Junior graphic design major Scott Coffey gets to combine his love of art, writing and math in an unusual way. “The first real board game that I bought was Settlers of Catan, and that was in high school,” Coffey said. “Ever since then, I’ve really loved playing and making games.” Coffey has created multiple board game prototypes with creative premises. One game is called Cat Fight, which is set up like a reality show, and the goal is to get the most fame in the end. Another game is named The End, where the players try to be the first to end the world. Coffey also receives college credit for his board game designs in his independent study in the graphic design major. His most recent development is Quiver — a game that came from an idea he had while studying abroad in England in 2013. “Everyone in the game is an archer, and the goal is to score the most points in an archery contest,” Coffey said. In the comical game, players have to shoot past different obstacles, and each obstacle gives the players a different amount of points. Coffey is designing the entire game himself and said he wants to develop it so that it can be sold to a publisher. This process includes creating the rules, play testing and designing the artwork. “I’m hoping to get the deck of cards for the game professionally printed so that I can possibly take it to a publisher,” Coffey said. The game has 108 cards in the deck, and there are 75 unique illustrations on the cards. One card...

Stephen Warnik knows the importance of Nashville’s greenways. “I come here [to the Bells Bend trail] daily,” Warnik said. “As long as it’s above 32 degrees you’ll find me out here making the most of these beautiful trails. You just cannot beat it.” Warnik, a Nashville resident, said that the greenways are a daily escape from his routine. Nashville is doing its part to help residents live healthier lifesyles by seeking to expand the number of greenways in Davidson county. There are currently 190 miles of trails throughout the county. Greenways are linear parks and paths that link schools, shopping areas, offices and parks within a community. Not only do the greenways provide benefits of recreation but also conserve green space and provide a green system of transportation. Nashville’s greenways are built by Metro Parks and supported by the non-profit group, Greenways for Nashville. The greenways provide opportunities for biking, hiking, running and exploring trails and anyone. The greenways are located all over the city, with a goal of having a greenway trail within two miles of every community. Lipscomb students have easy access to the the greenways, as the Forest Hills trail is less than a mile from campus. Students can walk just under a mile to get to the entrance on Hillsboro Pike. This provides students with a safe and convenient opportunity to adventure and see another side of Nashville. There is also nearby Woodmont Park greenway, which is located off of Woodmont Boulevard. “It’s so peaceful out here [on the greenways],” Warnik said. “Sometimes I will see people and other times it will be just me and God’s...

For some, balancing work and hobbies may be a lot to handle, but for one Lipscomb student, selling the products of two hobbies is her job. Freshman Jamie Pratt got her first taste of photography when she was young and quickly developed a love for being behind the camera. She eventually reached out to assist other Nashville photographers, which lead to photographing weddings. While this was something entirely new to Pratt, she realized she had uncovered a new passion. “[Wedding photography] wasn’t my end goal, but they are probably one of my favorite things to shoot,” Pratt said. “It’s just such a fun atmosphere and there’s so many different aspects to take pictures of.” Pratt’s photography business took off from there, as she built her client base and sold more of her work. She decided to put her photographic talent on display by building a website. Aside from photographing weddings and snapping candids, Pratt said she also enjoys landscape photography. “Capturing that moment with nature or something and getting that split second, where, if you’d waited a little longer, the picture wouldn’t have turned out,” she said. Since Pratt launched her website, more photos having been selling and business is picking up. Pratt’s talent doesn’t stop with photography, though. She also sells paintings and hand-painted shoes. Pratt said that she did not know she could paint until her senior year in high school. She said her paintings are usually inspired by photos she has taken or places she has been. “I just like the things that have little details,” she said. “It’s always humbling when I can never get them...
