It’s the last newscast of the 2014-2015 school year, and Sarah McGee and Madeline Montgomery lead the show with the latest Lipscomb and Nashville headlines. Mignonne Bryant takes us around the world in World News, Tom Jones has the weather, Carly Bergthold provides the Hollywood scoop and Gemikal Prude gives national and local sports updates. Lumination’s Tom Jones has the latest on changes for the men’s basketball team, and Leslie Newman has the story on Lipscomb’s first ever Goatfest which involved Metro Police, a bouncy house and goats, but all for a good cause. A Lipscomb faculty member had the honor of translating prisoner of war letters from World War II. Lumination’s Colleen Casner had the chance to talk with Prof. Charlie McVey about what he discovered from the letters. The student body has spoken and the Student Government Association’s new president and vice president said they are ready to deliver. Jordan Beale, a junior biochemistry major from Benton, Kentucky, was recently voted the new president of SGA after a close race with junior Julia Allen. “I was confident in my platform, but my competition was so good and the race was so close that it was such a toss up,” Beale said. “It’s really neat to look forward to something so big and so cool — I see so much potential and believe it’s going to be a great year.” As president, Beale will be in charge of calling and planning meetings along with taking charge of any proposals. She already has several plans for what she wants to personally accomplish next year. One of her main goals is improve the academic advising system. “I would love to see each student be designated two advisors — one from their department and one from the Career Development Center who’s just really focused on seeing you succeed as a student,” Beale said. Beale will be working closely on accomplishing these goals with vice president Hannah Passamonte, a junior social entrepreneurship and international business major from Maui, Hawaii. Both leaders already have one goal in mind to work on together – a tuition lock-in. Passamonte’s other plans include combating food waste in the cafeteria and even trying to improve parking. Junior marketing major Michael Oruma is better known as Mic-O on campus as he aims to be a positive reflection to his audiences through his music. “I try to be a positive light with my music and encourage others,” Oruma said. Oruma is releasing his new EP “Light of the World” that includes a collection of songs he said he believes will be an inspiration to listeners. Oruma said he does not want to be another face that can sing or play an instrument, but he wants his music to show his personality. His musical roots came from his father, who taught him how to play the keyboard at a young age. From that moment, Oruma said he knew he wanted to do something with music. Oruma said he does not place himself in any musical category because he wants to be able to perform anywhere, but his beliefs do play a major role in his music. “My music is positive music that comes from a Christian background,” Oruma said. It was almost a perfect conclusion to an already special weekend for the Lipscomb softball team — almost. After winning the first two games of the three-game conference series on Saturday, the Lady Bisons were upended by the North Florida Ospreys 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Draper Diamond at Smith Field. Despite a late rally in the sixth and seventh innings, the Lady Bisons came up short in the end of the last game. “We did a good job late in the game with runners on, but not early in the game,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “It stinks that six runs is not enough. I think we should have capitalized on some things earlier in the game but we didn’t.” Lipscomb had no problem getting on base, as they recorded nine hits total, but couldn’t quite finish the job when they needed to. “We can’t leave bases loaded twice in the first five innings,” Ryman said. “That was a killer.” Despite the loss on Sunday, Ryman was optimistic about the two wins on Saturday. “We’re at the point of the season where every game matters,” Ryman said. “That is a positive takeaway.” The Lady Bisons were led offensively by senior Paige Neely and freshman Abby Fenichel who each had three hits while junior Baylee Williams added two of her own. Williams and junior Brittany Elmore also led the way with two RBI’s a piece. In the circle, junior Kelly Young was accredited with the loss. Despite defeating the No. 1 team in the nation last week, the Lipscomb baseball team came up short losing the series to the University of North Florida this weekend at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The Bisons lost the first game of the series 4-3. They took the second game 11-3, but lost the final game Sunday 8-0. “I have to give credit to North Florida as they showed all weekend that they could hit,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. “They made it very difficult for us and in the end we didn’t get the job done.” Forehand went on to talk about the outstanding pitching performance by UNF. “When a team pitches that well and makes great runs it’s difficult to get into the game. If we don’t get a run through, we can’t really play the game.” This is the first home series Lipscomb has dropped since the weekend of April 26, 2013 when Stetson came in and took 2-of-3. North Florida senior Trent Higginbothem, gave the Ospreys the initial lead hitting his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot in the third inning. UNF pitcher Matt Vaka allowed only a couple of hits and three walks in five innings, in the final stage of the series. Throughout the whole afternoon, Vaka only allowed three runners to move into scoring position, which lowered his ERA to 1.72 for the season. The only chance the Bisons gave themselves to score was in the sixth inning when Josh Lee lead by drawing a one-out walk to give Lipscomb a scoring opportunity.
