tindell, 2014 A-Sun Player of the year. This matchup is the one that ended the game. Exactly seven minutes into the first overtime period, Tindell connected on a pass that sent a rocket into the upper-left corner of the net for the game winning goal. “She made a great run, and was in the right place at the right time,” redshirt sophomore defender Niamh Rawlins said.
