Lipscomb puts on show, showcases future ‘On a New Stage’ at Ryman Auditorium

For one night only, Lipscomb stood center stage at one of the nation’s premiere venues for the “Lipscomb: On a New Stage” program. “Lipscomb: On a New Stage” brought hundreds from the Lipscomb community together Thursday night to the historic Ryman Auditorium to enjoy a night of tunes, tributes and takes on the school’s past, present and future. University president Randy Lowry gave the evening’s keynote address. He shared a few important moves that will have Lipscomb grow exponentially from now to 2020. To Lowry, holding such an event at the Ryman meant more than the other option. “You know, the alternative to this was a chicken dinner at some restaurant,” Lowry said. “Where we would have sat there for 45 minutes and eaten and had a very, very short program, and as we were thinking about the day, we said, ‘Let’s do something more interesting. How about the Ryman? How about coming down here and celebrating? How about being a community in a different place to think about a different future?’” Lowry touched on a variety of advancements for the university in his address, including the addition of the new McFarland lab, new residential space, the new Civil Engineering building, the new Performing Arts Center, a new College of Education building, the new School of Public Policy and Civic Leadership, the school’s new Mobile Medical Units (deploying in 2015) and other updates. For Lipscomb Academy, a new middle school, the new McCadams field house at the Reece Smith Athletic Complex and the possibility for LA students to earn a year’s worth of college credits while still in high...

Completion of Au Bon Pain put on hold

The completion of Au Bon Pain has been put on hold while measures required by the Metro Codes Department are put into place. Director of Campus Plant and Retail Operations Jeff Wilson said that the original goal was to complete construction by mid-semester this fall. “We’ve hit delays there [the future location of Au Bon Pain] because of getting plans through metro codes and so we’re still anticipating an early spring opening, hopefully by mid-January,” Wilson said. The delays may have put construction behind, but they have not been a major interruption to the SAC. “There’s been a little more dust and debris than we would like in the ideal situation, but we feel like overall, the SAC is able to run just fine.” In the meantime, plans are being made for Common Grounds, located on the third floor of Ezell. “We’re still trying to figure out what exactly we will be doing with common grounds, but it looks like we will simple close that and move that business and those items to the Au Bon Pain store there in the SAC.” Au Bon Pain will provide coffee, sandwiches and pastries, much like Common Grounds and ZeBi Bistro do, but the menu will be more extensive. ZeBi Bistro may be potential competition for the new café, but the location is what will make the difference. “I think it could compete with ZeBi some, but the really unique thing about where Au Bon Pain is located is that we will not only have the SAC traffic coming in and out of there, but that’s going to be a really key,...

College of Business hosts first annual Professional Men’s Event

Do you want to make a great impression at your next job interview? Have you wondered how to tie a bow tie? Whether students are graduating next month or next semester, upperclassmen need to know how to dress for job interviews or the first day in the office. On Tuesday, Lipscomb’s College of Business will be hosting the first annual Professional Men’s Event. The free event is in collaboration with the Fashion Merchandising Program, Career Development Center, and AWL & Alumni Relations. There will be free food and plenty of advice from a panel of guest speakers pulled from the business professional world. Leanne Smith from Lipscomb’s College of Business talked with us about the event and what we can expect from the first Professional Men’s Event on campus. “We’ve had two Professional Women’s Events. A few men have asked why we were having these events only for the women.” Smith said. “Last year I asked a student team to write a proposal for what a Professional Men’s Event should look like. They envisioned an event with a heavy networking component, and they suggested some fashion instruction instead.” When it is time to embark into the real world, Smith says dressing to impress is important. “While clothes and grooming alone don’t make you credible, they can help you make a strong first impression.” Smith said. “For young people, this is especially important. If you want to be taken seriously, and if you want to distinguish yourself among a throng of job applicants, you need to polish your social skills along with your shoes.” Ms. Smith says that the College...

Students provided chance to see scorching Predators at discount price

The Nashville Predators lead the Central Division, and Lipscomb students are getting a chance to see the action at a discounted price. The Predators bring several new faces to the ice including Peter Laviolette, the new head coach. The changes provide a whole new style of play to the organization. Nashville was the only team left standing without a loss in regulation when they finally lost to Pittsburgh eight games into the season. First year Predator James Neal tallied the first hat trick on home ice for Nashville since New Year’s Day in 2012 against the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 23. Lipscomb and the Predators organization have teamed up to let students in on the action on a college budget. Every Thursday night in Smashville is Student Rush Night. Lipscomb students and even faculty can purchase tickets for $15 in the upper bowl and $35 in the lower bowl. “My friends and I get tired of doing the same ole go out to dinner and see a movie thing,” sophomore Sarah Warren said. “The discounted Predators tickets make it affordable for us to do something different while getting to enjoy hockey and the awesome atmosphere in Smashville.” The games included on the discount include: • Thursday, Nov. 27 vs. Edmonton Oilers • Thursday, Dec. 4 vs. division rivals St. Louis Blues • Thursday, Jan. 8 vs. division rivals Dallas Stars • Thursday, Feb. 5 vs. Anaheim Ducks • Thursday, Feb. 12 vs. division rivals Winnipeg Jets • Thursday, Feb. 26 vs. division rivals Minnesota Wild • Thursday, March 5 vs. New York Islanders • Thursday, April 8 vs. division...

Power Rangers come out on top in ‘Jolly Dodger’ dodgeball tournament

The Power Rangers rarely, if ever, have been defeated by their opposition, and Friday night was no different…kind of. In the annual Lipscomb dodgeball tournament (this year’s theme being the pirate-influenced “Jolly Dodger”), Team “Power Rangers” defeated “Lipscomb Volleyball” in an epic championship held in the Fanning Hall courtyard Friday night. Senior Ben Ashley explained what was going through his head during the final one-on-one showdown. “Honestly, I was just thinking, ‘This is the end, this is it. But after it’s all over, I’m still going to have a blast because we’re all friends’,” Ashley said. Part of the show included the teams’ theme and costumes. Sophomore Cedric Duncan explains how they came up with the idea for Power Rangers. “We had several ideas at first,” Duncan said. “Husband Housewives was the original one, but decided to go with the Power Rangers.” Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR. En route to their championship, they beat the defending champions, “Team Belmont.” “Everybody wanted us to beat them, so it felt  great to come out on top,” Duncan added. However, the fun didn’t stop there. Since it was Halloween, students had the chance to win $100 for the best costume. Via crowd vote, the winner was a student dressed as Batman. While the competition was fierce, many teams like the Power Rangers were in the tournament to have fun and entertain the crowd. “We had a plan up until the second round, but we weren’t thinking in terms of championship,” Ashley said. “We just wanted to put on a good show.” Carousel photo and gallery credit: Erin...
