The men’s social club Sigma Iota Delta brought live music and goats for the first ever Goatfest that was held on the quad Thursday night. The event had students performing, a moon bounce, Nine Square, food and even a mini petting zoo. “I think it’s great,” said senior William Officer. “It’s different from most Lipscomb events. It’s a very chill atmosphere.” Several students said they liked the music-festival like atmosphere, but there was more than just what met the eye. “Not only is it fun but we’re also raising money for a great cause,” said Colton Whiteside, a SID member and Lipscomb senior. That great cause is Open Table Nashville, a local non-profit organization that disrupts cycles of poverty, works with the marginalized and provides education on homelessness. Open Table has had a Southern cooking and music festival on campus for the last four years. The money raised at these events has helped feed homeless people as well as help educate the community about the homeless population. This is a new way for the non-profit to raise money on campus. Goatfest doubled as the club’s philanthropy event, raising $1,700 and it also served as a drug and alcohol awareness event. To raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving, SID hosted several Nashville Police officers that brought along fatal vision goggles to do field sobriety tests on students. The goggles simulate different levels of inebriation and show how alcohol affects vision. “Drunk drivers are everywhere,” Officer Jerry Bell said. “It’ll get you kicked out of school, it costs about $5,000, you lose your license and you can serve...

After several firsts, singer-songwriter Kelsea Ballerini visited the place where her country roots were nurtured. This former Lipscomb student headlined Student Government Association’s 2015 Spring Concert to a very familiar crowd Wednesday night in Shamblin Theater. “I always dreamed about being an artist and songwriter and doing it for a living, but did not know how to do it,” Ballerini said. But it didn’t take her long to figure out how, as she recently cracked the charts with her song “Love Me Like You Mean It” that debuted in November 2014. This Knoxville, Tennessee native moved to Music City to kick off her career when she was 15 years old, and she landed at Lipscomb several years later. “[Being at Lipscomb] was two of my favorite years of my entire life,” she said. “The whole time I would just go to school and then go to the writer’s round to co-write. I kept trying to do both at the same time until I found the right opportunity.” Just halfway through her sophomore year at Lipscomb, Ballerini signed a deal with Black River Publishing. Her career took off from there, as she debuted on one of country music’s most famous stages — the Grand Ole Opry. Ballerini said the last few months have been nothing but firsts. After hearing her own song on the radio, her music got in the hands of some of her biggest inspirations. “One of the craziest things that’s happening is people that I’m fans of are becoming friends and reaching out, and kind of speaking into my life and helping me,” she said. Most recently, this rising star...

Lipscomb’s campus experienced a whole new world this week. Sponsored by Lipscomb’s intercultural development department, the second annual Welcome to Our Worlds Week celebrated different cultures on campus. “This week is to encourage camaraderie amongst students and kind of get them out of their comfort zone,” said Mariah Lester, vice president of Kappa Iota Theta. KIT’s talent show kicked off the week showcasing performances from mimes to dancers. Tino Liu, a freshman who performed a Jason Mraz mashup, said that there was one thing that united all cultures during the week. “It’s really all about spreading love,” said Liu. “Everyone needs a little bit of love, so spread it.” WOW week also put a spotlight on flags from around the world outside the student center. Thursday afternoon food trucks lined the Allen Arena mall so that students could try food from different cultures. “It’s cool to see different kinds of food on campus,” sophomore Karli Whitson said. “It brings people out and about on campus.” The trucks brought in the community and broke up the normal food court options. “I am slightly overwhelmed with all the choices, but it’s exciting to have options,” senior Matt Brown said. “I was going to eat at Au Bon Pain, but then I saw food trucks, so that’s a nice change of pace.” Other activities for the week like live music, fashion and dancing allowed for unusual opportunities for students. “It [WOW week] helps students get engaged in the community and helps them learn about the different cultures at Lipscomb,” Lester...

Service Day draws in a number of students every year; some students hope to earn three chapel credits, while others simply want to help and explore the community. “It’s just a really cool way to get to know the Nashville community and go out and serve in a place that I’ve never been before,” junior Diana Proffitt said. Students signed up to serve at various locations such as the Nashville Public Library and the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief. The Churches of Christ is a non-profit organization that works to provide food, water and supplies to those in need following a disaster. “I saw a family, I don’t know how long they hadn’t eaten, hadn’t drunk fresh water, but I do know they took it right off the truck, they walked right over to their tailgate of their truck, opened it up, and a man fed his family,” operations director Ralph Coles said. Student volunteers took a tour of the main warehouse to learn more about how the organization was serving others. “I really like this facility. I think it’s great to be at a place that has a faith-based aspect to it,” junior Becky Sale said. “You know, to hear about the Churches of Christ and how they’re helping out communities all across the nation.” On any given day, more than 200 volunteers will come to the warehouse to pack food boxes for those in need. About 27,000 food boxes are shipped out yearly. On Service Day, Lipscomb students packed wash cloths into boxes. “We don’t think much about a bar of soap and a wash cloth, but when you’ve...

A game that called for extra innings against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga didn’t end up in the favor of the Lady Bisons as they took a 7-4 loss at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium Wednesday night. Lipscomb showed they were ready to play by getting the first three possible outs, leaving the first inning tied. At the bottom of the third, junior Brittany Elmore hit a double bringing senior Brianne Welch home to get things going in Lipscomb’s favor with a 1-0 start. The momentum the Lady Bisons built from defense was answered through their offense, bringing the score 2-1 at the bottom of the fifth. Lipscomb extended its lead 4-1 in the sixth, but the Lady Mocs brought the game to a tie. The innings were left scoreless until the ninth, when the Lady Bisons were back at bat with an opposing score of 7-4 lurking over them. With nine total strikeouts compared to Chattanooga’s one, the Lady Bisons weren’t able to keep the momentum in their favor. Lipscomb softball will hold a “Celebration of 20 Years of Lipscomb Softball” this weekend as they take on North Florida in an Atlantic Sun series. Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...
