Set during the Civil War, the Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s production of “Henry V” spins the classic historical drama in a new way. At the top of the show, the stage is set with a burned down farmhouse occupied by soldiers, nurses and owners of the farm. One returning Union soldier joins his Confederate brother on stage while the owner of the house and a slave woman sit to the side with a copy of “Henry V.” “The owner of the house and the slave begin to read from the book and those of us in the camp have to decide when we play along and why,” senior acting major Brooke Ferguson said. “It’s such a cool idea.” The director of the show, Nat McIntyre, felt that the state of Tennessee during the Civil War was split down the middle between the Confederate soldiers and the Union. His artistic decision to tell this story as part of the Civil War era was his way of bringing a divided family, and thus a divided state, together. “I love the direction that Nat took the play by setting it in the Civil War, while not having the actual events of the play happen during the War,” senior acting/directing major Jonah Jackson said. “I think it is a great way to frame this story that is ultimately about the hope for peace and reconciliation.” Lipscomb students involved with the show include Ferguson, Jackson and senior acting major Scout Pittman. Jackson plays John Bates, an English soldier and The French Duke of Bourbon. Pittman portrays Katherine, the French princess and Ferguson plays Bishop No....

Lipscomb women’s soccer defeated Chattanooga 3-0 Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. With this game, the Lady Bisons have played six straight games without giving up a goal against opponents. “I am impressed with the way this team has jelled,” head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “Hopefully they will continue to improve.” Freshman Brooke Brenner scored the only goal for the Bisons in the first half of the 13th minute. The goal was assisted by sophomore Elizabeth Ashwood, who played the ball across the Chattanooga backline. UTC’s Katie Emig made several stops, but Lipscomb continued to aggressively pound the net in the second half. In the 64th minute, senior Caroline Chadwell scored the second goal of the game and was assisted by freshman Maycie McKay. Freshman Lindsay Brent scored the third goal of the game in the 77th minute. Sophomore Emily Rogers assisted the goal. O’Brien said he was very happy with the balance of veteran and young players contributing to the game. “This makes our entire program more competitive,” O’Brien said. “It shows that our players genuinely care about each other and they have a great spirit, which makes it an awesome group to coach.” Lipscomb women’s soccer will take on Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Lady Bisons remain undefeated this season after a 3-1 win over the Pepperdine Waves, extending their winning streak to five matches. Tension filled Allen Arena as the Lipscomb Invitational got its second stream of matches underway. Both teams came into the match undefeated after wins against Ball State and Florida Atlantic. After a slow start in a tense first set, the Bisons regained composure. “We came together at the beginning and we were pushing and pushing, but Pepperdine is so calm when they play and they keep going and digging balls, which deflated us a bit during the second set,” senior Brittnay Estes said. “We then realized that we have to play our way, which is energetic, exciting, screaming and pushing when we win points.” The Lady Bisons lost some momentum during the latter stages of the second set, but bounced back and won the match (25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23). Lipscomb played their first home match of the season this Friday afternoon, defeating Ball State 3-1. The Bisons will prepare for their final match of the Lipscomb Invitational against Florida Atlantic at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. “We are going to get a lot of rest, some video analysis and come out intense playing our away and that’s the way we are going to win games,” Estes said. The Lady Bisons continued to dominate their season after defeating the Ball State Cardinals 3-1 for the Lipscomb Invitational on Friday afternoon in Allen Arena. Ball State came out firing, winning the tightly contested first set. The Bisons regained composure and momentum to defeat the Cardinals. “We served a lot better throughout the match — they are a tough defensive team and applied a lot of defensive pressure to us,” head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. The Lady Bisons started their quest with a 3-0 record for the first time in program history, after defeating the No. 46 CSUN Matadors, No. 97 Idaho State Bengals and No. 37 Utah Utes over the weekend. “We came out with a really good attitude protecting our house and didn’t let last weekend affect us,” senior Jewell Dobson said. “We built on the momentum. It’s also good when you have a lot of players on the team who can put the ball away. I think with every game we keep learning how to keep composure and finish games.” The three other schools competing in the Lipscomb Invitational include Ball State University, Florida Atlantic University and Pepperdine University. FAU and Ball State will face each other at 5 p.m. followed by the Lady Bison’s who will play Pepperdine at 7:30 p.m. “Ultimately it comes down to the girls — when they are ready to go after rest and switch gears,” Rosenthal said. “We are going to need to apply pressure early — I think we waited a little too late in that first match. Pepperdine is a very efficient team and we’re going to have to play our own game...

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team secured a 2-1 victory against the No. 10-ranked Xavier Musketeers at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex Thursday night. This match gave the team its first-ever win against a top-ten team in program history. Xavier began the scoring on a penalty kick in the 20th minute by senior Alex Ridsdale. This would be all Xavier scored during the rest of the game. For Lipscomb, junior Daniel Vieira scored the first goal in the 23rd minute followed by 25-yard goal from sophomore Ivan Alvarado in the 27th minute. Lipscomb entered the second half with strong defense as Xavier fought for control of the ball. While Xavier had many opportunities during the second half, the team failed to capitalize when it mattered most. “We challenge our players’ skills and we specifically challenge their mentality,” head coach Charles Morrow said. “I thought our players’ responses tonight were world-class.” Later in the second half, a red card was thrown on behalf of sophomore midfielder Jonathon Ramirez of Lipscomb and Matt Nance of Xavier; the two were ejected from the game. “I did not think it was a very physical game,” Morrow said. “It was an emotional game. Quite honestly, I thought the referees got a little too caught up in the emotion of the game, though I will need to look back at the film.” With 24 minutes left in the game, a weather delay paused play for several minutes. Sophomore midfielder Eduardo Reza later preserved the Bisons victory in the 83rd minute after he intercepted a kick with his head.
