The Lipscomb baseball team defeated Tennessee Tech 7-1 on the rainy Tuesday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The Bisons were down 1-0 early, due to a home run by the Golden Eagles’ designated hitter Ryan Flick. This run by Flick was the only one Tennessee Tech got the entire game. But it didn’t take long for Lipscomb to answer with a run-scoring double by senior Jonathan Allison in the bottom of the third. The tie of 1-1 didn’t break until the bottom of the fifth. Lipscomb freshman Jeffrey Crisan helped break the tie by getting a sacrifice fly to right field. He was not the only freshman to have a good day at the plate. Freshman Michael Gigliotti had three runs and said that getting those runs and RBI’s were all about his mindset. “Bunting to me is religious,” Gigliotti said. “I work on bunting as much as hitting. When you have speed, it is a great tool to get on base and score some runs.” Gigliotti now has six bunt base hits on the season. Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand said that he was proud of Gigliotti’s and the other team member’s contributions, whether it was on the field or at the plate. Several Lipscomb communication and journalism students took away Best of South awards at the Southeast Journalism Conference in Atlanta, Georgia last weekend. Lipscomb took home 13 awards in the competition, which included representatives from more than 30 universities. Months of hard work will soon pay off for students involved in Lipscomb’s 52nd annual Singarama, which opens this Thursday in Collins Alumni Auditorium. This year’s Singarama production is Ready, Set, Go! featuring groups led by student directors Anne Claire Smith, Carolanne Deaton and John Alex Foster. This year’s hosts and hostesses are Delaney Brown, David Austin Lowery, Michael Oruma, Caitlin Phelps, Tyler Russell and McKenna Smith. Aaron Sain is the host and hostesses director. “Go” is the story of a window washer who wants to enter the world of business. It features songs such as “Status Quo” from High School Musical, “Mirrors” by Justin Timberlake and “You Can Go Your Own Way.” Clubs participating in “Go” include Delta Omega, Delta Sigma, Kappa Chi, Sigma Omega Sigma and Tau Phi. Delta Sigma member Laney Overton has especially enjoyed bonding with students from other social clubs. “Being in a social club you sometimes are confined to your social club, and Singarama’s a really great opportunity to branch out and meet new people from other clubs,” Overton said. Students have been working on their shows since January, often practicing five days each week. Frequent practices do not bother Singarama first-timer Tiffany Best, though. “Whenever I’m stressed or busy or upset I can just take my mind off of it and sing my heart out,” Best said. Anna Grace Wolfe of Delta Sigma has also enjoyed the practices but is especially enthusiastic about taking the stage at Singarama for the first time. “I’m excited to be on stage and the moment where we first walk onto the stage,” Wolfe said. The Buckeye State just couldn’t handle the Lipscomb Bisons softball team in the Courtyard by Marriott-Brentwood Purple and Gold Challenge this weekend at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium. After struggling the previous weekend, Lipscomb proved they could face adversity head on and make changes that need to be made. Lipscomb took the field on Saturday morning beating Akron 3-2. In the circle, junior Tanner Sanders had a personal game high with 10 strike-outs. Akron’s pitcher Erin Seller received the loss, making that her second of eight decisions for the year. With a total of three stolen bases, junior Brittany Elmore set a new personal single-game high and a team individual high. The team had a total of five stolen bases, with senior Gracey Aguirre and freshman Abby Fenichel both contributing. “My job on the offensive end is to get on base,” Elmore said. “While I’m on base it’s to put myself in the best position for my team to score me. Stealing bases is part of the process. I’m happy that I can contribute to my team in that way. I always push myself to do more to help the team in any way possible.” Later in the day, Lipscomb faced Dayton, keeping them scoreless. The Bisons finished the game up with a 3-0 win over the Flyers. The records continued to stack up for the Bisons as junior Kelly Young pitched her way to the win by striking out 11, making a new personal and team game high. Meals 2 Heal offers students the opportunity to learn about nutrition and culinary skills while connecting with members of the community as they prepare nourishing meals for cancer patients. Based out of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Green Hills, Meals 2 Heal seeks to prepare and deliver a week’s worth of meals, free of charge, to cancer patients in Davidson and Williamson County. “Although we’re serving meals to people who are currently going through active cancer treatment, it’s not just the meals that are important, it’s the love and the support that we give them — it’s the love that we teach the people in the kitchen,” volunteer coordinator Robin Mizaur said. Meals 2 Heal is a branch of The Heimerdinger Foundation, which was founded following the death of Mike Heimerdinger who lost his battle with cancer in September of 2011. It was during his treatment that the Heimerdinger’s were exposed to the whole-body approach of using nutrition, supplements and alternative treatments along with Chemotherapy. The Heimerdinger Foundation was formed to promote healthier lifestyles and help raise awareness about cancer treatment options. “It’s not just about the food; we’re also hoping that people will make healthy lifestyle changes,” Mizaur said. Founder Kathie Heimerdinger works alongside the volunteers in the kitchen each week and says that each person who contributes to the preparation is an integral part of the process. “I’m just so grateful that we’re here and blessed with the people that walk through our doors and help us produce these unbelievable meals — from our chef to the mentor chefs to the teen volunteers,” Heimerdinger said. The Lipscomb men’s basketball team closed out the 2014-15 season with a 94-75 win over Atlantic Sun Conference foe Kennesaw State Saturday morning in Allen Arena. With a solid start to the first half, the Bisons carried their attacking play with a 47-32 lead as sophomore J.C. Hampton executed a lay up. “I thought for the most part we were really solid — I was proud of their effort and I felt like we really played to win,” Lipscomb’s head coach Casey Alexander said. “We played together, which may sound simple, but things haven’t been going our way and sometimes that’s hard to do.” The Bisons controlled the game as sophomore Josh Williams finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists. “The team came together tonight more than we ever have done this season,” Williams said. “It was great to see a lot of guys contribute to this win. “Rebounding was on point tonight and the guys did really well with their offense but also defense.” Senior Martin Smith came out to the court with an ora of determination for senior night. Smith added 12 points onto the score board. Kennesaw State’s Yonel Brown led all scorers with a 22 points, along with a pair of treys and six free throws.
