Welcome back, fellow Bisons! We’re excited to be back in full swing this spring semester. We were very sad to lose previous Editors-in-Chief Cory Woodroof and Logan Butts, but we are very excited to see where they go in the near future. For now, my name is Erin Turner and I am the new Editor-in-Chief. It is such an honor to follow in the footsteps of Woodroof, Butts and many other wonderful editors. I’m looking forward to carrying on the excellent work that they all did, and I’m very eager for our staff to grow. I’m so excited to share our new staff updates; we have some wonderful talent joining in on the fun. Janice Ng will continue her position as News Director of the Lumination News broadcast. Along her side is Assistant News Director Brianna Langley. As for the radio side of things, Haleigh Ker will continue her position as Program Director and Thomas Jones as Sports Director. For the website, Brianne Welch will continue her great work as Managing Editor, while Jesica Parsley and Erika Thornsberry continue their positions as co-Sports Editors. Following in my steps is Chief Staff Photographer Sam Webb. We have also recently brought on Lana Sydenstricker, who is our new Social Media Manager. We are looking forward to all the fun and excitement that this semester will bring. For junior Ashley Arledge, Alpha Zeta is more than just a social club. Arledge, the club’s president, hopes the club will be something different for girls on campus. “We want to be a different club,” said Arledge. “We’ve decided to call our Pledge Week ‘Declaration Week.’ We want our girls to feel empowered by saying they are declaring to the campus that they are a part of Alpha Zeta.” The new social club was founded just today, and the idea stemmed from Arledge’s first experience with Greek Life at Lipscomb. She knew she wanted to be a part of a social club when she began college, but finding a place that she fit in was harder than expected. “I was looking for more out of college than an education, but to be able to experience that collegiate experience with wonderful Christian people.” After going to the rush fair, open rushes and a few closed rushes, Arledge didn’t feel a connection to any of the social clubs. “I knew I wanted to integrate myself into Lipscomb Campus Life, but I didn’t feel there was a place that I fit. And I think there are other girls on campus that feel the same way.” Since that very moment, Alpha Zeta has been in the works. Arledge first brought up the idea to Laurie Sain, Fanning’s head resident, then began working with Dean of Student Life Sam Smith and Sewell head resident Sam Parnell during the drafting of the constitution. The founding members presented the club’s overview to the head of Greek Life and it was approved for charter. Although forming the...

The Lipscomb community is mourning after chemistry professor Dr. Ben Hutchinson passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 30. Hutchinson was the former dean of the College of Natural & Applied Sciences until 2009, when it was merged with the College of Arts & Sciences. Hutchinson is noted for some of Lipscomb’s most innovative science programs for K-12 students, such as the BEST program and CSI Academy. He also established a science course for Lipscomb’s non-science majors that combines service learning and hands-on experience. Hutchinson has been at Lipscomb since 2004, along with his wife, Nancy Hutchinson, former adjunct professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism. Hutchinson is survived by his wife Nancy, his daughter Amy and son-in-law Steven McBride and three grandchildren, Bennett, Elizabeth and John Carter. Happy New Year, Lumination readers! Now that the new year’s resolutions have been made and the first day of 2015 is here, we want to take a hop back in time to look at some of Lipscomb’s biggest moments of 2014. Before we get to the top 10 stories, we want to take a moment to honor those we lost in 2014. Alumni Andrew Nash, Anastasia Sloan, Meghan Day and Jacob Akers, and associate professor of pharmacy practice Kim Barker and longtime faculty member Earl Dennis all passed away. As we begin a new year, we would like to keep those listed and their families in our thoughts and prayers. Quite a few stories made it close to the top 10. They include a few annual events, special guests and people in new positions of leadership. In December, Amy Grant hosted the tenth annual Lighting of the Green in Allen Arena. This year, a scholarship was created in Grant’s honor. During the spring, the fifth annual Charlie Daniels’ Scholarship for Heroes concert brought country music stars and fundraising to Allen Arena once again. Also in 2014, the Dove Awards returned to Lipscomb for its 46th ceremony. In November, the Lipscomb community came together at one of Nashville’s premier venues: The Ryman. Nashville’s Charles Esten joined the program “Lipscomb: On a New Stage,” and even performed a few tunes, too. Also in 2014, Lipscomb welcomed Darrin Bellows as the new director of security and safety and Josh Roberts as the new dean of student development. In April, Drew Watson was elected as the new SGA president. 10. Dana Carpenter wins national award In October, Dana Carpenter took home...

The Bison baseball team returned home from the Dominican Republic with a stronger sense of appreciation for what they have and formed bonds with one another that they believe will carry on into the season. The team served together on their first all-team mission trip where they renovated a local sandlot field. The guys built dugouts, put up a backstop, leveled the playing surface and spruced up the field. They worked from Dec. 12 to Dec. 19 alongside a pastor named Michel. When the team wasn’t hard at work they had some free time to kill. “When we weren’t working, we spent a lot of time playing with the kids in the local community,” senior Josh Lee said. Senior J Hwang talked about the impact simply spending time with the kids had on him. “The biggest impact for me was the relationship that I got to build with the community and the teammates that I went with,” Hwang said. “I spent a lot of time with the kids, just hanging out hours after hours even though I couldn’t speak Spanish.” Lee said he was most impacted by the lifestyle the people of the community lived, and the joy he saw in their lives. “The biggest impact the trip had on me was how happy and appreciative the people in the community were, especially the kids,” Lee said. “They have very little, but you wouldn’t know that because they never stopped smiling while we were there.” Not only did the trip impact the individual players on the team, but it also helped the team form strong bonds with one another....
